so much for mowing the lawn
so, thursday was rather uneventful as usual, other than working out a few further details regarding the funeral (i won't need to play any sort of reception-type music, just the accompaniment—a slight relief), and figuring out where the marine corps chapel is in quantico and how to get there. that aside, carolyn tells me the little potluck dinner for the chinese exchange students was at 6PM and that i was invited to join in, so i dawdled a bit and packed some things before heading down to richmond (after asking josephine to pick up a pie for me at walmart, which she actually didn't do until i was basically already at the house). managed to make it downtown in record time, and gave carolyn a call; thankfully they were just starting, so i join in as the random friend who also happens to be chinese.
it's pretty overwhelming being around that many of your people at one time, though thankfully another first generation, jenny, was also an "intern" with carolyn, along with sean, tabitha (?), and more leader-y theresa and j—annd i just forgot her name. i translated a bit, noting that tomatoes and eggs was the only traditional chinese dish, though the others I sampled (carolyn's pasta salad, tabitha (?)'s soy sauce-flavored pulled chicken, jenny's mac & cheese, etc.) were pretty good, as well. my arriving somewhat late meant i got my food after everyone else, though, standing around chatting with the staff about the program, and explaining that i didn't go to vcu and just was basically visiting carolyn.
as dinner finished up, theresa left with most of the group to play a "card game" she called "killers" (something i didn't have a good translation for), which carolyn was so kind to explain to me as mafia (which i have played before—once, on the bus ride back from wake or duke), meaning the cards were really just to determine roles. as we cleaned up and joined the group, theresa explained the rules to us stragglers, and that it was good for learning their american names (let's see if i can remember, clockwise from my left: howard, joey, [mafia], eric, serenity, [leader person], [mafia], [], [really quiet girl], sean, [], [], scoffield, [mafia], [mafia], [james?], david, jenny, tabitha (?), theresa, carolyn). i watched the first round, sitting at a table behind carolyn, amused as the "judge" added a bit of story, like i had when i played on the band trip, though with less ridiculousness.
some of the rules were a bit different though, like those killed by mafia in the night could leave a dying message (a la if they were "police" (q) and had correctly guessed a killer (k), they could say so, but there were no chances to be saved by a medic)..of course, this was a bit complicated because on death or occasionally whenever a police person felt like it, they would reveal their roles, and we also knew how many of each role there were. sean hadn't been paying much attention to how to actually play, so i took his spot among my people for a third and final round to confused looks, while a few people left to retire to their dorms. the girl next to me noticed that we both had on green shirts and were next to another girl and scoffield who had on purple shirts, so she had someone across the circle take a picture of us (i should've peace signed like she did!).
what then ensued was an attempt by me and eric (the poh-leece) to find out three killers..but carolyn was deaded first. as we and the civilians managed to kill two of them (i thought it was over then), eric was killed, leaving me to convince the rest of the group without revealing my identity. slowly i watched my fellow townspeople be killed, as i incorrectly guessed each and every person until the last possible combination, where there was me, one civilian (joey?), and the killer (zoe). thankfully, on our final civilian vote i managed to convince him that it was indeed zoe, from my final correct guess, and we won! as we were headed back, eric introduced himself and carolyn insisted we speak in chinese, so we chat for a bit, him commending me for not letting him have died in vain, even if i'd won at the last possible moment.

MY BROTHER'S RANCH
Mi hermano, el medico,
Elemental sencillo,

MY BROTHER'S RANCH
My brother the doctor
Elemental and simple,
He bought in Coconucos a ranch of illusions
Standing on some guaduas,
It is white as chalk
While the morning light
Comes through its door and windows
It's Looked after by a magestic hill,
Left standing when the immense mountains
Ran away from the deluge and the hand of God
My brother's ranch
Elemental and simple like his heart
Is full of corners and flowers
Tanned by the sun and age
Rich and full of enchantment

I've been blogged!
So, I was doing an ego search (i.e., Googling "tomensnaben"), and found that I am actually mentioned somewhere by someone else! Here, to be exact. Well, I suppose it's more so my Latin, but still, if I can be cited as an authority on something, even something so minor that contributing at all makes you an authority, I'm happy.
This calls for a celebration! Any ideas?
