This was our street just a few hours after Wilma passed through. Not all neighborhoods were so fortunate as to keep the tops of their trees. This sign bit the Big Burger. I don't know what that thing was, but it blew off the top of a shopping center. WHEW!
Today I could barely get any work done. I kept checking a bunch of websites for the latest news on Wilma, and trying to figure out how close she was going to come to my parents. This morning when we were watching the weather Av said "Look at all those colors!" I was trying to explain to him that all of that green was rain that was heading towards his grandparents.
At work it was a constant round of checking local South Florida webstites, IMs with Shiny, and trying to figure out when to call my folks. Just as I was reloading Herald.com my cell rings - odd since I'm at work, but it's my mom! She was calling to let me know that they were ok.
The power went out around 8am, and there was lots of rain and wind. Then a big crash. According to what they could see through the one small window they didn't shutter up, one of the big ficus trees on the road behind the house fell and landed on the backyard wall. Parts of the tree came through the screens over the pool, and apparently the tree is covering most of the house. Dad said that the tree just about covers the entire length of the house - the tree is that big - he said there doesn't look like there is any damage, but they won't know till after the tree is removed. There is no damage to the inside of the house though - no leaks or anything. Mom said it wasn't as scary as Hurricane Andrew, but certainly not pleasant. When the eye went over them (almost the entire county actually!) they got power back on briefly, but then the back wall of the hurricane hit and it was more powerful than the front one, which took a lot of people by surprise.
When I spoke with them again tonight, they were still in the darnk, and they had removed some downed trees from the street. My dad asked me to log in to his work email for him so that he could get reschedule a meeting and make sure that he didn't have to go in tomorrow. I find the use of modern technology interesting, since Dad asked me to email the family and let them know they were ok.
It was certainly a much more powerful storm than they had all anticipated, and damage looks pretty bad throughout the entire South Florida area. Here's hoping that everyone else weathered the storm as well...
Remember to pray for sandyquill and any other mindsayers in florida right now. I think the hurricane is in the atlantic now and God willing it stays there....
