Milk is a Hollywood feature film directed by Gus Van Sant that stars Sean Penn, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna and Josh Brolin.
Harvey Milk was a Gay Rights activist in 1970's San Francisco. Just one year after winning a post as City Supervisor (the first openly gay politician ever to be elected to public office in the United States) Harvey ran into some serious trouble with another councilor who ran for the same post on Family Values ticket. Josh Brolin does a good job as the old fashioned thinker, Dan White, but Sean Penn could win an Academy Award for his portrayal of Harvey Milk.
Directed by Gus Van Sant, the biopic must have been helped along by the success of
The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, an Academy Award winning documentary on the same subject.
Straight guys, be warned... about four minutes into the film there's a love scene that's hard for heterosexual men to watch, and if you do go see this movie in the theatre I would sit up front and turn around to look at the crowd during this two minute scene (trust me you'll know the one when it arrives) man, I bet every guy in the room is looking at his shoes.
But after those painful moments you soon forget Sean Penn is playing Harvey Milk, and the character really comes alive... You root for him in the political rallies, feel sorry for him at funerals, and really come to celebrate and rejoice in his struggle.
All that being said, I'm pretty sure MILK isn't something you'll rent to watch with the guys.
I have some official SWAG from the moviethat I'm selling online. Here's a link to a
Milk movie hat and tshirt on eBay.
