Did you know that Kiwi birds have poor eyesight?  I thought since they are nocturnal birds they would have really good night vision. But I learned through some online research that it is not at all true.

The Kiwi bird is a native of New Zealand and endemic to that island nation. That means it does not live anywhere else in the world, except in zoos.   I first wrote about it at my bird blog and the interest from my readers has motivated me to look further into these cute little characters.

Their sense of smell is heightened. Cool. These flightless birds with almost NO wings have nostrils at the END of their bill and use their super olfactory sense to find food in the leaf litter and soil.  According to the SanDiego Zoo, where I observed them in a special nocturnal exhibit, when Kiwi Birds are frightened they hide. That is to be expected, but they often hide in burrows, like their nests and stick out their bills to sniff the air nearby to decide if the coast is clear and it is safe to come out.

These special birds are full of surprises.

If you're a fan of Funeral for a Friend, I urge you to pick up Tales Don't Tell Themselves. Mena got it delivered through the post yesterday, and it's fucking awesome. About 200% better than Hours, and should be a dead cert for #1 this time next week.

If you're a fan of Linkin Park, avoid Minutes to Midnight like the plague. Seriously. I'm so glad I downloaded it, because it's just shit, and is now most likely to win my Worst Album of 2007 award, which is saying something when Shitdisco's Kingdom of Fear is on the same list. Kudos to LP for trying something different, but it had to be good as well.

And finally, if you're a fan of Maroon 5, hold out for It Won't Be Soon Before Long. It's brill, 80s rock/pop style. My current favourite is Kiwi, though Makes Me Wonder (lead single) isn't too bad either.

Oh, and Marilyn Manson has finally released a fairly radio-friendly album in Eat Me, Drink Me, if you ever thought that possible. Give that a whirl when it's released. Worth a listen, at least.

hhhmmm, looks like I am talking to myself since I'm the only person working because of the winter storm thing that has a stranglehold on this globally warm area of the world...

The thought that crossed my mind on this winter's day (well I got down on my knees and I pretend to pray. You know the preacher likes the cold. He knows I'm gonna stay. California dreamin' etc.) was believe it or not was the fact that if Klondike bars had a clear shell (flavour is not important for this coating though something like kiwi would be kinda cool in a groovilicious sorta groove thang) they would resemble the world I see outside the window from which I watch the world go by...

I sure can use a great deal of words to say very little...
