Hitchcock @ MindSay
- Bellissima (1951) Visconti can be wonderful or terrible for me. I knew from the first moment, though that this film was something special. Anna Magnani was great in it. And no matter what occurred in the film, you were on a delightful ride that was immaculate in its execution. I LOVE IT!!!!! This is why I watch films, for a movie like this.
- Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) (Theater)
- Shopworn (1932) Video Clip
- The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle (1939)
- The Locked Door (1929)
- Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol (1990) Pretty awesome interviews. Viva says she never did drugs, but it always seemed like she was on drugs so she fit in well.
- Ambitieux, Les (2006) Catherine Corsini only has three movies. All three are very female driven and the endings are usually weak. However, I usually end up loving her movies.
- No Man's Land (2001) This was a really good movie and I've been meaning to see it forever.
- Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
- Bail Jumper (1990) Saw it bc it had Eszther Balint in it and it just happened to be at my library. it was ok, nothing special.
- Little Man, What Now? (1934) Disappointing.
- Doulos, Le (1962) A pretty good French gangster movie. I was unable to finish this when I rented it the first time, due to time constraints. However, I got to finish it. Jean-Paul Belmondo is great.
- The Huddle (1932)
- Je t'aime moi non plus (1976) Not great, but the music was excellent.
- The Goose and the Gander (1935)
- You Can't Get Away with Murder (1939)
- Cynara (1932)
- Fièvre monte à El Pao, La (1959) A pretty good political-drama from Luis Bunuel.
- The Mating Season (1951) I took this social drama pretty seriously until the last part of the movie when it became totally funny (yes the whole thing is supposed to be a comedy, but whatev).
- Violons du bal, Les (1974)
- Smart People (2008)
- 27 Dresses (2008)
- Live Fast, Die Young (2008) (Theater)

- Flesh and the Devil (1926)
- While the City Sleeps (1956)

- A Woman of Affairs (1928)
- Wise Blood (1979) directed by Jhon Huston
- P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang. (1982) (TV)
- Portraits chinois (1996) An interested character study in people who "change" over time. Great actors, but the story wasn't as compelling.
- Année sainte, L' (1976)
- Stranded (1935)
- Three Comrades (1938)
- The Great McGinty (1940)
- The Family That Preys (2008) (Theater) Pretty good. It was like a TV movie at times and got better toward the end.
- "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: Anyone for Murder? (#2.20)" (1964)
- "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: Beast in View (#2.21)" (1964)
- "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: Behind the Locked Door (#2.22)" (1964) I had been dying to see this episode, because it was with Gloria Swanson. In fact this was the main reason I started to watch The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. Was delightful to see her, but the girl who played her daughter was a dumb character.
- "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: A Matter of Murder (#2.23)" (1964)
- "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: The Gentleman Caller (#2.24)" (1964)
- "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: The Ordeal of Mrs. Snow (#2.25)" (1964)

Top Movies this month:
- Angèle (1934) An exceedingly powerful Marcel Pagnol film (responsible for Jean de Florette the novel). It seems that everything he writes is amazing. Definitely check it out!
- Femme du boulanger, La /The Baker's Wife (1938)
- Johnny Apollo (1940) I really enjoyed this father and son / gangster film noir.
- Secret Beyond the Door... (1948) Wow, I really loved this one from start to finish. They showed it at a local theater recently, but I chose not to go bc I was sick. I'm glad they had a VHS copy at my video store. Basically, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is one of my favorite books and every movie adaptation has ruined it. Weird, because my favorite director is Hitchcock. However, Fritz Lang takes this Rebecca-esque story and the delivery is flawless. This has great potential to be one of my favorite films of all time. However, I really want to rewatch it sometime. However, I'm not sure when I'll get a chance. Really, too bad. A lovely story, great acting, and Fritz Lang goes above and beyond in directing this. I'm forever in his debt.
- Vieil homme et l'enfant, Le /The Two of Us (1967) Very nice Criterion edition with a great booklet and short film from the director, Claude Berri (see shorts)
- Schpountz, Le (1938) Amazing movie. I'm loving everything I'm seeing by Marcel Pagnol. Amazing.
- À coeur joie / Two weeks in September (1967) Brigitte Bardot & supplemental documentary Not as bad as the 3.4 rating on IMDB, it's actually not that bad, but loses steam near the end.
