One more memorable visit
Recently, i was invited by Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kochi (Cochin), Kerala,  to participate in their national conference on computational science and engineering (NCCSE 09). It was a memorable visit to a memorable institution. I was amazed and impressed by their commitment to socially responsible activities. I visited their waste disposal facility, verimculture facility, bio-gas facility, and ground water conservation facilities. Very thoughtfulof them. I am strongly convinced that big and beautiful buildings do not make a great institution. Thoughtful and responsible people create such institutions. The conference itself was very enlightening. The best part of my visit was to notice the amount of attention they give to hospitality. Right from the moment we stepped out of the train, till we were safely on our way back home, we had student volunteers pampering us.

Thank you Rajagiri for this excellent experience.

A ray of hope in rural India
A ray of hope in rural India

Last week, I was invited by Mar Athanasios College For
Advanced Studies (MACFAST), in Tiruvalla, Kerala. This is an
institution which coaches young minds, in the fields of
computer science (MCA), management (MBA) and several
branches of bio-technology. My visit was short, but it gave
me an idea of how a team of dedicated and active  teachers
can change the lives of so many people. It also gave me a
glimpse of the games played by unscrupulous  politicians,
and how they make it difficult for our country to make any
progress. Yet, MACFAST has achieved some remarkable results.

There was one signal which I did not fail to notice. My talk
to them was on the opportunities the world of FOSS gives us
all. It was, as usual peppered with the inevitable dose of
Microsoft bashing. I think, that the students got the
message. In no time, they switched over from MS based
presentations, to a Fedora based one. They proved that they
could do it. Many of them met me after my talk, and assured
me that they would avoid MS forever. It was so gratifying to
see the change. With students like this, and an institution
like MACFAST, there is hope for India.

Thank you MACFAST. GOD bless you for the fine job you are
doing.

If you happen to visit Kerala, visit MACFAST at Tiruvalla.
Or if you can't do that, at least visit their web site at :

One month later
It is more than a month since I joined IIITMK. How do I feel about it ? The first few days of course went in discovering this lovely sea side city. It was also an experience getting used to a new work place, new colleagues, new culture. Once the euphoria has died down, it is time to take stock and look ahead.

I noticed that in this one month I did not pick up a quarrel with anybody. I did not have to scream at anybody or bang the desk in pent up anger. Which speaks a lot about how I feel here, and about this place itself. This place is not without flaws. But these are flaws which people are sincerely trying to correct. This is such a great contrast to the four years of torture I faced in our JNTU colleges back home. How can one set of people be so methodical and professional, and another set of people be so incompetent and foolish ? How do these JNTU colleges survive and make money, in spite of all the chaos which they create and nurture, and all the dumb people they have recruited ?

I hope this feel-good mood will last for the rest of my stay here. I hope I will never have to show the other face of 'dynamite" Partha to these people. Keep your fingers crossed and taped.

The teacher's progress
It is almost certain now. Partha  will join soon Indian Institute of Information technology and management kerala (IIITMK) at Trivandrum. IIITMK is a small institute filled with great intellectuals. This is in sharp contrast to the private engineering colleges which Partha has seen. All these were big institutes, filled with people with small intellects. At last, the torture is over.

Partha's new address and contact details will be posted in this blog soon.
