Those Crazy Cuckoo Martians!
Mars smiley face 2.jpg hosted for free by ImageShack

Oh, those crazy, fun-loving Martians!  First, they buzz around our planet at hyper-speeds, only giving us the opportunity to take fuzzy pictures to ponder.  Now, here they are mocking us, or joking with us—which, I’m not sure.

Perhaps they’re making a comment on the American electoral process.

I don’t know though.  This must have been created by one of their kids, working at getting the human face right.  Either that or the artist had been hitting the Red Planet Pinot Noir when he/she/it decided to express him/her/itself artistically.

The picture was taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

My new crush...
I love geeks. They just turn me on. My new crush is someone I don't know and will never meet...which is unusual for me. His name is Wayne Lee and he is the Chief Engineer on the EDL project for NASA. You too can find information on Wayne and the EDL project by googling his name with NASA or by going to PBS's site and searching for EDL.

Maybe he'll be your new crush too.

Mars Attacks...and Giuliani shits gold
Having survived 9/11, Giuliani is now prepared for anything. And under his leadership the US will be "prepared for anything." One assumes this refers to the preparedness shown under his Mayoral Leadership as a good example. Perhaps the firefighters' radios and the inept way those were contracted out is what we can expect? Or maybe he refers to the way FEMA handled Katrina? Or better yet the way that 9/11 was handled by the Administration and turned into a daft war?

I can only assume that another world attacking Earth would be easier than these scenarios.

Giuliani fielded an interest questioning Sunday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani often stresses his ability to protect America from terrorist threats, but what about from enemies beyond this planet?

Campaigning in Exeter, New Hampshire Sunday, the New York Republican was asked by a young questioner what he would do if aliens attacked the United States, according to the Associated Press.

"Of all the things that can happen in this world, we'll be prepared for that. Yes we will," Giuliani said, noting that he had never fielded a question about potential attacks from outer space before.

"We'll be prepared for anything that happens," he added.

Giuliani spent most of Sunday campaigning in the Granite State, the same day a new poll indicated he narrowly trails rival Mitt Romney there.

Mars/Moon CORRECTION

I recently posted that Mars and the Moon would be close enough together to be seen as if it were going to look like two moons. It has since come to my attention that it is NOT TRUE! My apologies for inadvertantly being a part of this misinformation.

Planetary News: Mars (2007) Not This August, or Any August! Mars Will Not Be as Big as the Full Moon

By Bruce Betts
August 14, 2007 In what seems like an August tradition, e-mails and web postings circulating around the Internet say that Mars will be brighter than it has been in thousands of years, and that it will look as big as the full Moon. Neither of these statements is true, although Mars will be very bright and easy to observe during the fall and winter of this year. The origin of the rumor is presumably linked to the fact that Mars was indeed closer to Earth than it had been in tens of thousands of years -- in August 2003. But even during that close approach, Mars appeared as a point of light in the sky.

While I do want to fight misinformation -- I still want to remind you to look up! We shouldn't need an excuse like "closest approach for 60,000 years" to look up and see the planets. Right now, Mars rises in the middle of the night in the east, but it will become visible in the evening sky and will get much brighter as we approach opposition at the end of the year.  And, Jupiter is the brightest star-like object in the evening sky.

Here is more information about Mars viewing in 2007:

- In 2007, Mars will be closest to Earth on December 18.

- Mars never appears large enough to be more than a point of light to the naked eye, and certainly not coming anywhere near the apparent size of the Moon in our sky!

- In 2007, Mars will be significantly farther than it was in 2003, but closer than it will be at its next opposition in 2010. In December 2007, it will still be nice to see as it will be about as bright as the brightest star in the sky, but not nearly as bright as Jupiter or Venus.

- Because of the combination of Earth's and Mars' orbital periods, Mars and Earth grow closer every 26 months. Even then, they are still many tens of millions of kilometers away from each other.

- Martian close approaches vary a lot in brightness because Mars' orbit is much more elliptical (less circular) than Earth's. So, sometimes we are "close" to it when it is in the part of its orbit that is nearest the Sun, and sometimes when it is farthest in its orbit from the Sun.

- Mars was indeed closer to Earth in the 2003 close approach than it had been in tens of thousands of years, but not by much compared with approaches that happened tens of years ago.

- Mars will be about 16 arcseconds across during the 2007 close approach, which is about 9 arcseconds smaller than in 2003. But, the disk will be clear in almost any small telescope. A nice amateur telescope should allow you to see at least a polar cap and some light and dark markings on the surface

Rare celestial occurence
TWO MOONS ON AUG 27
The night of August 26th--Maximize at 12:30 AM on August
27th...............
Planet Mars is coming closer to the earth and will be the brightest planet in our night sky starting in August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. It will maximize on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again