- Bal, Le (1983) Weird strange "mime" movie.
- The Beast with Five Fingers (1946) In this movie there was a scene that Bunuel laid out for producers that they rejected. They ended up using the scene in the film and Bunuel was going to sue Warner Bros., but the legal team was so powerful. On Wiki it says that Bunuel came up with the idea for the movie, instead of just one scene. ?? Remade into The Hand (Oliver Stone).
- Du skal ære din hustru / Master of the House (1925) Silent A decent film from Carl Theodor Dreyer.
- Édith et Marcel (1983) Kind of like a poor man's La Vie en Rose. I was moved at the end, but only because of the translation to the song "L'hymne d'amour" - never knew the words and they were beautiful.
- Léon Morin, prêtre (1961) Nothing like a sassy priest movie. Pretty good.
- The Miracle Woman (1931) A good Frank Capra movie. Maybe too over the top, but Barbara Stanwyck's performance is strong.
- Moderato cantabile (1960) Strong performances by Jeanne Moreau and J.P Belmondo and an intriguing story.
- Vie de château, La (1966) Excellent Deneuve/Rappeneau collaboration.
- Comment ça va? (1978) This Godard movie fails to be interesting, but the idea is adorable at least.
- Dance of the Vampires/ The Fearless Vampire Killers (USA)(1967) Not the greatest movie by Polanski by any means. I'm not sure if it was worth a watch.
- Événement le plus important depuis que l'homme a marché sur la lune, L' /A Slightly Pregnant Man (1973) I thought this Demy movie was good, despite its absurdity.
- A Guy Named Joe (1943)
- The Man Who Laughs (1928)
- Plaisir, Le (1952)
- Toute une vie / And Now My Love (1974) Interesting film about passages through time.
- Classe de neige, La/ Class Trip (1998) A disappointing "horror" film that wasn't very scary.
- Cosa avete fatto a Solange?/The School That Couldn’t Scream Solange (1972)
- Buddy Buddy (1981) Was supposed to be terrible, but I moderately enjoyed it due to Billy Wilder's direction.
- Blade af Satans bog /Leaves from Satan's Book (1921) Not as interesting as some of other Dreyer's movies, this goes over too familiar territory. It was ok.
- Hélas pour moi/Woe is Me (1993) I was very fatigued BY this movie. At least Gerard Depardieu is in it. It was weird and dealt with identity.
- Szerelem/Love (1971) This film was okay.
- Generale della Rovere, Il (1959) Good Rossellini movie.
- Guerre est finie, La/The War is Over (1966) Alain Resnais
- Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson (1976) Altman, so bad it was amusing
- Killer of Sheep (1977) A good watch. I'll post a review separately.
- Comment je me suis disputé... (ma vie sexuelle) / My Sex Life (1996) Really funny, semi-racy.
- Kontroll (2003) Pretty darn good movie.
- Cassandra's Dream (2007) (Theater)
- Music and Lyrics (2007)
- Wild River (1960) Not Elia Kazan's best movie. Quite a wonder why it was so long and so esteemed.
- Act of Violence (1948) I don't know why, but I don't tend to like Fred Zinneman's movies.
- J'accuse! (1938) Wow, an excellent movie from Abel Gance. I wasn't expecting to be so moved by it. Wonderful dead people - you'll see.
- Vengeance d'une femme, La / A Woman's Revenge (1990) A low budget movie with Isabelle Huppert and Beatrice Dalle (?!), it's mainly talky and in one room. But whatever. Hard to track down, but I wasn't even trying, mysteriously came across it
- Armored Car Robbery (1950) A really good film noir.
- These Wilder Years (1956) Cagney and Stanwyck have some great moments.
- Cronaca di un amore/ Story of a Love Affair (1950) Antonioni's first film so I didn't adore it as much as the rest of his films.
- Amiche, Le (1955) A good Antonioni movie exploring some relationship issue. Something was missing from it, but overall a "girl" movie which is weird coming from this director.
- Frau im Mond Woman in the Moon (By Rocket to the Moon) (1929)
- Rancho Notorious (1952) Fritz Lang does a western! It was ok.
- Müde Tod, Der /Destiny (1921) Pretty interesting. Alfred Hitchcock's favorite film. Not mine, but there was some interesting imagery.
