I'm pretty excited because tonight I get to see an advanced screening of “Land of the Dead”. At long last, Romero returns to the zombie flicks. I can't begin to tell you how excited I am. I love horror movies and flesh-eating zombies are some of the best.
I'm also a little nervous too. Romero has been the un-disputed king of the zombie genre. He carefully brought political satire and horror elements together. Then... the movies stopped coming. The big film companies wouldn't give him the money he needed to continue making zombie flicks. Since that time though, we have seen a smart resurgence of the walking dead. Danny Boyle brought a very smart picture together with 28 Days Later. Boyle handed us a look at human nature vs. instinct while delivering the scares. Simon Pegg and crew gave use Shaun of the Dead which is a great homage to the zombie flicks while still standing on its own dead legs. “Shaun” is probably the best written zombie comedy/horror movie EVAR!
Then there was the remake of Romero's “Dawn of the Dead”. While it didn't compare to the movies mentioned above nor did it have the political undertones of the original... it was a fast-paced action/horror movie with zombies. Romero had nothing to with the remake, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. It was fun.
The reason I'm so scared is I feel the king has to come out and defend his crown. It is easy to defend a person's title when they haven't had to compete in sometime. Now that he is in the ring, I fear that he hasn't been paying attention to how we do things nowadays. I don't think he could do his zombie movies of old and have it sell.
Of course, he could also blow my mind with something I've never seen before. I could be worried about nothing.
I won't know anything for about 7-1/2 hours. The tension could kill me.
