A friend of mine in high school lent me Metallica's "The Black Album" and "Master of Puppets" in an effort to convert me to a fan. It worked, but how could it not? Those two albums are what I like to call genre-busters. Even though they were metal albums, they appeal to people that don't typically like metal; people that like other genres of music. "The Black Album" was an instant genre-buster and "Master of Puppets" has proven to be one over time. I picked up the other 3 albums that Metallica had out and while I didn't like them as much, I was powerless to the assault and became a huge fan.
In 1996 Metallica released it's next album, "Load", followed in the new few years by "ReLoad", "S&M", and "Garage, Inc." These albums were different. Long-time fans accussed Metallica of selling out to the very popular alternative sound. New fans rebutted by saying this was just an evolution of metal, but it was still metal. I was in this "new fan camp" and was trying to hold true to my supposed metal roots.
In hind-sight (always 20-20), I think the long-term fans were correct. These were alternative-fueled albums. I could easily listen to them along with Nirvana and Tori Amos because they were more similar than I was willing to admit. A few years ago, Metallica released "St. Anger", a speed-metal onslaught that was the band's way of showing they were still the kings of metal. The original 1980s fans loved it, while the 90s fans just didn't take to it.
In the past few weeks I've relistened to "St. Anger" and some of the other more metal sounding Metallica albums. I just can't get into them. I find myself skipping songs to just get to the end of the disc. I'm fine with "The Black Album" and "Master of Puppets", but I only can really listen to about half of "Ride the Ligthning" and "Kill 'Em All". Yesterday I started listening to "Load" and "ReLoad" and fell in love all over again. This is the Metallica I like.
I love mid to late 90s Metallica even more than those genre-busters. I love the musical risks they were taking within the genre of metal. I love that there's a country song. I love that Marianne Faithful just "la la la"s with no real lyrics in one of the songs. I love that one song features an unusual instrument called a hurdy-gurdy, which is best described as a mechanical violin. I love that this metal band restructured all their songs and played them with a symphony orchestra ("S&M"). I love that they replaced the blistering metal solos with more interesting (in my opinion), wah-fueled solos. I love that when they recorded new cover material of the songs that inspired them for the album "Garage, Inc.", they didn't just record them as faithful covers as they did for the original "Garage Days", but instead did their own interpretations of the songs.
I love the Metallica that drove away the long time, hardcore fans; and now 10 years later, I'm finally comfortable admitting it.
If any "real" Metallica fans read this post, I will likely be ostracized from the group. The "real" fans love the real metal albums. The casual fans of "The Black Album" and "Master of Puppets" are ignored because there's just too many of them and those people really aren't causing any problems. But someone who not only likes, but says that "Load" and "ReLoad" are his favorites? Well, that guy deserves to get destroyed by the metal militia!
Hey Guys!
Well. I prolly freaked a few of you out by announcing the happy news.
Ok. This is a super long story...
Yesterday morning I got up at 6:30 a.m. to give courtney a bath before the show. She was fine during the bath. I took her back to her stall, watered her and gave her some hay to munch on before we left.
7:30a.m.
I went inside, showered, got all my stuff around. My dad meanwhile started to try and load her. I get dressed and go outside. She will not load at all.
We try a lot of different ways to load her. None of them work.
So my dad tells my mom to go across the road and get Rob, our much more expirirenced horse neighbor. Courtney is already bleeding because she reared( when they go up on their back feet) with her head still in the trailer.
Rob comes over, and we try another way of loading her. Doesn't worl and she about breaks her neck because when she reared again, she fell down. So we decide to try rob's trailer, which is an open livestock trailer not a horse trailer. We get his trailer, and she pretty much hops right in. We spent over ran hour trying to load the stupid horse. And the show starts at 9 a.m.
Dad says go inside and put on your show outfit. I quickly do so, and then we leave and head to the fairgrounds. When I get there, they are only on class one, so I registered, and go to the trailer, finish cleaning the horse up because she is still bleeding.
My first class was open halter. We did ok for the most part. But we didn't place. Oh well no biggie.
Besides Courtney is prancing around, and not listening.
Turns out she is in heat.
Oh shit! When mares are in heat they are either ok, or they are nutcases. Courtney was being a nutcase.
So, we didn't place in my second class either. Not a big deal though.
well after that, we lunge her for over an hour. My dad lunged her, jeff(dad's horse expirienced Friend), and I lunged her. After that, she settled down a little, but she is still really ancy.
I decide to saddle her up, and ride her before the next class.
I am getting on her, and my dad had a hold of the reins.
I get my leg up over the horse, and she starts to pull back away from my dad. Well since She backs up so fast, her back feet slide out from under her, and she goes over on her back. With me under her.
Thankfully I fell to the side!
Or otherwise, I prolly would have been in the hospital.
All I remember when she started going back was screaming DAD! at the top of my lungs, and seeing her come up. And then I hit the ground, and I was trying to crawl away from the horse and rip the rein that was on my shoulder off, and then my dad comes up and drags me away from the horse.
I get up, and I was shaking like you wouldn't believe. I fell on my head and shoulder on my right side, so I'm super sore today.
Thankfully, that's why I ALWAYS wear a helmet when I ride.
So Jeff gets on courtney and he rides for a while, and I get back on and ride. She is still a little jumpy. We finally just decide that we are just gonna scratch the next two classes that I have and leave.
so We go home, unload everything, do chores and it's about 2 or 3 p.m. We then sit in the house for a little while deciding what we should do about Courtney being in heat. my mom talks about breeding her to a jack( boy donkey) so we could have a mule!
My dad was like" that's a good idea, but do we know any one with a jack?"
Then he was like oh wait, Mike Cavanagh has a jack that we could breed her to!
So we call mike up, and he was like yeah we have a jack that you could breed her to. I won't charge you anything either, but he is a little slow, if you know what i mean.
So we load up the horse, and drive for about an hour. We get there and nothing happns, so he was just like, well you can just take him home with you for a couple of weeks.
So... We call jeff and ask if we could keep courtney and the jack in his arena, since we didn't have any place for him to stay at our house.
He said sure, but if that thing gets out and breeds all my mares, I 'm gonna kill you, and then you are gonna buy all the stupid things.
So That's what I mean by having a baby.
Courtney's gonna have a cute little baby. In about a year, if she gets bred now. a horse's gestation period is like 11 months and so many days.
YAY!! I"M SO EXCITED!!
Wow, that was a lot to type!
Ciao,
Mariah
