I'm Seeing Red and That is GREAT!

Today is Go Red Day in recognition of heart disease awareness in women.  At work it was nice to see many of the staff members, both men and women, wearing red.

As I type this, my Aunt (Aint) Faye is in the hospital now suffering from congestive heart failure. Get well soon Aint Faye so we can partner up on another spades game again. I won't even fuss at you for sandbagging this time. I also won't make fun of you squinting because you "forgot" to wear your glasses while we're playing... Okay, I can't really promise you that one! LOL!

"What are those? Spades or clubs?"

"Neither Aint Faye...those are hearts."

"Really? Umpf...look-a-yonduh!"

As a member of the Mindsay Estrogen Network or (M.E.N.) (okay, so I made this up), I want to remind all of my Sisters that we need to get our yearly check-ups and keep an eye on our weight, blood pressure and HDL and LDL cholesterol levels. If you smoke, quit or at least try to slow down. Limit your caffeine intake and become more physically active.

I promised Sandyquill that I would take a picture of myself wearing my red today.

Love ya Ainny Faye!

Red Wine Health Benefits

Study finds red wine benefit
_____________________________________

A recent study conducted by researchers at Yale has found that two to three glasses of red wine daily is good for the heart. Dr. Bauer Sumpio, a professor at Yale in New Haven, CT found that fruit, particularly berries, have polyphenols--anti-oxidants that slow cell deterioration. Polyphenols also help prevent plaque build up on the smooth muscle cells and inhibit platelet formation, which can lead to blood clotting.

"The current consensus is that it is not just the alcohol, but something else," said Sumpio, section chief of vascular surgery in the Department of Surgery. "A better understanding of the health benefits of red wine and the specific polyphenolic extracts with these properties would be a great contribution to society."

Heart healthy eating for better health

Article from Heart Health

Eating heart-healthy meals doesn't mean giving up some of those rich favorite family recipes for bland, boring food. With a few changes, you can keep the heart and add the health to most any recipes. Here's how:

Milk/Cream/Sour Cream

  • Cook with low-fat (1 percent fat) or fat-free dry or evaporated milk, instead of whole milk or cream.
  • Instead of sour cream, blend 1 cup low-fat, unsalted cottage cheese with 1 tablespoon fat-free milk and 2 tablespoons lemon juice, or substitute plain, fat free or low-fat yogurt or sour cream.
Spices/Flavorings
  • Use a variety of herbs and spices in place of salt.
  • Use low-sodium bouillon and broths, instead of regular bouillons and broths.
  • Use a small amount of skinless smoked turkey breast, instead of fatback to lower fat content but keep taste.
  • Use skinless chicken thighs, instead of neck bones.
Oils/Butter

  • Use cooking-oil spray to lower fat and calories.
  • Use a small amount of vegetable oil instead of lard, butter, or other fats that are hard at room temperature.
  • In general, diet margarines are not well-suited for baking. Instead, to cut saturated fat, use regular soft margarine made with vegetable oil.
  • Choose margarine that lists liquid vegetable oil as the first ingredient on the food label.
