Saving The World

Happy Earth Day!

I know, you're all expecting a blog about the history of Earth Day and its deeper meaning. Sorry to disappoint. I'm not going there this year. Maybe next year.

Today we're going to talk about something a little different, courtesy of my friend, Meg, who you can find over at Meg's Single Step. She recently put up an awesome post about the 3/50 Project, and in light of the pseudo-holiday, I thought this was a great time for me to blatantly poach from her blog.

The 3/50 project is  a community approach to improving the economy. With these hard times, the people who are hit the hardest are the small independent stores, rather than the giant retailers. Let's face it folks, Wal-Mart ain't going anywhere, but your neighborhood shops might be. The project simply asks retail shoppers to spend $50 a month at any three of their favorite independent shops. To be clear: that is $50 TOTAL, not each. How you break it up is completely your own doing. So, maybe instead of hitting Hallmark to buy birthday cards, you get your stash at a local craft store. Another idea? Well, I know my dad always gets his beer at an independent liquor store, no MGM superstore for him. How about picking up some fresh fruits and veggies at the farmer's market this summer, rather than at the chain grocers?

There are lots of easy ways that people can participate to help save small stores. I am just about putting it on your radar so that it is something you think of when you're out retailing. Be sure and read the link to the 3/50 Project, they give some great facts about how much better you'll be spending your money by supporting independents.

Save the economy-seems like a good concept for Earth Day, hmm? And now my work here is done, my good deed for the day is complete.

36 days.

Earth Day

Spring has finally hit the Adirondacks :)

I want to wish everyone a very happy earth day! If you can't tell, I am in love with nature, sorry to shock some of you lol. Going to an envionmental sustainably geared college has really opened my eyes to our world today. It makes me sad to think of people who groan about hearing words like global warming, sustainability, and earth day. It amazes me sometimes how ignorant people can be even though the environment is what sustains us. If we continue to screw it up there goes mankind and life on earth as we know it. Then again on the other side are extreme radicalists that see people as evil and how dare we cut down trees and hunt animals. To be honest, without some of those "horrible" practices we would have overpopulations of certain species which could destroy the environment so many of us have worked to protect. I know there are people in between because I am one of them. It's interesting to look outside of my college especially people who aren't making their career out of the environment and wildlife. What do other people do during earth day? Did you even know it was earth day? Well either way I hope everyone has a happy earth day and takes a few seconds to just pick up some trash or recycle. Trust me, it makes a difference! :)

Well I'm not going to wast anymore time blogging away. There's a song sparrow calling outside my window :)

Earth Day
Last few days have been busy ones.  Let me break down the good and bad news:

1.  My pal, Miya, gave birth to twin girls Monday afternoon!  I hope she's doing well.  That was hard work carrying those babies, girl.

2.  My mother's 66th birthday was yesterday.  Family time made more special because it's...

3.  Earth Day!  Spent the entire day with my younger brother with whom I seem to argue with 24/7 to the amusement of everyone, including ourselves.  We couldn't even agree on what movie to see yesterday.  Went to see "The Forbidden Kingdom" by default decision (it was the only movie both of us weren't emotionally invested in) and it was pleasant, but not original, it's the same ol' Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz situation 'cept this time around it's about a 21st century American teenage boy in the land of ancient China.  *yawns*

4.  Earth Day is also my friend's store's anniversary.  In celebration Dala has a 20% everything in the store sale. Go visit her store on Myspace!

5.  My oldest uncle, Joe, died some time last week.  Now I know why I've heard his voice lately.  This is the second relative of mine to die in less than a year.  It has my mother panicked.

6.  I may have a bladder infection.  I do not look forward to getting poked by doctors, but I must endure.

Happy Earth Day!
Well Earth Days almost over, I feel good, I didn't drive to work, or even go to work, instead I worked from home, and my employer was cool with it. :)
Man we should have earth Day more often!

Just doing my duty. Heh. Duty.
For Earth Day, I'm buying these:

Photobucket

(And yes, I realize they are dog waste bags, but I'm going to use them when cleaning out the cats' litter boxes. Same purpose.) I'm also going to try to find some biodegradable tall kitchen bags that aren't ridiculously expensive, and switch out my current lightbulbs for the more energy-efficient ones.

For Election Day, I'm going out at 2:00ish to vote with the hope that I'll have missed most of the lunch crowd.

Also, random note, but it always amuses me when people meow at my cats when I have the balcony door open. I'll hear someone step up to the front door and then hear a "mrow" before the door opens. People are silly.

=D

iFeel: Photobucket awake
iTunes: "Sister, Sister" on TV
