I finally watched the pilot episode of FX's new show,
Dirt, from last week. Initial impressions go like this...
I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say I'm hooked. I'm certainly not hooked enough to go out of my way to watch the episodes when they air. Last night's episode is sitting on my DVR. I may watch it tonight and I may not watch it until next week. Who knows?
I think I liked the supporting cast much more than Courtney Cox. She did an okay job, but the rest of the cast is phenomenal. I love their casting choices for the crazy (literally) photographer and the struggling actor. The basketball player seems well-cast, as well. Ms. Cox on the other hand... I don't know. I think I'll eventually accept her in the role, but I'm not instantly believing her in it. Comparing her to another friend, it's not like when I first saw Matthew Perry on "Studio 60". I instantly saw the new character and not Chandler, which is a testament to the actor after playing the same character for 10 years straight. I think Courtney Cox has the ability to make me forget about Monica, but it wasn't instantaneous.
As for the story, I'm intrigued. As the first episode was coming to a close, I was concerned that they blew their whole wad in the first hour. It ended so sensationally that I didn't understand how they could possibly do that week after week, just with different celebrities. Then I saw the "This Season on Dirt" promo that followed the episode and saw where they were going with the show. The sensational events from the first episode were not complete stories, but just the beginning of larger story arcs. They aren't going to leave these characters behind and find new Hollywood folks each week, but instead are going to follow these stories from week to week. This I like.
To wrap it all up, I thought the show as good, but it wasn't great. I will continue to watch it, but it's not high on my priority list. Other shows will get pulled from the DVR first, as well as other activities that are not TV-related.
Dirt has potential, but it's going to have to show it in the next few weeks or they are going to lose me.
