Scottish Kilts
For anyone who is interested in Scottish Highland attire, or buying a new kilt, I wholeheartedly recommend this kiltmaker.
I'll forewarn you that he only makes 4 yard box pleated kilts, not the usual 8 yard knife pleated kilts. If you want to know the difference check out my articles on the "Kilt".
and article #2
Anyway, Mr. Newsome recently
completed his 200th kilt! Check it out folks! I'm impressed!

Yours aye,

Stone Mountain Highland Games, Part 1

It was a beautiful crisp, cool day at Stone Mountain park for the 34th annual Stone Mountain Highland Games and Scottish Festival.

Beautiful location on the water (with just a hint of menace in the air...)

According to Scottish tradition, every family clan has their own distinct tartan patterns. This began because the local weavers for each area would favor certain patterns and colors, and eventually these patterns came to represent the main family. Handy for the constantly warring Celts- if you know your tartans, you can tell at a glance if a stranger belongs to a family that is friend or foe. In modern times, businesses sometimes have tartans designed to represent their company.

This appears to be the tartan for Clan UPS Delivery.

At least 100 different Clans and Tribes were represented with their own booths, from McDonalds to Martians.

There is a huge variety in what people wear with their kilts- traditional to hippies to cowboys.

A man is never too young to learn to wear the kilt.

More pictures, stories- maybe even video- in the next day or two.

Old Photo

Here is another old photo of James (
Semiomniscient) in his wee kilt. He is wearing a kilt in the Buchanan Clan Tartan (Old Set) in "weathered colors". The photo was taken at the Burns Supper in 1994 and by this time, Jamie was a skilled Scottish Country Dancer.

Highland dress quote
"The Highland dress is essentially a 'free' dress -- that is to say, a man's taste and circumstances must alone be permitted to decide when and where and how he should wear it... I presume to dictate to no man what he shall eat or drink or wherewithal he shall be clothed." -- Stuart Ruaidri Erskine, The Kilt & How to Wear It, 1901.

Awww Daad! Another old Photo!

Yes! I do have two sons! Here is a photo that was taken in the Summer of 1991 by my father. From left to right, Ian age 3, Tom, (thirty something) and James age 5. Mungalls all! Ian is wearing a kilt in the Royal Stewart Tartan, Tom is wearing the Stirling and Bannockburn District Tartan and Jamie is wearing the MacBeth Tartan. My parents painted a large oil painting portrait from this photo that summer which now hangs in my office.
