Eragon @ MindSay

I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!!
Yes, I did yell the above out of a window after seeing the Eragon movie. As one critic said:

"If you took all the dragon-centered movies ever made, and counted the good ones on your fingers, I bet you'd still have enough fingers left over to flip off "Eragon" as you walked laughing from the theater."

Never before have I been so DISGUSTED with a movie in my entire life.

You see, there are forgivable movie mistakes. Making Arya blond (when it is explictly stated MANY times that her hair is raven black), or even having Saphira name herself are forgivable errors. When you change the entire plot around or cut out MAJOR characters that have great importance in the next book...those are unforgivable movie mistakes.

Let's start with the plot, shall we?

Eragon, after tracking a deer in The Spine for a few days, discover's Saphira's egg. Sloan the butcher refuses to accept it as payment for meat, seeing as it came from The Spine, a place which he fears greatly. Rather, Horst, another villager pays for the meat. No one knows the true value of the stone, so Eragon and his family waits for the traders to come to Carvahall. When the traders do come, they don't know the price of the stone either. Eragon catches his cousin, Roran, kissing Sloan's daughter, Katrina.
The stone which Eragon found hatches and he finds out that he has actually had a dragon's egg. He names her Saphira, which was a dragon's name mentioned by Brom, the storyteller. Roran later leaves the farm to take a job in Therinsford to earn money so he can marry Katrina. Saphira grows over time, and one day, the Ra'zac, bird-like monsters come to Carvahall. Saphira is frightened and kidnaps Eragon to The Spine. He convinces her to turn around, but when he does go back to Carvahall, he finds his home burned down and Garrow tortured and badly wounded. Garrow dies shortly after, and Eragon vows to avenge his death and track down the Ra'zac. Brom joins Eragon, who also knew about Saphira and gives him Zar'roc, a rider's sword. He does not say how he got it.
Eragon learns much about magic and fighting from Brom on their journey pursuing the Ra'zac. They eventually lose the Ra'zac's tale and end up in Terim, where an old friend of Brom's, Joed, lives. In Terim, Eragon encounters the herbalist Angela and her werecat, Solembum. Angela tells him his future, saying many paths face him now, he will have an execptionally long life, have an epic romance, a betrayal from someone in his family and will someday leave Algaesia, never to return. Her werecat also gives him strange advice.
Brom, Eragon and Saphira eventually leave Terim to go to Dras-Leona in the hopes of finding the Ra'zac. Over the course of this journey, Eragon is having dreams about a strange, raven-haired woman imprisoned somewhere. Brom finally reveals that he is a member of the Varden, or the rebel group and explains how Saphira's egg came to Eragon. Near Dras-Leona, Eragon, Saphira and Brom encounter the Ra'zac. The Ra'zac mortally wound Brom and he dies the following night. They meet a man name Murtagh, who has been tracking the Ra'zac as well. With his final words, Brom tells Eragon that he was once a dragon rider and his dragon was named Saphira. Eragon buries Brom, and Saphira turns the tomb to diamond.
Eragon and Saphira decide to join the Varden, but Eragon is captured in the city of Gil'ead and brought to the shade Durza. They escape with Murtagh's help, also rescuing an elf named Arya in a comatose state--the samw woman Eragon has been dreaming about. Eragon and Murtagh become good friends.
With her mind, Arya explains how she was carrying the egg stolen from Galbatorix between the elves and the Varden in hopes that it might hatch and how she was ambushed and captured on her last trip by Durza. Arya is now seriously wounded and needs to get to the Varden quickly. She shows Eragon how to get to the Varden using mental images, and a huge chase ensues. Murtagh, who didn't want to go to the Varden, is forced to tell Eragon that his is Morzan's son, the first of the Forsworn. Eragon also learns that Zar'roc once belonged to Morzan.
As the chase gets desperate, the party is rescued by the Varden who are inhabiting Farthen Dur, a hollow mountain as well as the Dwarves capital, Trojenheim. Eragon meets the leader of the Varden, Ajihad, while Murtagh is imprisoned. Eragon also meets the dwarf king Hrothgar, Ajihad's daughter Nasuda, is tested by The Twins (two nasty, bald magicians who serve the Varden), encounters Angela and Solembum again, and blesses one of the babies in the Varden.
It is discovered that urgals are entering Trojenheim through the dwarf tunnels. Eragon and Saphira get separated, and Eragon is forced to fight Durza alone. He is quickly defeated in the battle, and is slashed on his back from shoulder to hip. At that moment, Saphira with Arya on her back break the Star Sapphire, the roof of the chamber. This distracts Durza long enough for Eragon to stab the Shade through the heart. With Durza's spell now broken, the Urgals retreat. Eragon is unconscious after his battle with Durza, and is mentally contacted by someone who calls himself Togira Ikonoka, or The Cripple Who Is Whole. When Eragon awakes, he finds that he still has a scar and realizes that he only killed Durza due to lucky circumstances. He realizes that he is in desperate need of training and will go to find Togira Ikonoka.