A discovery. I saw #1 and kept going, because I enjoyed his work.
- Zezowate szczescie/Bad Luck (1960) A very interesting and good Polish film.
- Eroica (1958) War movie about a drunk draft dodger.
- Czlowiek na torze/Man on the Tracks (1957) Might be my favorite or #1 might be my favorite. I'm undecided.
- Pasazerka /Passenger (1963) Unfinished film and unfortunately, it wasn't great because it wasn't put together the way the director intended. Munk died in his early forties due to a car accident (very unfortunate).
- see Top Movies for additional Marcel Pagnol films
- Topaze (1951) This movie was good, but not as good as the rest of the Marcel Pagnol movies I've seen lately.
- Fille du puisatier, La / The Well-Digger's Daughter (1940)
- Lettres de mon moulin, Les /Letters from My Windmill (1954)
- Marius (1931) Going through Marcel Pagnol's filmography, this was another enjoyable movie.
- Amour par terre, L' / Love on the Ground (1984) A really good Rivette movie.
- Duelle (une quarantaine) (1976) Second favorite. It was way better than Noroit.
- Noroît (1976)
- Paris nous appartient / Paris Belongs to Us (1960)
- Werckmeister harmóniák (2000) My first Bela Tarr film. I didn't like it and thought it was boring so I'm glad the next one was better.
- Kárhozat/Damnations (1988) Another wonderful surprise. Bela Tarr had only bored me thus far. It is great to know that he has done this great movie.
Paris vu par... /Six in Paris(1965) None of the following was written by me except the commentary in bold. I used what was written as a guide to keep track of what I thought.
Six vignettes set in different sections of Paris, by six directors. St. Germain des Pres (Douchet) ok a little boring, Gare du Nord (Rouch) ok /was some annoying screaming, Rue St. Denis (Pollet) ok the younger guy was annoying, are stories of love, flirtation and prostitution; Place d'Etoile (Rhomer) pretty good and Montparnasse et Levallois (Godard) concerns a haberdasher and his umbrella I had seen this before and it was not bad but far from the best ; and La Muette (Chabrol), a bourgeois family and earplugs this one is my favorite, it was well-done and exceptional and funny but morbid A+. Except for the idiotic Godard segment which just plain sucks this guy is exaggerating it wasn't that bad, all the other directors did a **** of a job shooting these 16mm short films.

- "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Lamb to the Slaughter (#3.28 )" (1958) There was a 15 minute special on the last AH disc I rented. It said that this was probably the most acclaimed episode, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. I really liked it, but I would only say it was very good. Besides, the "special" sort of spoiled the episode, describing it in detail (???).

- "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: The Impromptu Murder (#3.38 )" (1958)
- "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Little White Frock (#3.39)" (1958) Not a great one to end on, kinda blah
- "The Directors: The Films of Robert Altman (#2.9)" (????) Really good overview of his work.
- "The Dick Cavett Show: Woody Allen" (1971) Pretty funny. Woody Allen a long time ago, even before his success with Annie Hall.
- All Eyes on Sharon Tate (1967) This 11 min. short was as funny as it was sad. Sharon Tate's promotional video was made after her first movie. They were counting on her to become a big star. Since this movie was made before her tragic death, it focused on her potential.
- Poulet, Le (1962) Came with the Criterion movie "The Two of Us" and was a good short by director Claude Berri.
- Campanadas a medianoche / Chimes at Midnight / Falstaff (1965) Saw the battle scene.
- Chat et la souris, Le / Cat & Mouse (1975) It was dubbed so I wasn't going to waste my time on it.
- Nouvelle vague / New Wave (1990) Had to give up on this Godard movie - can't really be called a movie. Just endlessly repetitive and boring dialog.
- John and Mary (1969) I love Mia Farrow but probably wouldn't watch the whole thing. I caught the tail end of it and it looked ok.
- Aquamarine (2006) Really terrible and annoying film.
- Love Affair (1939) I tried watching it. And saw the ending but it didn't click with me.
Glass House - It is okay to kill your guardians. If they're bad. And they probably are.
Where the Truth Lies - When you're screwing your childhood hero in a hotel room and he leaves the next morning without a note or explantion, he will find a way to make YOU feel bad.
