Fox @ MindSay

Nearly a year ago I had the inspiration to draw from myth and create this image of a lady with a spirit fox, but since I've been busy trying to finish a comic book project (one that's lasted for over two years, YIKES!) I've had to seriously cut back on doing too many personal projects. And yet, while mustering up the motivation to finish the book, I turn back to older drawings and gradually finish them. I always want to finish what I start, it just takes awhile to get to completion. And when I complete something, I'm always a little sad after I'm done. I have to keep working to keep myself happy.  Whenever I get online, sometimes I feel like I'm wasting the time I need to be at the drawing board, but then I take an image I've drawn and experiment with it on Photoshop to see it in different colors with effects and I look back at what I've done and a new story forms. But then I feel guilty for neglecting someone else's story, a story I promised to illustrate, a project I thought would only take me six months to achieve, but I was wrong. The pressure is intense. I don't know if I can describe it to you effectively.  I just read an article by John Howe (one of my favorite fantasy artists and one I consider a big influence) that made me feel less alone when it comes to not being motivated to illustrate other people's writing/work.  I don't have it right in front of me, so I'm paraphrasing from memory, but he expressed how unsatisfied he still is with work he's done for other people.  I liken it to falling in love: you can place two people together and they can get along, but you can't force them to fall in love and get married, however you can get two people to marry as part of a business contract -- there is artwork made strictly for money and then there is my favorite work, the art done for love.

 

This is the latest drawing I've completed.  Lady of the Fox's Fire, the year it's set in is the early 19th century round about Mary Shelley's time, and this lady is being guided by a spirit fox up a flight of stairs in a darkened house.

There's still a story evolving here and I hope my publisher forgives me for taking a little time off to show off this image.  I really want to do more work, show more work, and have that work be featured in a book you can buy in the stores right now, but I still have to finish everything.  I wish I could just print my ideas out of my head or something and skip all the work... and this leads me to whine. 

 

If only I could have the final results done RIGHT NOW.  My heart hurts with desire to share.  I feel this desperate desire for your attention, to hear your comments, to read what is in your eyes...  But I am going back home, back to the silence, back to the drawing board where all the magic happens in my little closed-off-space from the rest of the world where I am alone with all my characters dying alive for the chance to dance into your heads.  I don't want this creative process to be a solitary one.

It's my girlfriend's birthday today! We're going to celebrate it tomorrow at the Texas Renaissance Festival along with Myclette's birthday celebration there. She just turned 21, so she can now legally purchase alcoholic bevereges. Tomorrow, I'm going to try my best to make sure that she'll have a wonderful day tomorrow, one that she will never for get...
