A cidade é assolada por uma sucessão de crimes cometidos pelo Sr. Hyde, que mantém um estranho vínculo com Jekyll. Além de ter acesso irrestrito à sua casa e laboratório, Hyde ainda aterroriza a vida da pobre Ivy Pierson. A proximidade entre duas pessoas tão distintas levanta a suspeita dos amigos do cientista...
Apesar de realizada em 1932, a adaptação de Rouben Mamoulian é extremamente moderna – com uma montagem ágil e efeitos especiais impressionantes. No livro, porém, a figura feminina não existe. A “boa” Muriel e a “má” Ivy (assim como Jekyll e Hyde, a dupla principal) sintetizam a dualidade inerente à própria natureza humana; que é tão bem retratada por Robert Louis Stevenson. Vários críticos afirmam que, mesmo com inúmeras refilmagens, esta é a melhor versão de todas.

As diferenças radicais entre o filme de James Whale e o romance de Mary Shelley não diminuem o charme da versão cinematográfica. A obra de 1931 serviu de referência a muito do que Hollywood produziu posteriormente. E a magnífica interpretação de Boris Karloff como a criatura – um dos grandes atores do gênero de horror, ao lado de figuras como Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price e Christopher Lee – é um dos grandes atrativos dessa adaptação.
A história começa com o cientista Henry Frankenstein e seu ajudante Fritz coletando pedaços de corpos de cadáveres em um cemitério. Montando um quebra-cabeça macabro, Henry pretende dar vida a um ser inanimado. Porém, ele nem desconfia que o cérebro implantado no monstro pertencia a um criminoso... Dr. Waldman (seu antigo tutor), Victor (seu melhor amigo) e Elizabeth (sua noiva) tentam dissuadi-lo da idéia.
A troca de nomes dos personagens centrais – no livro, o cientista chama-se Victor e o ajudante, Igor – não é a principal mudança em relação ao texto original. A criatura de James Whale é animalesca, incapaz de se expressar. Com um raio, numa noite de tempestade, Henry consegue animar o inanimado. Assim que a mão de Karloff se move, o cientista anuncia às incrédulas testemunhas: “It’s alive, it’s alive” (Está vivo, está vivo). Mas quando as coisas começam a dar errado, Henry – que se julgava Deus – recorre ao Todo-poderoso e à sua misericórdia; o que nos leva a inevitável pergunta: afinal de contas, o verdadeiro monstro é a criatura ou o criador?
No imaginário popular, Frankenstein é a criatura – e não seu criador. Stephen King diz que a popularização da figura do monstro se deve, em grande parte, ao cinema. Ele sustenta que o livro da escritora inglesa não é tão famoso quanto as incontáveis adaptações para as telas. Opiniões à parte, ambas as obras merecem ser conhecidas.
