Crag Crest Hike- Labor Day Weekend
I like to venture along this trail at least once each year, enjoy the exertion, the views and the perspective. 6 1/2 miles over the top - about 11,200 ft altitude - along a ridge of volcanic rock. The wildflowers and fungi are an array of diversity. At summer's end the monsoonal clouds often gather midday, so an early start is in order.
We drove up Land's End Road Friday night after work.... pulled off the road and between some trees to camp on the edge of the mesa. S woke me in the middle of the night and beckoned me out of the camper shell, into the darkness and away from the trees. The starry sky above us was breathtaking with the milky way stretched dazzlingly from horizon to horizon and gazing toward the cliff edge... the lights of the city stretched across the valley below us. We held each other in the night chill and gazed in wonder at the world.
The next morning we awoke to the golden light of sunrise playing on the trees (pictures taken through the camper shell window with my phone camera!)
We drove to the trail head and cooked a hearty breakfast - camp stove on the tail gate. We were hiking by 9:00 a.m..
Join us on the trail....
A surprise around every corner!
Wildflowers abound - hanging on to summer.... others are fading, preparing for autumn.
The expansive views are amazing... We linger at the top- the whole reason for wanting to be here.... the thrill of being on top of the world.
Mushrooms push their way through the soil in nooks and crannies Once we have descended to lakeside, below- we journey on along the 4 mile lower edge of the loop. The weather has been superb.... we stop to eat our peanut butter sandwiches for lunch...... and the hail storm begins
Leaving the trail saturated and flooded- a series of slush-lined mud puddles.
The end of our 10 mile adventure found us wet, cold, and tired... but I can think of lots of worse ways to spend a Saturday!
We wrapped up the evening with a presentation at the visitor center.... Fungi of the Grand Mesa by Jim Worrell. A closer look at identification.
Perhaps the large brown mushrooms we saw were some of the best eating around - the king bolete. Next time, perhaps ... a sample.
A long glorious day to say farewell to summer.
A night of thunderstorms and rainfall.

If It Looks Like Rain And Smells Like Rain ......

Hummm ........
Peace. J.
I'm sure this isn't the last you've heard from me today .....

The Barn
I made the attempt yesterday to get out and take some photos. I hiked about 4 miles with my camera bag over my shoulder and my tripod in hand. I got a nice hike, but the pics weren't what I was hoping for. I was expecting more spring color (versus how dead everything still looked), it was overcast, and when I got to the location I really wanted to shoot, I couldn't get clear shots due to all the overgrowth. Here's the best of the few I actually took. I did, however, see about 20 heron(s?) all together in one area on my way home. Unfortunately, I had no place to pull over and the light was quickly fading.
Perspiration, Sore Muscles and Bingo
As a teenager and up until very recently I was someone who dealt with underarm perspiration. We are not talking a little bit of sweat here ..... we are talking sweat rings to the waist kind of sweat. Which is quite embarrassing ..... not only as a teenager but as an adult. And it wasn't everyday all the time ..... it seemed to run in different periods of my life .... of course most predominate when life was at its most impressive / painful.
While working at a State Park here in California and having to wear awful uniforms ..... light green shirt / dark green pants ..... and it was during this time that I was going through a very rough perspiration stage. So bad that I started putting extra strength kotex strategically placed under my arms to help soak up some of the sweat ..... it worked well enough but I just couldn't raise my arms ..... and the job did require some of that .... but I was so embarrassed by the horrible sweat rings that I didn't care about the kotex armpits.
Then the internet came around ..... and one of the first things I ever researched was excessive perspiration ..... and I found the answer.
Certain Dri Antiperspirant.
This stuff works. Use as directed and you will no longer have an issue .... that I can promise.
What brought this little post on you ask? Well .... yesterday I mentioned to Dave that I had not had night sweats since I had started taking the Calcium / Magnesium before bed as my hair cutter lady had suggested. I had gone six nights with out them and not only that I found I was sleeping much much sounder. And if I do wake up ..... I tend to go right back to sleep, no tossing and turning for hours on end. The two things that the antiperspirant and the supplements have in common? Magnesium. Magic stuff. So for your arm pits or menopause ...... I highly recommend these two products.
Now the hot flashes are still very much there and there is no slowing them. Grrrr!
I did not even consider exercising today ..... for those that read yesterdays post .... you probably already know what I am going to say. MY LEGS ARE FREAKING KILLING ME! I should say my thighs. Now I have been working these legs out pretty damn hard the last few months ..... I figured any kind of leg pain from a steep uphill jaunt would not be a consideration ..... I was wrong. Seriously wrong. Holy Crap! There I muscles I have not even touched apparently. Bastards! It hurts so bad to stand up, sit down, walk ..... its like I haven't exercised in years. OUCH!
Bingo night ..... I don't want to go. No ..... I don't. I'm not in the mood to be beat up by mean little old ladies that I can't defend myself against. And I have a really funny feeling I will be calling tonight. How did I get mixed up in this shit again? Remind please so I don't do it again anytime soon. ****NO BINGO TONIGHT**** YAY YAY YAY ......
Well that is my super swell post of the day. Enjoy your Monday all. I'm sure I've got to do something today ..... and eventually I will figure out what it is. In the meantime .....
Peace. J.

Sunset Hill Cachin'
"Sounds like the kind of day that drives me to bundle up and head out for a long walk.... preferably up a steep hill.... to self-medicate in the fresh air and open space."
Just before this comment to iliketiedye tonight, a new geocache listing popped up 25 miles West in the UTA-CO border region - little area called "Dinosaur Valley" . . . . quarries mark the spots where ancient bones have been recovered from the Mancos shale and interstate mountain bike trails take off into the rocky hills. The cache description -
". . .approximately a half mile hike and 450 foot elevation gain from the parking lot by the interstate. The hike takes you though small cliff areas but does not require any difficult scrambling if you take the right route."
The timing of publication was perfect for a sunset hike. I called a newbie friend (boej) who dropped everything to join us and we headed for the border...
Quite an evening workout- a few spots where hands were required- and pauses to catch our breath...but a great view in return. Big, nearly full moon glowed above the pink of the horizon on the way down. Took a bit of looking to locate the cache, but once we were up there, going down without the find was NOT an option!
Forgot the camera, of course, but had my Palm in my pocket to pull out and snap a couple of particularly poor quality. Captured the moment, though... my friend's 4th find - first FTF!
Pulled home after 8 p.m.- starving (I actually had dinner in the crock pot!) ... so I won't get everything needed done again tonight... but I suppose "having a life" just needs to take priority sometimes.
The kids were as reluctant to get back to school today, and as talkative to try to "catch up" as all the teachers were yesterday..... With state testing in full focus beginning tomorrow and taking over the next three weeks- District assessments after that....things won't settle down till Memorial Day. School's over the week before that! LOL . It's a downhill slide from here. Time flies... . . the good and bad of getting old, apparently.