Okay, after reading all that, you realize there has to be some cutting made in a movie. You expect cutting.  Take Lord of the Rings for instance. Tom Bombadil was an AWESOME character, but he was cut out of the films. What you don't expect is for the film to cut out major plot points, or even switch the whole plot around.

Eragon Movie Plot:
Saphira's egg is magically teleported to Eragon, who finds it and it hatches in a few days.
Roran leaves home to avoid being recruited.
Saphira flies for the first time, goes *POOF* and is suddenly full grown. (Wtf??)
The Ra'zac come to Carvahall. Saphira tries to take Eragon to The Spine, but he makes her drop him. Eragon finds Garrow dead. Brom enters the house and burns it down.
Brom and Eragon rush to the Varden.
Eragon uses magic for the first time.
Brom and Eragon rush to the Varden.
Eragon has a dream, acts like a spoiled brat and makes them go to save Arya.
Brom gets killed. Murtagh appears. Yay Murtagh!
Arya is awake and with Eragon as Brom dies. Eragon bury him, Saphira makes the diamond tomb.
A two month trek across the desert is covered in about 10 minutes, if that. Murtagh is eager to lead them to the Varden.
Eragon and Durza fight. Saphira nearly gets killed. But they win. Yay.
Arya sets out to return to Ellesmera. Eragon says good bye.

Also note that Eragon seems to be given to fits of queer prose in the movie. When in the book did he yell something as silly as "To the sky to fight or die!"
Gaaaay.

Now I get to rant about the characters.
Galbatorix did not appear ONCE in the book.
Murtagh didn't want to go to the Varden at all. Why is he suddenly so eager to lead Eragon & Co. there?
Why does Murtagh only have about 5 lines? HE'S REALLY FLIPPIN' IMPORTANT!!
Katrina, Solembum, Horst, The Twins, Joed, Elva (the child Eragon blessed), and Orik all play huge roles in Eldest. They were never introuduced in the movie.
Ajihad is important, and Nasuda even more so. Give them more than 2 lines!!

Other mistakes:
If a Rider dies, his Dragon will not die. They are EQUALS, a major theme in Eldest.
Romantically, Arya wouldn't give Eragon a minute of her time.
Dwarves and Elves weren't mentioned at all. How were you to know that Arya is an elf at all? Her ears weren't even pointy.
Eragon could use the healing spell. He even used it on Arya.
Urgals are supposed to be monsters with huge horns, not dudes who haven't showered for a week. In that case, my ex-boyfriend could be an urgal.
The entire plot.
In the scene where Brom dies, Eragon tries to cure him, but fails because he's not strong enough yet. You can't call back magic; Eragon should have died.
Brom dies fighting the Ra'zac, not Durza.
Arya is comatose for the majority of the book.
Eragon has brown hair and brown eyes, Arya has raven black hair, as is stated about 20 times in each chapter.
Roran leaves so he can marry Katrina, not to be a draft dodger.
Galbatorix does NOT appear at all in the first book.
In the final battle, Saphira is not wounded.
Durza, in the final battle, summons a dragon. The only dragon to appear in the book is Saphira. Durza is also a Shade, and only Humans or Elves can become Dragon Riders.
ERAGON IS NOT GIVEN TO FITS OF RANDOM PROSE! Ed Speelers is a total puff of course.
Eragon and Arya don't hook up in the first book, or even in the second.
The Ra'zac are supposed to be bird-like, not mummy-maggot like.
There's no *POOF* and Saphira suddenly grows up. She grows over a period of time.
The first time Saphira breathes fire is when she and Arya break the Star Sapphire.
Murtagh's scar is on his back, not his stomach.
Murtagh's backstory was revealed way too quickly.
Boy, that was a quick trip to the Varden.
You know that spell where Eragon can have Saphira's vision? There's no such spell.
When Eragon does see the world through Saphira's eyes, it's suppposed to mostly blue, not orange.
It's never mentioned that Galbatorix's first dragon was killed, and he stole one from another Rider. This is one of the things that makes him so evil.
If you have any others to add, feel free to tell me.

