Fishing With Jeffrey Dahmer
Last year, I went to Lake Lanier when the water was down due to drought. Washed up on shore were a number of fish skeletons. I decided to take home with me the spine of a Catfish. I wanted to preserve the bones as best I could and wanted to get rid of all the excess flesh and cartilage. Because fish bones are so delicate, you shouldn't use bleach when removing the flesh and whitening the bones. My only other option was to bury them and let the bugs do the work for me.

Just recently, I remembered that I had buried them and went to dig them up.The still were a bit dirty, but a nice soak in some water took care of that for me. I also sat down and scrapped some of the dirt of with a knife. They sat in a cup under my sink for a month or two while I tried to decide what to do with them. Today, I decided to recreate the spine.

I first had to drill needle thin holes into each individual disk. I thought for sure that they would collapse under the pressure of the drill, but thank God they didn't. I kind of felt like Jeffrey Dahmer with that drill. After I had drilled holes into all the disks, I threaded a piece of red string (the red representing the Catfish's blood) through the eye of the needle and then threaded the needle through all of the holes. It only took about 30 minutes and then I had a complete Catfish spin to hang on my wall.

(I don't have a picture of it, so this image that I found while searching Google Images will have to do.)

Watercolor Betta Mermaid Painting pt. 1

The first two images are a bit cloudy and dark because I didn't have a good bright light source to show the pencil drawings in detail, but it should give you an idea what direction I was going to work into...

I've been working, slowly, on a painting of a Betta Mermaid.  Here's how she's been coming into view:

The first color wash above.

Second color wash. The paper is still wet here.

Let dry, then I worked in more detail, including some color on the shell and foliage around the figure. Imagine that the Betta Mermaid is quite small. The shell is most likely from a snail. She holds onto it near the top of a tank or glass bowl.

A close up of the mermaid's face. Her personality is showing!

Another detailed close-up of the mermaid.

And here she gets her scales and fins detailed! I used wet on dry color for this part of the process.

Another close up. I like how the water reflected the light from the flash. It gave me an idea on how to bring out her eyes.
There will be more to come soon. The painting is developing beautifully!

Tropical Fish Tank
003.JPG hosted for free by ImageShack

This is the new fishtank we bought today.

We walked into a tropical fish store to look at the pretty fish...

and decided that we wanted to get a salt-water tank.

haha

so we bought a tank, we're going to get a filtration system and such soon.

then we'll get around to setting up the tank to make it livable for fish.

and don't worry, animal lovers.

we're doing our research, and we're going to take the very best care of these fish that we can!

we're planning on staining the stand black, as well.

it'll be prettier.
