Google Ads @ MindSay

Was It Something I Said?

MindSay ads from their Google associates program are usually transparent to mejust a piece of UI clutter my eyes have become trained to ignore.  So when I detected ads that even I might click on I was a bit startled.

How often have these been there?  What other ads have I missed?  What ads are popping up in previous posts, others' posts, political and personal posts?  Hmm, damn ad programs in the blogosphere; now I'm gonna be looking.

[But don't even get me started on Suggested Tags.  The tags MindSay proposed for the celebrity/Tom Cruise post were so inflammatory, I suspect Mr. Cruise has the makings of a lawsuit on his hands.  Perhaps I'll bring it up at Christmas dinner...]

[..."Stop learning Spanish backwards???"  What the hell does that mean interrobang.  ¿Does it have anything to do with those funny looking inverted question marks that precede questions?]

Well, time for an actual post. The Internet is the stage o' the world, wonder what will happen here.

At the moment I am working on four websites independantly, and two jointly (which is plenty considering I hand code everything out of Notepad; I can't stand WYSIWYG editors). Basically, business is doing well. I think I'll be finishing up two of them soon and picking up a new one over the holiday, which is great. The thing that interests me, however, is how some people find me. I'm one person on the internet. I've gone and created what I feel is a handle that sticks in your head pretty well (Sir Whilms even seems odd to me), but I still would never expect people to distinguish me from any of the other 1E100 web designers out there. (Ugh, a Google in that notation... I'm such a nerd).

Google, actually, ties in with this post pretty well, but that's for later.

Basically, I've never once bought an ad. Never. I rarely pay any attention to ads, no matter how well they fit in with the context of a page. I just find forums, establish myself as someone who makes (good) websites, and things just happen. Any aspiring web designers may want to write that one down.

And now we move into the subject of web advertising. I'm pretty sure every seasoned web surfer on earth has become banner-blind. If you see something that looks remotely like a banner ad on any side of any page, it gets ignored. When ad firms figured this out, they designed annoying DHTML and Flash ads that litterally hijack your web surfing experience by moving/popping up/combusting smack dab in the middle of what you're trying to read. The very concept of forcing a users computer to do something (open a window), or literally stealing attention by moving in front of the actual content, just to show ads for what is invariably a ho-hum service makes my blood boil. Google Ads are the overachievers of web advertisements. They work well, they're driven by very powerful technology, and the ad seller can change the colors to blend with their site design better (which scores extra points with me, I'm obsessive over that sort of thing).

....

Ok, that was a bit of a mind dump. The odd thing is, I just suddenly ran out of anything to say at all. I work on websites and prefer Google Ads for their coolness.

Uh, that is all.

(I think tomorrow I'll spill my thoughts on something slightly more intersting... it's like 1:00 AM here and I really need some sleep)

[out there]

I've never been a fan of Google ads. Especially on Mindsay.

I realize the need for them - it's expensive to run a website in
general, much less one as complex the place we call our blogging
home. Still, when the ads came to appear, I was
disappointed. I didn't mind so much having them on the "main
page", but having them on every reply page just bugs me.

I knew they were not going away, though, so I began to seek the humor
in them in lieu of my griping. Every once in awhile, the ads "pick"
rather comical keywords from the blog posts that give me a chuckle or
two. (And yes, I do have a dry sense of humor and yes, I am
easily amused - like Google ads on reply pages, that's just the way it is! Deal with it!)

Today was such a day. The banner ad that appears above one of my reply pages amused me. Twice.

The banner features a woman on the left, staring wistfully off in the distance. To her right reads the caption. TRUE LOVE: We'll help you find him. On the right, there is a bare-chested man with morning-messy-styled hair and two-day stubble. (Hmm...I think someone overshot the target audience by a blog or twelve. Anyway...)

Enter laugh #1. For me. It's good to know that true love is out there. And I can find it. Through Google ads. Should I ever find myself craving a connection with a man who cannot afford a shirt or a razor, I now know that I can solicit assistance in finding him. Online.

Who will be there to help me in my time of need? Enter laugh #2. For me. Apparantly, I need only visit www.CaliforniaPsychics.com for all of my stubble-faced shirtless boy needs. If I ask one FREE question, the boy just might be mine.

This is all so unfortunate, though, because to me stubble-faced shirtless boys tend to be even more annoying than Google ads. (But I'm sure that's just because I've not met the right one yet, right? Uh huh. Sure. Target practice people!) However, I would be willing to sacrifice said boy on the altar of paranormal sciences (i.e. give him away to one of you) if only to test the skills of these Psychic Investigators from Cal-ee-for-nigh-ay.

Any takers? Come on! True Love is out there. Way out there. If nothing else, Mindsay will get some revenue by having the link clicked. And perhaps they'll use said revenue to buy the poor boy a flannel and some shaving cream. Everyone's a winner!
