Drumline @ MindSay
as we approach the halfway point, she gets up to go to the bathroom, insisting she'll be back to watch a "another half hour." she of course winds up watching the entire thing, having a grand time laughing at several hilarious moments (sandra bullock and ryan reynolds's characters running into each other completely naked, etc.), while jillian glaringly shot looks over, occasionally with a shushing reminder that one of their roommates was sleeping—kind of struck me odd, being that it's a friday and all, and that girl's a sorority girl, but w/e.
saturday is the georgia tech game where we get behind and never come back, managing only three field goals, and losing with a final score of 34-9. it also rains/pours about the entire game, which was great, too—and to top it all off, i somehow forgot my actual camera, missing the chance to record the only halftime show the band has ever played while in raincoats (though the rain did stop for the entire halftime, fortunately).
on my way back to fredericksburg after the game, i give jennelle a call, and then call kenny, and we wind up having dinner at the restaurant, evan joining us. on our way to jennelle's car, we encounter some guy down by the fasmart, who sounds like he's manhandling some girl who's yelling for him to let her go, etc. the three of us guys walk over, as a black guy in a 300 who was getting gas also pulls up to see what's going on. evan calls 911 to report the incident, as the girl goes and walks off in the other direction with some guy we'd seen passing by the restaurant window earlier. the guy in the yukon accuses the other of being a drug dealer, and speeds off before the police arrive. evan and kenny go around the corner to see if the couple is still there, and to finish giving their report, as jennelle and i wait in the car. finally rejoining us, evan tells us a bit about the laws for concealed carry as we head to barnes & noble for a bit, and then cheeseburger in paradise, which had a live cover band. i pass on drinks, as i still have my burnett's.
we finally wind up heading to jennelle's, kenny and evan crack open a few beers while i mix my watermelon with ginger ale, and we wind up watching revenge of the fallen, i think, but jennelle heads to bed early, and soon enough i'm the last one still awake, so i turn the tv and lights off and try to get comfortable on the oversized one-seater..and wind up forgetting my orange jacket that i'd left on the back of the couch to dry.
sunday was the usual mass and back home, before heading back up to charlottesville kind of late.
You know what movie I haven't seen in too long? Drumline. That's right, the classic teen-ish-college drummer angst film of the decade. I need some hardcore drum corps rhythms mixed a semi-believable plot-line and moderate (at best) acting!
What inspires this, you ask? I stumbled into my collection of drum corps stuff from DCI (Blue Devils, Santa Clara Vanguard, Colts...) and I was tappin' my foot (and groovin', I'll admit it), to the ratta-tata-tata-tat... shbam ticka-tat-ticka-bam-ticka-tat-tick-tick-tat-tat-tattatatatata-ta tick- shbam bam crash... beat, thinkin' "I need to see that movie again"... I first saw it in a crappy-ass theatre with the lead percussionist of the Pep band, which was an awesome experience, and then never again... sad! so... I have my mission.
Well it's been a busy couple of days! Yesterday was the big Otterbein vs. Capital game. For those who don't know, Capital is our rival school. We haven't beaten them (or anybody else, really) for some time now. But yesterday, in a surprising turn of events in the fourth quarter, we came back to beat them 17-14. Very excellent. Things went fairly well for the band too. In my mind, this was really the first performance, and it had the confusion and difficulties that you would expect from the first game of the season. All in all, though, everything went pretty smoothly. Next Saturday we go to the Licking County Festival of Bands. Fun.
Yesterday was also my younger brother's 16th birthday. We (Mom, Dad, Kyle, Ashley and I) went out to Pizza Hut after the game and had a good time. It was nice to have the family here; this was the first time they got to see my dorm for this year, etc. They also brought me some stuff I really needed as I start this job...
...which easily leads me into today! This morning, Ashley and I went to New Albany for church. It was the first time I had actually been to a service there. Interesting, since I start working there tomorrow and I had never been to church. But in any case, we went today, and the service was really cool! It was nice to hear the pastor preach. She has a very relaxing voice and her sermon was really good this morning. I can't wait to work there, which is a good thing, because I have a worship planning meeting tomorrow night that will constitute my first official duty for the church. Yay!
One more thing I want to mention about the weekend in general: I love Ashley Woodard! Seriously, this girl is amazing!
Well, it's official. I have made my return to Mindsay. I must say, it's quite good to be back! I have sincerely missed writing, reading, and commenting. It's very good to know that the connection is alive and well and that I can now be a regular contributer to this amazing community once again. Several brief updates from myself:
Band camp is over. Regular rehearsals start Tuesday (Monday if you count our drumline sectional). The band is good this year. The drumline is really good. It's going to be a very good year. That's exciting, considering that I don't normally really enjoy marching band. The great friends certainly don't hurt anything.
Brandon, Chris and I played in Chillicothe last night at Rockin' Fish. One of the smallest crowds we've ever played to, yet one of the most powerful experiences on stage, at least for me. The spirit just moves in that place. It's amazing.
Ashley moved in today. That makes me really happy. I've really been missing her since I've been here for camp. We went to see "March of the Penguins" tonight. It was a really good movie. Certainly not your typical date movie, but an amazing film. Then we came back and hung out here. It was wonderful to see her again.
(Side Note:) I haven't had dinner in two nights. Unusual.
I'm finally completely moved in at my dorm. It finally feels like home. And, on top of that, the computer's playing great music tonight. Good deal.
Tomorrow is my audition at New Albany UMC. I'm nervous. Everybody says I shouldn't be, but I can't help it. I just want everything to go smoothly. I really want that job.
And on that note... I should get some sleep so that I will be ready for said audition in the morning. Goodnight.