Unbreakable - No matter how cool you set up the story, audiences will find a way to hate you if there is no action.
Sunset Blvd. - Being a gigolo is a dangerous profession. & It's always fun to throw a funeral for a monkey.
Mulholland Dr. - You have to pretend to be a lesbian to break into showbiz. Being Nicole Kidman's best friend isn't good enough.
Crimes and Misdemeanors - Don't kill. You'll feel guilty.
Match Point (SPOILER!!!) - You can kill. And get away with it. Just make it look like a robbery.
Bonnie and Clyde - Stealing from banks is better than waitressing.
Young and Innocent - You can be a killer and get away with it with black makeup. Unless you have a twitch.
You've Got Mail - Never correspond with strangers online. You might fall in love with them and they might be your archnemesis in real life.
Big Daddy - Never have a 5 year plan. Your life will pan out better if you're a slacker who likes to eat at Hooter's.
Veronica Guerin - Don't sell drugs to kids.
Todo sobre mi madre - Penelope Cruz can act?!!?? WTF?????????????????
Mystic River - Don't dance on tables at 1 AM in the morning when your dad's friend is checking you out. You WILL end up dead.
I Heart Huckabees - Jude Law has breasts.
Les Choristes (The Chorus) - It's okay to steal children.
The Virgin Suicides - Even hot chicks can be unhappy.
The Three Faces of Eve - Don't force your kids to kiss grandma.
Psycho - Never take a shower at a motel owned by a taxidermist.
Frenzy - Never lie about why you're getting divorced. If your ex-wife ends up dead and she divorced you because of "extreme cruelty" it won't look good when you're the one who finds her dead in her office.
Eraserhead - Bandanges are there for a reason. Don't cut them unless you're a doctor.
Bend It Like Beckham - Playing soccer is fun for everyone!
The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom - The Austin Powers movies were a correct portrayal of the sixties.
Cri du hibou, Le AKA The Cry of the Owl - A "prowler" will oftentimes be more sane than the boyfriend of the girl he stalks.
and in honor of Amelia...
Nurse Betty - There is no such thing as an actor. What you see on TV is real.
FIN
Hitchcock tried to warn us.
And after being mauled by the pigeons in Venice’s Piazza San Marco, goosed by the geese in Edinburgh, dive bombed (and my hat stolen) by the lorikeets at Busch Gardens, knocked over by a running emu at a petting zoo, and generally shat upon by other winged wonders, you might think that I would have begun to have a clue. That maybe, just maybe, I would begin to suspect that perhaps birds just don’t like me quite as much as I like them.
But I, apparently, am a slow learner.
And so another chapter of the great Avian Book of Kill Trill begins.
Scene: A deserted beach. The sun is just beginning to push it’s sleepy head over the horizon, and preside over another gorgeous day. A lone female makes her way towards the beach.
At the waterfront, the gulls begin whispering to each other, shielding their words by tucking beaks under wings.
As the girl comes closer, they all immediately go into “sweet and innocent mode.”
Trill "Aw, look how sweet and innocent! That one's still sleeping."
Yet, even in her cheerfully unaware state, she begins to feel a faint sense of foreboding in the air... as if something is not quite right...
"Oh, look!" she exclaims"I have a leftover dinner roll in my pocket. Birdies want some bread crumbs?"
She begins crumbling the bread and throws out a handful.
Raucous calls pierce the dawn stillness, and she quickly finds herself surrounded by 500 very demanding new best friends.
Reaching deep in her pocket for the last few crumbs, she says “Sorry guys, that’s the last of the bread.”
The last thing she remembers is hundreds of sharp little beaks racing towards her as a high pitched squawk seemed to say “that’s ok… we’re ready for MEAT!”
I havent done any work in english in about three days now....:).....I hate that story. The Birds. Lame ass idea. And the Hitchcock movie is even worse. Cheesy as hell.
Anyway, my art teacher finally graded the collages and the value scale....I made a 97 and 95, respectively. I still think I shouldve gotten a 100 on the collage....I put a lot of time into that thing...and if she grades based on effort....Yeah.....I should have. But, it doesnt matter. I think it's awesome. And no one else I know did that well on it. :)
This Friday, so far, has been a sucky one.....It doesnt get much worse than this.
Love, Marge
