Dimmu Borgir @ MindSay
Listening to : Black Sabbath
Okay- so life has been extremely good the past few weeks.
I've met the most awesome guy ever and I'm enjoying all the little, cute things people enjoy when they just start off with a relationship- like the constant messages and butterfly-inducing kisses and all that stuff! He plays for a heavy metal band and works in a video store- thats all he does??! And it doesn't bother me- because for some or other reason- his lack of ambition turns me on. It could probably be because I'm used to dating all these really ambitious guys.. I mean- you have to vary your taste sometimes don't you?
We got together over Easter-weekend- there was a party at his house- and although I've known him for quite a while, I only realized the chemistry between us was ridiculously high when we started pouring the vodka.. why does vodka always do weird things to you? But it's cool- I love talking to this guy. Thats like all we do.We go to Zeplins and headbang ourselves into a stupor on Pantera or Dimmu Borgir or we watch stupid episodes of Metalocalypse at his house. It seriously is so simple- but yet so great!!
I have to start revising for my exams which are coming up in a month.. I'm already stressing. I just can't seem to concentrate for more than 2 seconds at once. My mind is just one huge whirlwind.
I have to leave now, need to go for driving lessons (yes, I got my learner's permit!). So Im driving up and down in our neighbourhood's main street, trying to alternate my co-ordination between the clutch and the gas.. I'm all hard-core!!
Cheers.
First up, the new Dimmu Borgir album In Sorte Diaboli (I can feel Mike's eyes rolling as I type this). Anyway, I had read some recent writings on this album stating that it was a pretty big departure from their previous work so admittedly, I was a bit reticent but still fairly optimistic that I'd be blown away again. The album is a concept piece this time around but of course, it is fairly Satanic in theme. Anyway, I have yet to make it through the entire album but the 4-5 songs I've heard so far are simply amazing. If there is a departure at all, it would be as follows:
- The drum sound is HHUUGGEE!!! My complaint on Spiritual Black Dimensions was the thin drum sound. In Sorte Diaboli has a mammoth drum sound but everything is crystal. Basically, the low end sounds like the drums of Viking war but every nuance and in-between high-hat knicking is there for the appreciating. And let me tell you, this is some of most technical and finite drumming that the Borgir has EVER concocted. Just nipple-twisting and spectacular.
- Musically, progressive is a only term to be used here. Time changes, huge sweeping rhythms, intricate dual guitar niftiness...this album provides the goods.
Next up, Porcupine Tree's latest slabular entitled Fear Of A Blank Planet. Six songs....sheer brilliance. The first things that jumped out at me here so far are the more complicated and beauteous arrangements, the contrasting moments of guitar stabbings that are as heavy as anything out there and the complex and superb drumwork. For me, Porcupine Tree has always had standout percussion but here, Gavin Harrison outdoes himself. Having Alex Lifeson or Rush and Robert Fripp of King Crimson on board for guest spots does not hurt one bit either. This will be in my year-end top 10......bet on it.
Lastly, Black Flag My War. If you need to ask, you pose for life.
While on the Black Flag tip, I just got Season 1 of The Henry Rollins Show on DVD. Overall, it's a pretty rad show with some standout musical guests, even when they aren't my cup of tea. Seeing Dinosaur Jr. perform "Forget The Swan" live just reminded me that I need their new album next Tuesday. I'm so glad they are back together.
OMG I've been living under a rock......let us thank supposedly Al Gore (haha) for the internet! Dimmu Borgir is awesome!!!
Today was a long boring day.....but tomorrow I'm not working so I'm thinking about bugging Julie tomorrow if she's not working....hah and not moving. She's living in a hotel in Lexington cuz the house is being foreclosed or something.
I get to pick up Phylicia's shifts for a month and a half because she's going to Honduras with her boyfriend. I tell you everyone in fricken Salisbury's significant other is hispanic. Hah it's really weird....and all of these 20 somethings are married or pregnant. Can you spell divorce? Hah all I can say is I gotta get out of here cuz I'm not about to be poppin' out babies.
Well, more later.
