I've Got A Frog In My Pocket And He Hates Your Face
Mindsay, for all intents and purposes, has become my blogging sanctuary. Thanks to myspace's friend feature combined with everyone on Earth having one or more pages, this has become my place to rant about things I can't rant about outright anymore. It doesn't even matter to me if only a small group of people read it here. Just having a place to rant in the first place is good.

I've been sick since Saturday evening. I worked Monday and I'm here today but in all, I'm not feeling 100%. I spent the last day or so getting caught up with my BBC Planet Earth DVD box set, a series I HIGHLY recommend to anyone remotely curious about the world at large. It is seriously one of the best science-related presentations ever created, using super high-tech camera equipment to capture footage that the naked human eye is not likely to ever witness on its own. Just beautiful cinematography and use of slow-motion trickery. The narration is top notch for fans of British people. I especially appreciate the way nothing is censored in terms of the crazy things wildlife creatures do, even as it relates to cannibalism (stupid monkeys). I'm getting Blue Planet: Seas Of Life next......can't wait!

What else? I got Kane And Lynch: Dead Men for PS3. The game bears a striking resemblance to Hitman, which I didn't love so much. Also, what is the deal with the PS3 games? Is it just me or does everything look kind of wonky, especially in HD? There must be some truth to the whole mapping + loading times issue because EVERY Xbox 360 game I've played loads faster and looks better on my HDTV and I'm running the 360 using VGA cables instead of HDMI. Still, movies look AWESOME on my TV. Whatever.

I think I'm becoming a fan of David Cross. I used to not like him or his comedy much because the DVD of Let America Laugh sucks but I've seen some of his act on YouTube and his open letter to Larry The Cable Guy is one of my favorite things to have read in months.

HDTV on the comput er
Well I found an interesting article. After leaving a comment on sandyquill's blog about wanting to turn my computer in to an HDTV savvy device, I found the follow bit:

"If you spend $80 to put an old fashioned TV antenna on your roof, and $100 to buy a Dvico FusionHDTV adapter card for your PC, you can receive and record high definition broadcast TV while viewing it on your existing computer monitor. If you already get cable TV, you can buy a splitter for a few dollars, hook the cable up to the FusionHDTV card, and (in most cities) get the local broadcast HDTV channels without a rooftop antenna. You then have everything you need to play with the technology. You haven’t spent thousands of dollars on a big display, and you won’t impress any of your friends. That is the target audience of this paper. Although you will not learn how to spend a lot of money, understanding all the terms and ideas will make you a better informed consumer when you are ready to take that big step."

The rest of the article can be found here.

It's an interesting ready.  A long article but very informative :D

Yeah...T.V.'s down
So our 11-year-old TV blew out on Monday. Yeah... It was like, 29 inches...

My Dad is "looking" to buy a new one. But apparently he says my sister and I have to research which is the best type of TV to buy and why. It's bullshit! I have a research paper due on the 28th (then I gotta start studying for mid-terms), and my sister is still adjusting to her new school. THERE IS NO WAY WE CAN DO IT.

He almost bought one on Election Day. It would have been a 37 inch LCD. It would have been decent. I wouldn't have complained that much. My sister and my Mom, though, thought that I should have had a say in the matter though (I go to a private school), so he didn't buy it. They wanted the 42 inch one. Now I know 42 is better, but my Dad works for Ford. Do the math. I would like the 42 inch. Hell, I would like the 66 inch one even more. But unless prices dramatically fall like a meteor to Earth,  I know why he would have gotten the 37 inch.

In the mean time, we will  be watching TV on a dinky 20 inch. It's freaking tiny. I was able to lift it. It's not that big compared to the 29 inch. Good thing there's a Windows Media Center Computer also! Problem is, it's not in the living room, where friends and family can watch it.

 Sooooo....Yeah.... sucks...Oh! Also, I have 3 tests tomorrow! And I'm not ready!!!

Who decided this?
DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT HDTV
and impending switch to digital broadcast reception?

If I understand this correctly, by sometime in 2009, the government has set a specific date for the major permanent transition from analog reception to digital for consumer television viewing.  Just like, in the early 60s (wasn’t it?) when television went from black & white to color.

I just last weekend bought a “better” TV than I’ve ever had.  It’s a 27” RCA and it only cost $240!  Now I know why - they’re being phased out!  Just like the 8mm, reel-to-reel movies, and then the AM transistor radios, then the 8-track, and most recently cassette audio tapes and VHS video tapes and 35mm cameras.  There are going to be some outrageous sales on the “old” SDTVs and the cost for the converter box is most likely to be ridiculous, but predictable.

Between now and 2009, consumers will need a special HDTV or a converter (approx. $300) AND a subscription to the actual service, expected to start at $5 per month.  Surely, Comcast will have its hand in this cookie jar!  Otherwise, who will be the major players?  I want to get some stock now!  Someone’s getting ready to clean up!  Are they on Capitol Hill or on Pennsylvania Avenue?  Who knows at this point?  The American people sure weren’t in it - no one was privy to this.  Now it’s a done deal!

So, we’ve got 3 years to save up for this huge change.  We do not have a choice.  This will happen - our government says so.  Evidently, a deal has already been struck between the powers that be, without any constituent input.  Was it on the ballot and I just missed it?

I am all for progress and achievement; but, I have mixed feelings about this subject.  On one hand, it’s a  remarkable advancement in entertainment technology but, on the other hand, why is it being handled this way, so autocratic, so clandestine?  I don’t get it, do you?
