Great Old Songs @ MindSay

Ceremonies
"Respect should be given those indigenous nations who still carry on
their ceremonies; still following the ancient laws of nature with songs
and ceremonies."
--Oren R. Lyons, Spokesman, Traditional Circle of Elders

Many of our Tribes still have the ceremonies, songs and traditions.
Today, the ceremonies and songs are coming back even stronger. The
Elders have a lot of this knowledge. The young people need to learn
these songs and traditions from the Elders. This is the strength of the
people. The ancient Wisdom and Knowledge of ancient Laws are hidden in
the ceremonies and songs. We should seek out these songs and
ceremonies.

Great Spirit, teach me the songs and ceremonies. Make my eyes open to
see.

songs

"Your power comes from the songs."
--Ethel Wilson, COWICHAN

If you do not know any of the songs, ask an Elder to teach you. Get
yourself a drum. When you sing a song and play the drum, you'll be
surprised how your mind, body, and spirit will react. Everything
becomes calm and joyful. Our bodies love the songs. The songs allow us
to touch the hand of the Creator. When we sing and touch the Great
Spirit's hand, He gives us power. Songs are another way to pray.

My Grandfather, teach me a song today.

NR Ray
This Mindsay thing is pretty great. You never know who will be reading your blog. There is a famous DJ on XM Radio named Ray Knight. (NR Ray) He is currently running the new country station "US 17". It's country music hits from the 80's and 90's which is something we middle aged folks love. Right after the station went on the air we sent him an email requesting that he play lots of songs by our friends "The Confederate Railroad Band". He wrote us back saying he would indeed be playing songs by "The Railroad". Since then we have heard many "Railroad" songs on the channel so the other day we wrote him again. This is the exact comment that I "cut and pasted". {We heard "Jesus And Mama" a little while ago. That's a great song. Keep up the good work.} All of our emails have our website address in the signature at the bottom, and the website has a link to our blog here. This is what Mr. Knight wrote back. {Thanks guys!  BTW:  love your blog!} I'm pretty sure he read the one about George Jones. You might think it's corny, but we think it's pretty cool that this famous guy took the time to read our blog and send us a nice note about it.

Dolly Parton...and covers.
I have my trusty mp3 player and I am at work listening to Dolly Parton's bluegrass rendition of Stairway to Heaven. Now before you guffaw, I thought the same thing when I heard that she remade it. It is actually quite good. She is one of the few country artists that I really like. She is a great singer and a great actor. Just look at Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 9 to 5, and Steel Magnolias if you want proof. Anyhow, back to the song, it is really good, she changes some of the words, but it really works. She also just released an album of all cover songs. She even redid one of my favorite Cat Stevens songs, Where Do the Children Play?, which is usually a sacrilege. I was actually surprised to have liked it, and to make it better Cat Stevens himself plays acoustic guitar on the song. Most Cat Steven's remakes have fallen flat in my opinion, like Sheryl Crow doing her vapid rendition The First Cut is the Deepest. Then a few years back I think it was Mr. Big who did a remake of Wild World...yeach. Anyhow to make a long rant short, her bluegrass updates of some famous songs are actually quite refreshing. If anyone wants to hear any just drop me a line.
