Little Miss Sunshine @ MindSay
i saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Little Miss Sunshine last night at their house. Eternal was kind of like, okay what the heck but it was good. Little Miss was super great though. Dwayne was only SO cool. i want to see Vanity Fair sometime. it seems really good.
have a great monday
next entry: my thoughts on the movie "an inconvient truth"-->might be a video blog
Some initial reactions:
Yay for Little Miss Sunshine and it's several nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. That movie is incredible.
Yay for Borat, for Best Adapted Screenplay. Is that what they call it when much of the movie is improvised, or are they considering it as adapted from The Ali G Show?
Maybe more reactions later... or maybe not.
It keeps raining these days .And it is getting cold and cold.
The leaves turn yellow and red in the late autumn ,what a beautiful scenery.
Though the misty avenues look beauteous in the rain, the rain makes me feel gloomy.
So a gloomy Sunday!
I miss the sunshine ,the warm sunshine.
Wish I could see you tomorrow.
I'll have to finish updating when I get back....
Eric Rohmer:
4 aventures de Reinette et Mirabelle (1987) AKA 4 Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle This is probably my least favorite Eric Rohmer film. I wanted to turn it off so badly, yet subjected myself to it. There is one part where I started hysterically laughing because it was so bad. Reinette and Mirabelle, both girls, start dancing. Not in a Napoleon Dynamite way. Like a really lame sort of way. I think they were in their nightgowns. I was like, give me a break.
Anglaise et le duc, L' (2001) AKA The Lady and the Duke This was a pretty decent movie. Lucy Russell was in this. She was also in Christopher Nolan’s The Following.
Conte d'automne (1998) AKA Autumn Tale This one was lacking a bit too. Usually Eric Rohmer focuses on young people. This one was about setting up a middle-aged widow. It was ok.
Rendez-vous de Paris, Les (1995) The only thing I didn’t like about this movie was that there were 3 stories instead of one. They could have been interconnected or each story could have been developed more. It only left me wanting more. Especially the first story, I felt could have gone on.
David Cronenberg :
I had only seen two David Cronenberg films: Spider and History of Violence. I saw the David Cronenberg section in a film store and had no idea what I was missing out on. So I decided to expand my knowledge.
Dead Ringers (1988) I really liked this one. It explores David Cronenberg’s theme of “brothers.”
eXistenZ (1999) I really liked this, especially the end. Even though I can probably see why it bombed. It was trying to be too sophisticated.
Naked Lunch (1991) This was my least favorite David C. movie. I couldn’t really get into this drug-induced fantasy. I don’t know if the director or just the main character was on drugs. Open to debate I guess.
Scanners (1981) I really liked Scanners, I guess because I like watching things explode? It was pretty cool.
Videodrome (1983) I don’t know if I liked Scanners or Videodrome better. This is kind of like a sci-fi version of Network if you can imagine. I didn’t like all the sadomasochistic stuff, but what are you going to do? Debbie Harry (of Blondie fame) was in this, and was pretty good, even if she was brunette in this.
Brian De Palma:
Dressed to Kill (1980) This one was okay. I was reading about how Andy Warhol was the first one to have a split screen with stuff going on simultaneously. Brian DePalma does exactly that, in this one scene. I was wondering whether to watch one screen and rewind and watch the other, because there was dialog going on at the same time. It’s kind of hard though.
Sisters (1973) This one is probably underrated. It was a good thriller, but I couldn’t tell right away what was going to be wrong. You know that something is going to go terribly wrong if it’s a Brian DePalma film.
Peter Coyote:
Bitter Moon (1992) This Roman Polanski film was recommended to me because the person thought I’d like it. I actually didn’t, but it was okay. Peter Coyote was in it and he was in my favorite French film.
Kika (1993) I saw Peter Coyote’s name in the credits, and his character was supposed to be American, but his Spanish was so convincing, I thought he was a Spanish actor until I finally realized it was Peter Coyote. This Almodovar film was gritty but pretty good.
Other:
Dark August (1976) This one was pretty bad, but I got through it because of people I knew shouting at the screen.
Edmond (2005) This film was racist, violent, and crazy, but it was David Mamet, so what do you expect? Overall, good.
Factotum (2005) I was pleasantly surprised.
The Fallen Idol (1948) Pretty good, saw it as a double feature with … Peeping Tom (1960) a Michael Powell that didn’t fail to stun and shock, even for its time.
Fantôme de la liberté, Le (1974) AKA Phantom of Liberty. A Luis Bunuel film that was truly out there, but that’s good.
Jeux interdits (1952) AKA Forbidden Games. Samara recommended this one to me, but told me I was going to cry. I don’t know if I didn’t believe her, but this one definitely got to me.
Killer's Kiss (1955) I wasn't as impressed with it as I should have been.
King of the Hill (1993) A sad, but delightful movie.
Landru (1963) This was dubbed, but a hard to find Claude Chabrol movie so I suffered through it.
Little Miss Sunshine (2006) Exceptionally great! My favorite movie of the year so far.
Scenes from a Mall (1991) Pretty lame, but it had its moments.
The Short Films of David Lynch (2002) It was so great to see these, especially The cowboy and the Frenchman which had a Frenchman who had all the cliche French things about him. I nearly died laughing.
Temps qui changent, Les (2004) AKA Changing Times It was good, but it droned on a little.
Touchez pas au grisbi (1954) One of Jeanne Moreau's first movies. Not the best, but an interesting one to view.
Trust the Man (2005) Probably one of the worst movies I've seen in awhile. Jokes that were trying to hard. Besides the exceptional cast, there is nothing going for it.
Vincent & Theo (1990) Only one Robert Altman movie this month? I know, it’s hard to believe. I had meant to see this a lot sooner. It was okay.
Where the Truth Lies (2005) I was let down by Where the Truth Lies. Usually the director does his own thing and is not concerned with commercialism. This movie was spoon feeding the audience and was definitely not what I was expecting.
White Noise (2005) Comparable to Cellular, it would be easy to miss this one. It wasn't bad, but then again it wasn't too great.
Turned off:
Carnages (2002)
Dr. M (1990)
Least favorite out of the ones I didn’t turn off: Trust the Man, Adventures of Reinette & Maribelle, and Landru
Very favorites: Jeux Interdits AKA Forbidden Games, and Little Miss Sunshine
34 Total – Yes, I’m lame for watching so many movies.
