Fifties Actresses and Models, thin or curvy

I would say that in the 1950's actresses would be, in general, categorized curvy. The bust and hips, I would say, were in general, a bit larger than present day actresses. Although the Bust and hips size were mostly larger in the 1950's; it was the waist size that was most important to be small. Waists were cinched in by belts, and even clothing was designed to be tight around the waist area. 1950's: The WAIST size and BUST size was advertised and most important....not Weight. For instance, magazine stories would print the statistics of actresses..Bust size, waist size, hip size. Perfect was for the bust and hips to be about the same size and the waist size to be as small as possible; yet usually not even a mention of weight. IN THE EARLY 1950's there was Marilyn Monroe who was heavier; but some stars like Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn weighed less. IN THE LATE 1950's, there was Sandra Dee whose weight was more, rather than less. However she too had a larger bust and small waist. [NOTE: In the 1960's she became thin and concerned with weight.] To sum up, I would say that presently it is WEIGHT(low weight) that seems to be important for present day actresses.(good news is this present day low weight trend might be changing to a bit more rounded) In the 1950's, I would say an actresses figure was judged by the Bust size(bigger better) and Waist size(smaller better) , and not necessarily on weight.

And Now.... A little something about current fashion

German fashion industry seeks to ban anorexic catwalk models

German fashion industry representatives signed a voluntary code of conduct in Berlin Friday aimed at banning anorexic models from the catwalk, an initiative backed by the federal government. In terms of the agreement, women models must be older than 16 and have a dress size of at least 36, equivalent to a size 10 in Britain and a size 6 in the United States.

The prime mover behind the initiative, Health Minister Ulla Schmidt, acknowledged that the move would not solve the problem of compulsive slimming among young women.

But an example could be set, in cooperation with other European countries, for the large fashion shows with their extremely thin models, she said.

In December last year, Schmidt, in cooperation with Family Minister Ursula von der Leyen, Education Minister Annette Schavan and Austrian Family Minister Andrea Kdolsky, kicked off a campaign entitled "Life has weight - together against slimming madness."

A recent comprehensive survey by Germany's Robert Koch Institute found that around 22 per cent of youngsters aged 11 to 17 suffer from some form of eating disorder.

In boys, the rate then falls off, while among girls it rises to 30 per cent at the age of 17. Schmidt called the numbers "shocking."

Von der Leyen said 90 per cent of those affected were girls or young women. "Anorexia is overwhelmingly female and it is very youthful," she said.

A letter to Clinton
Mr. Portis surely does not understand the statement "to whom much is given much is required" to see him and Chris Samuels yuck it up on behalf of Mike Vick was sad. Yes Mr.Portis is still young ( I have a son his age)but its seems his grip on reality and morality is very off base, a crime is a crime even if its "behind closed doors"! Perhaps this will serve as a wake up call in some form but for some reason I doubt it. Until now I had a respect for Mr. Portis as he played with a close friend's son at Miami. I hope there is some damage control being implemented as this is another Black eye on our community as apparently we don't need people like Don Imus to insult us we can do a rather good job ourselves. Incidents such as this is why I have never looked up to pro athletes but rather admired men like my father who was the first African American sales rep in the liquor industry in the state of Pennsylvania. Mr. Portis is in my prayer's.
