Scanning the headlines on Yahoo! today brought me to an interesting article. It was about the hottest tourist destinations of 2008. This is the kind of thing I normally enjoy reading because it gives me ideas and helps me dream of the day I can head off on a dream vacation. However, this is quite possibly the most absurd list I have seen in my life.
The article could have been called "5 places no one will ever go". Okay that's not really fair, people do go to New Orleans (#5) but putting it on the list primarily because Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie live there seems a trifle appalling (for lack of a better word).
Shall we discuss #1? Bhutan? A place I had to look up just to know where it is? Why would anyone want to travel to a place that charges people $200 just to enter the country? And what on earth does Bhutan have that you can't get from any other scenic place in the world? Want a majestic view...go visit the Grand Canyon, it's free. But hey, everybody's happy there so maybe we should go, just to see what they're on.
Which brings us to the absurdly ridiculous choice of Greenland for #2. Quick, anyone name a city in Greenland. It is a huge place...any city will do. Stumped? Yeah, the rest of the world too. Touring igloos doesn't sound like a vacation to me. But then, I am from Minnesota that kind of thing seems mundane here.
I won't go in detail on the rest (although #3 wasn't the worst pick in the world, it certainly wasn't the best either). Check out the article and read the sniveling, pathetic remarks by the author. Really, the choices are lame enough, but the reasons truly give the article its tarnish.
