Hiways @ MindSay

Suicidial Deer and Your Car....

There is a time of year that insurance agents LOVE!  Actually two!:D  Spring and Fall.  Simply because after these two seasons they can go and increase EVERYONE's premiums after the multiple occurances of deer suicide.

Many city folks have a hard time driving along state and county hiways in many states because of the many deer carcuases that sit along the rode side, bloated, distanted, and even desimated.  With the guts and brains spread across the lanes of traffic.  To those of us who live in these areas it is a normal occurance and we take the proper steps in protecting ourselves and our vechiles.  Simply because sucidial deer run in herds.  And they do literally jump in front of your cars and very few move once they see the headlights coming at them.

These suicidal deer can do a lot of damage to a vechile and can even kill a person.  Even if you are in a big truck or a rig.  Simply because if they are bounced up to the hood of the truck or rig, the hoofs and horns can shatter a windshield and puncture a person in the head, chest, or abdomin.  Many of us make jokes about how suicidal deer can be because of how many liter our roadsides.

Just tonight I lost count of the carcuases of deer on a 30 minute drive south to my Pampered Chef party.  I counted over 20 plus and just stopped.  I was very leary driving home tonight even if I did have my hubby's Power Disel Ford F250 1/2 ton pick up w/ full grill gaurd.  My friend lives 5 miles off a hiway on a S curve gravel road with a few hills;  in that five miles I had to keep my speed about 15 miles an hour and tap on the breaks and horn 3 times due to the sucidal deer.  Contrary to popular belief, big trucks can NOT stop on a dime like they claim in those stupid ass comericials!  Once I hit the hiway it was worse and usualy is on bluff roads along rivers.  And when you live in farming country it is ten times worse!  On my half hour drive home from the party I laid on my horn up to 12 times, slammed on the brakes at least 4 times, and came to a complete stop for one herd of sucidial deer.

I figured I would hand out some country girl common sense driving tips for the Spring and Fall due to the herds of suicidal deer that feel the need to bound in front of your vechile:

1.  Scan the road ahead of you a good mile to two miles at a time from side to side while constantly checking yoru mirrors for vechiles.  Watch for anything moving on the sides of the road, in the road ahead of you and be prepaid to stop at any given time.

2.  If the weather premits drive with your brights on and be courtous to other cars and dim them when needed.  The brighter lights give you a wider area to watch while driving.

3.  Do the dayum speed limit when in areas of heavy suicidal deer activity.  The faster you go the faster your going to hit a deer.  The slower you go the less likely your going to see any movement because you are too worried about watching........and bomb you have a deer crushing your vechile.

4.  If possible make sure you have headlights that sit high up on your vehicle..........that way your not blinding the deer and scaring them into staying put and committing suicide.

5.  If you can't have the headlights up high, feel free to try those lil gadgets sold to put on your vechile to make a high pitch sound to try and scare away the sucidal deer.  They don't always work.

6.  Always make sure your brakes and horn is in working order.  Because you will be braking and if the sucidal deer insist on throwing themselves at your vechile, use your horn to wake them out of their suicidal state and get them moving.

7.  Make sure your insurance is paid because unlike a stupid ass driver, deer do NOT have insurance and can not pay to have the damage to your car fixed if it is still fixable or driveable.

Good luck in your Spring driving this year and try to stay away from those suicidal deer if you can.  If you can't hope you have good insurance!