Silly plotholes:
How the hell did Brom get to Durza's castle so quick? Can he teleport magically or something?
Arya is an elf. She could have cured Brom.
Speaking of teleporting, I think everyone in this story could teleport. Eragon flies a million miles away, and poof, suddenly Broms' there too? These guys really love the poofy thing.

Howver, let us take a moment to consider the good things about the film.
Saphira was cute as a baby, and I thought she had a good VA.
Murtagh was also cute. (*sob* Poor Murtagh...)

Movies, books
They will show Supernatural this fall. I have read in journals that it is supposed to be good but after what I read about it on text tv I am not sure. Is it really the show for me? I hope so.

Have to start reading Wolfskin by Marillier soon. I hope I don't have to wait forever for Son of the Shadows *sighs* hurry up book store!

Watched Runaway Jury this past weekend. I just love Cusack, he makes me swoon. The movies they make of Grisham's books are not always that good but this one was.

Soon I will buy the extended version of Kingdom of Heaven, nothing like a good battle ;)

Borrowed and read Eragon by Christoper Paolini, it was so easy to read so I finished it that day. Nice cute book, I do want to know if I am right in what I think....

Started watching this Russian soap, all women and men are just idiots. Come on you don't start a fight with the crown prince *sighs* At least one guy is cute and I want to see what happens. Nothing else is on and when I have to read the Finnish text then that is good practice. Also 1839 was a good year, those buildings are so beautiful.

my book review

i have been talking alot of drama lately so i decided to tell you about a few books i have recently read in my time in this foster home that are worth reading. the first is a two-book seris that i am sure you have heard of. i am talking, of course about Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code both by Dan Brown. angels and demons is a great thriller with plenty of twists and turns. it is also very educational, even by my standards. most of the book takes place in rome as Robert Langdon and Vittoria Vetra battle against time to uncover the clues and save the vatican city! i give it 4 and a half stars,(out of five). the da vinci code is the second book in the seris so you should definately read angels and demons first. many people will disagree but i think that the da vinci code is a close second to angels and demons. the da vinci code is a good thriller that would appeal to a conspiracy theorist looking for a topic to ponder. this book takes place in two major european cities. after robert langdon is framed for the murder of a famous french curator, he and his new companion sophie neveu, must de-sipher clues that may prove roberts innocence, but more importantly, the possible whereabouts of the holy grail!!! like i said before it wasnt as good as angels and demons but i still give it 4 stars. my last book review is not of the same genre. i have only read the first of the innheritance trilogy, but it was enough to get me hooked. book number one is called Eragon, writen by the mere 15 year old Chrisopher paolini. i was never a big fantasy fan, aside from harry potter, but this book brings with it a whole new world complete with a map in the back of the book. when Eragon finds a smooth blue stone on one of his hunting trips, he merely tries to sell it for meat to get him and his family through the winter, but when a dragon emerges from the stone, eragons world is turned upside down as he is sent on a quest that involves many creatures and charactors. i loved this book and will give it 4 and a half stars also. well thats all i have for now, but i really encourage you all to read these books. if you have read any of them i would love to hear your take on them, or any other books you may recomend. until then...

peace peace

Brian
