I received an email from Conrad today. He seldom sends one now that he's 'too far' to be  online as often as he wishes. I understand that. Being friends need no constant words of affirmation. Its the deep understanding of one with another...

Conrad's one person who will stand up for you even if everyone cowers to do so. He will be with you--especially when he know you are right.

Several instances have proven this, back when we were struggling faculty in an exclusive school run by nuns. I remember him standing up and explaining my side when all others averted their heads to signify and  I alone have to defend my cause.. Good 'ole Conrad.

I saw his name on one of our local  papers  weeks ago. He was heralded by the DSWD for his extraordinary act -for a remote barrio where he is now based. And he did it -singlehandedly. Not a surprise.. expect Conrad to do things his way.  So I asked him the juicy details..

The story was more shocking and interesting than the honor he reaped.. really Conrad you are a hero!

This is how he said it: (not verbatim but i am trying to relate his story )

" When I finally  left the "nunnery" a couple of years ago, (the exclusive school) I transferred to the public school system- hah, the shock of my life! Such intrigue and red-tapes! Poor public school teachers! Really, these slaves are just an notch higher than paupers! Geez.. and because I was loud mouthed, I was transferred to this remote province (in Mindanao) where children still ride horses or walk six kilometers to reach the two-room nipa hut called school! Such rut! And to think department officers wallow and wantonly shop  in peoples tax eh?

It was in my sixth month when I finally began to settle down and accept my fate to do whatever there is to do in this forsaken far place-- while they chose a newbie to handle the subject I applied for in the public science school.

Information started trickling in. A case.. then another.. then another.. goodness. This town has more rape cases than the metro!  why so many rapists and pedos!! I did my own research.. this is abnormal since I knew more unreported cases are happening. I contacted the Barrio  Capitan  and he himself is mum about it. Where else could I get reliable infos than the sources themselves.. students who were victims! I was horrified to find out that close to 40% of my students suffer this fate! Whether it's done by friends, neighbors, relatives or even family members....And they are powerless to do anything!. Digging deeper, the root of it all is the video-cum cinema bunk run by a resident barangay councilman!He regularly runs XXXXXXXX films!!! Filthy scum!  Dadang (my lone,  co-teacher) warned me not to be too much involved since it is a very sensitive issue .. darn! Well.. it took guts and patience but my information and statistics  submitted to the DWSD did the trick. They came in and continued the case and the final clean up. Of course they had  most of the  accolade but doesnt matter. I'm glad this horrible case is through. "

Though the case was already closed, families and children have to cope and go on with life. Some scarred, some battered but the worst was over.(I hope)

 During the Case, Conrad has to go through all the threats and even one time has to go home   blue and black because some paid thugs beat him up. He's some hardy pup. And his change will forever be recognized by families and children in this community. He said their earnest smiles, and waves as he passes by their houses is more than enough remuneration.
