Plus it keeps me entertained! he he! ;)

With loads of love, ...from the garden, I'm sure most, like myself and the birds in the garden, are happy to see winter loosening it's grip on the Northern Hemisphere!

Spring is just around the corner

The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.

There's no doubt about it now - Spring is here to stay!
It's now official; It's Spring In The Garden!

My Poppies are emerging through the snow!

The strawberry beds were well mulched last fall and are already starting to rise up for a new season! We'll keep them protected a little longer just to ensure we don't get any damage from a freak ice storm - not unusual in this area! Could be picking as early as late May depending on how the weather goes or mid June at the latest! YUM!

Here a daffodil has pushed it's way through the cold soil, looking for the warmth of the sun.

One of our garden visitors.
A morning dove was perched in the tree above me enjoying the warm sunshine and watched calmly as I took a few photographs in the garden!

Watching the morning dove enjoying the sunshine and beautiful blue skies brought back lovely thoughts of my own... Visions of playing, lounging and dining in the garden, enjoying all spring has to offer!
Ah-h-h-h! Now that feels better!

It's supposed to rain for a couple of days, with that the balance of the snow still hanging around should disappear and serious gardening AND garden lounging can start anew!

Hope you're enjoying your first day of spring!
(...or fall - depending on where you are in the world!)

Happy Equinox! Balance is the Key!
Improved Tulips View
This photograph is offered in honour of the Equinox and Nature and in hopes for a beautiful spring in the Northern Hemisphere, a bountiful harvest in the Southern Hemisphere and balance in our fair world!

Here we are at the Equinox, a time of balance between the day and night. It's a perfect time to pause and reflect; to find balance in your own experience.

In the Northern Hemisphere it is the time of birthing and creation. What are you birthing? What are the seeds you plant as the creator in your life? What magic will you create in this fresh new season? What great new understanding will you reach?

No matter what those answers might be, simply honour that their potential is real and that your capacity to create is unbounded! Take this thought with you as you cruise through a glorious spring and find wings on the feet of your heart's desires!

I love the springtime! And I find myself rejuvenated with the rememberance of what spring means to me and the excitement and joy it brings to bear in my life.

Spring in Ontario brings unsettled and changeable weather in a normal year! Things are harder to predict with the changing weather patterns of a warming earth in concert with spring weather changes. This is a challenge for any gardener!

While it's still too early to do a lot of work in the garden at this time of year, it is time to start plants indoors for planting out when the outside temperatures remain steadily above freezing, even at night.  Not everyone has a greenhouse available and for many, purchasing plants from local nurseries is the most efficient way to go. Personally, I start some and I purchase some others. In particular; I purchase those plants I might've started that didn't grow well, plus anything too tender or difficult to grow from seed by myself.  (I've had trouble starting green and red bell peppers, though I still try each year!)

One activity that can be accomplished on days when the ground is soft, but not wet, and the temperatures are above freezing; weeding and transplanting! If you know what you're looking for you can remove dandelions and plaintain from your lawn and garden with ease when they're just barely out of dormancy. Their roots won't hold as tightly and are less likely to snap off. Use a small hand fork to loosen the soil around the plant and lift out, getting as much of the plants' root as you can. Toss in your compost pile or bag it up for garbage collection.

Here's a photograph of small dandelion plantlets that will explode
into large plants quickly once spring gets rolling;

Dandelions

And, if you're so inclined, dandelion greens picked this time of year, can be added to salads for a boost to your immune system! Please! Be sure the dandelions you pick haven't been treated with chemicals!!!!! Chemically treated dandelions are probably more dangerous to eat than the benefit you'd get from their detoxifying properties! If you're unsure, DON'T DO IT!

Dandelion contains nutrients thought to help detoxify the blood and are one of the very first greens available this time of year. Surely it's loaded with vitamins A and D and likely C as well! It's a ritual I follow evey spring - dandelion salad, and is something I look forward to, knowing that soon, other tastier greens will be ready to munch soon!

Other prizes you may find mixed in your lawns and borders; volunteer plants! These little sweeties were planted by seeds dropping off plants close by or by way of droppings from birds that visited your garden last year. Many plants arrive this way and sometimes what has arrived is a plant worth keeping, maybe even transplanting to a more appropriate location.

One example of "volunteer plants", Forget Me Nots follow;

  Baby Forget me not

And below, a shot of a large clump of Forget Me Nots that will need to be thinned out and transplanted so they are distributed through the garden more evenly;

  Forget me nots

Though their colourful show is short-lived, Forget me nots add a beautiful low border to a late spring garden bed and can be pulled out as soon as the flowers are finished allowing other plants to fill in behind them.

I'll feature more plants in a day or two, at least till we cover most of the common good and bad little plants starting to grow here in our enchanted garden.

the balancing dance

the balancing dance

the equinox approaches and the earth reaches a time of balance in light

the northern hemispere will begin to see the days become shorter

as my friends in the southern hemisphere begin to see longer days

still in a balance, yet it is a different dance and we'll continue through

to yet aother equinox when the opposite occurs, still in balance

still in step with a rhythm eons old, a rhythm we just KNOW

in a dance of all humanity with the earth and stars as our partners

a dance that spans creation and gives each a part to play

a dance that fills my heart with joy and my life with the seasons

a dance that I can choose to actively participate in

a dance we can enhance with our own magic and creativity

and that is how we each help to keep step with our earth

by adding our own essence of ourselves to the tapestry

of this fabulous ever changing creation we call life on earth

and each time we learn to step that much lighter and with love

when we learn that we are all integral parts of an incredible whole

we move that much closer to see the creation of our own heaven on earth
