Making Marriage Work @ MindSay

Apologies

It seems to me that I have a problem with making bad situations out of nothing or making things worse than they ought to be.  I do it all the time, and it is pretty irresponsible now that I am on the verge of marriage and have a child to take care of.  I can’t afford to keep making stupid mistakes; I’m not a student or a kid anymore.  It is getting old.  I’ve created awkward situation after awkward situation regarding this wedding and my side of the guest list.  I was told time and time again to get it straight who I needed to invite, and I did the opposite.  Well, for a day that should be about celebration, the anticipation is littered with potholes.  Lindsay has had to deal with a lot of the crap from this as well, and I apologize to her for that a thousand times.  I need to not rush into things and quit being lazy.  I need to be a better person, plain and simple.  Just getting by does not work anymore; mediocrity is a step away from failure.  I really let myself down sometimes.

message from a jewish wife

I have been married longer than most mindsay bloggers have been alive and maybe that enitles me to say something about what makes a relationship work. I mean beyond the superficial things like one bed - two closets and two sinks.

marry  a friend. friendship lasts longer than lust

communicate honestly but with heart. brutality isn't kind nor required to be authentic

be civil. it gets a lot and costs nothing

when you both feel crappy, see who can manage to be even a teensy bit nicer than the other

never discuss something loaded with low blood sugar

try to process a difference before bedtime

don't keep records or tabs, it's ugly and self defeating

let your partner influence you, stonewalling and inflexibility suck

if these things don't work. Read John Gottman's books. he is quite wise.

.

now with all that out of the way I will tell you that Fences was dreadful, August Wilson is wildly overrated and he will go the way of clifford odets or John Dos Passos. he isn't oneil, williams or arthur miller. or stoppard or shephard. there I said it.

today we released some fish into the pond, lets hope the mammal wild life doesn't fish.

jim is making dinner tonight because tomorrow we have guests and I will cook. something mediterranean (sp?) I think. oh and and happy belated may day.
