Take Care of the Big Rocks First

A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him.  When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, rocks about 2" in diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was.  So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous - yes.

The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and proceeded to pour their entire contents into the jar - effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things - your family, your partner, your health, and your children ... Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter, like your job, your house, and your car.  The sand is everything else. The small stuff."

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.

"Take care of the rocks first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented.

The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers."

* ~ * ~ * ~ *

I found this little article when I was in school last year, and it made a lot of sense.  I'm not a beer drinker, but I do enjoy a nice glass of wine from time to time.  The point is ... Well, maybe YOU should tell me how YOU read it???

What say you?

New Year and other misadventures
Well it's officially a new year. Not that I'm going to be out partying or anything. But still...at least I get to use my shiny new day planner now.

I have a thing for planners. I'm not sure why. My best guess is that it gives me a feeling of control in my life. I feel like Mel Gibson's character from Conspiracy Theory. Every time I pass the day planner section I have to stop, look, and feel. Ok so that makes me slightly neurotic but I figure its better than having to touch every parking meter like Monk. And just so you know my dishes aren't all stacked neatly and squared to the corners or anything either. Really.

I have nothing to say. I am here desperately trying to not break my resolution of last night. I don't want to hurt anymore. I've been thru so much hurt in my life and I want...no I NEED it to stop. I need it to end. I have tried positive thinking. I have tried meditating. Though in perfect fairness I couldn't stop thinking about cookies or food. So that one probably doesn't count.

Heck I even went to church with a friend a few weeks back. That kind of bombshelled as it was a RC church and she took me to her confirmation class [for adults]. Well being a pastor's daughter I couldn't keep my mouth shut when they asked questions and I had the lead nun confused by the end of the class. That was funny at least. But then 2 days ago, HE found out from baby girl that we'd gone and she'd played in nursery. Well that made him flip his wig. 4 years I have abided by his stricture against church. I didn't really want to go for me, but i think it would do Baby Girl a lot of good. And yet, I've not done so at his behest. Then ONE time. One time and I am some sort of brainwashing back stabber. Of course he later decided it was ok since she didn't get religious instruction and then magnanimously offered to go to church once a month with me. Like that was supposed to heal all wounds.

I'm dwelling. I know it. I can't seem to stop it. It's hard to hide from yourself when you are all alone in a stranger's house. I don't know his boss or his boss's wife very well. They don't seem to care to know me. So I seclude myself in the guest room and try to keep little one occupied. I mean I can't go anywhere or do anything. I don't understand the universe right now. I do what I can to do the right thing. I try to be a good mom. I have done my best by him. And yet it seems like the universe is out to get me. I keep telling myself karma is a bitch and maybe I'll have the last laugh. But right now even that doesn't truly console me.

My favorite quote
If you suffer your people to be ill-educated, and their manners corrupted from infancy, and then punish them for those crimes to which their first education disposed them, what else is to be concluded, sire, but that you first make thieves and then punish them?

A Variety of Recipes for FeatherDawn and others

Okay featherdawn asked for a few crockpot recipes that my sister gave me so here they are.  Others are more than welcome to use them also!  I have also included a few none crock pot recipes that my family uses a lot and are easy to make or holiday related!  Okay this got rather long.  Next post has the two crock pot recipes and the other none crockpot dinner recipe:D

Aunt Imogene's Egg Nog

1 (3 1/2 oz) pkg vanilla instant pudding

1/2 tsp. nutmeg

6 cups of milk

Mix together and blend well chill and serve.  It's thick like egg nog from the dairy but with out the raw egg taste.  And what is usually made in my mom's rather large family for the kids that like egg nog!  Randy loves it and he is a HUGE egg nog lover and asks me to make it on a bi weekly baises starting at Thanksgiving!  Feel free to diabetic this recipe up we do!

Aunt Imogene's Ice Cream

must have an ice cream maker!:D

7 or 8 eggs, beaten slightly

Add three cups sugar, beat throughly

Add 1 pint whipping cream

3 pints half and half

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp salt

If necessar add milk to freezer line!  This is only if you have a machine that has a freezer line.  Which my mother and I do!  I have both that kind of ice cream machine and my granny's old crank one!  Can you tell my mom's family loves the rich foods!  Feel free to diabetic this recipe up we do now!  This is a great keep the kids out of your hair project!  Place them with the ice cream machine (if a crank style) in front of the tv and tell them to take turns cranking!  If your like my sister and have an electric machine then your crap out of luck to keep the kids busy!:D

Stuffed French Toast

not sure where i got this recipe from but the kids love it and help make it

8 slices of bread

1/4 c cream cheese

1/4 c fruit spread of choice

2 eggs

2 tbsp milk

1/2 tsp vanilla

Mix eggs, milk, and vanilla together in seperate bowl.

Spread cream cheese on 4 slices of bread.  Spread furit sprad on other 4 slices.  Place slices together and then dip in your egg, milk, vanilla batter.  Cook like French Toast

Coca Mix

my granny, my mom, sister, aunties, cousins, and I make this every fall and winter-great if your big coca drinkers!  Make sure you have a large container with a lid to store it with instructions on how much goes into each cup when your done!

1 8 quart pkg dry milk powerder

1 16 oz sifted poweder sugar

1 3/4 cup unsweetened coca powder

1 6oz powdered creamer

In large bowl combine milk, sugar, cocoa, and creamer,  Mix thourghly!  Also add more coca powder and sugar to your taste if needed!  Store in sealable conainer.  Tblsp or to mixed with hotwater.  To taste.  Great to add marshmellows and whipped cream!  So easy that the kids can get a cup by themselves with hot tapwater!

Eggless, Milkless Chocolate Cake

Again not sure how this made it into the family recipes but this is the mostest chocolate cake we have ever tasted!  And such an easy cake to make too boot!  Great for parents and single folks!  My brother started teaching me to bake with this cake as soon as our granny and mom taught him how to make it!  Also this cake is great to bake up, put in a container sliced or whole and shipped over seas to your Military folks!  It won't go bad!  And the last time we sent it last year to my brother over in Iraq it was still very moist and always has been all 6 times that we knew he was over there!

2 1/4 cup Flour

1 2/3 cup sugar

2/3 cup cocoa

3/4 cup shortening (feel free to substitue butter, oil, or margirine-we do!)

1 1/4 cup hot water

1/1/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp baking powder

1 tsp vanilla

Mix flour, sugar, shortening, salt, baking powder & vanilla together

Mix cocoa and hot water together, in seperate bowl.

Combine the cocoa mix to the powder mix thourghly and then bake at 375 degree.  Checking after about 15 minutes to 20 minutes if done.  I won't put exact time because it all really depends on your oven!  Just stick a toothpick in the middle and if it comes up clean it's done if it doesn't then leave it in and check at 5 to 10 minute intervals till done!
