My Journey towards Health

In less than six months time, I will be starting my third year as a diagnoised Type II Diabetic.  I really never had a chance come to think of it.  My maternal Grandfather died 7 years before I was born due to alcholic related Type II diabeties complications.  My own mother was gestional diabetic when she carried at least my brother and myself.  One of my materinal uncles is a Type II Diabetic and my sister was gestional diabetic with both her children.  After the over the phone via mother diagnoises and I rushed to the doctor with a fasting sugar of 280 and was diagnoised with Type II Diabetes, it finally came out with all my varying medical problems while pregnant I too was most likely a gestional diabetic and nobody caught it with the fastings or the sugar testings done to pregnant women.  At first I was highly upset that due to varying unknown medical complications all my doctors insisted I had my tubes tied at the age of 22 and recently finding out if they would have diagnoised me correctly from the start, I could have gone on to have my wish of four children.  Then I mellowed out and remembered I HATED being pregnant:D  And I am very happy and blessed with my two children.

Through these last two and half years, I have ranged from a very die hard diabetic paitent to a very lax diabetic paitent.  When a person has an uncurable chronic can live with an entire life time illness, one gets highly tired of all the regulations and testing that they have to do day in and day out to maintain a normal functioning life.

Currently I am what my RN Mommy who works the diabetic clinics and the Reservation Public School checks for diabetic chidlren calls a lukewarm diabetic paitent.  I actually monitor what I eat for the most part.  I get a lot of exersies compared to the majority of diabetics in our area receive and I am willing to cut bad habits from my day to day life.  Much to her dismay, cursing is not a habit I have yet to break:P:D  Sorry featherdawn

The goal for this year was to loose the last 40 lbs I need to get back to my highschool graduation weight.  I have hit stale mate after stale mate.  Either time, family, or my own body has tried to prevent me from becoming healthier.  I am very slowly making progress.  I am loosing inches vs weight.  And I know in my body's case I will continue to loose inches for a few more weeks to months before my metablizim catches up and starts burning full on fat to loose the weight.  Simply because at 5'5", I am average height for a woman but I am not small boned.  I am medium boned with heavy muscle mass.  It is an advantage when people are attempting to guess my weight!  They usually guess 15-30 lbs under what I actually weight:D

I still have about three and half months left to get some more weight off.  I refuse to weigh myself until I can physically see myself not only loosing inches but fat deposits that will lead to weight loose.  And even then, I will still weigh heavier then I look due to the excessive loose skin I am starting to see through my abdomine, hips, and now more recently my arms.

So far, I have readded a daily exersise of either walkign or eliptical machine.  I have learned not to get bent out of shape if I miss a day or even up to a week or more exersising.  A part time single stay home mom, I do not get a lot of time to exersise.  Then I added a college class to the mix.  On top of my TKD and walking/eliptical, I virtually cut soda out of my diet completely.  Very rarely is it in the hosue and when it is I treat myself.  If we go out for dinner, I order water or ice tea.  And just in the last month, I have cut coffee completely out of my morning routine.  Yes I still drink hot teas in the morning and some do have caffine in them but not in the same degree that coffee has.

I have continued to research possible cleansing diets and between my lovely friends, atticsmouse and Teri, I have found a possible cleanse alternative.  When things settle down in my life I will give what they suggested a chance.  Plus why I think it will work for me is I don't have to stop eating and cause my sugars to go wonky!  Between what my food person says and what torridgirl posted, I have done research on avocadoes, and thanks to my girl Teri who was the initial guine pig for me, I am giong to attempt to add a half to a whole avocado to my diet daily for at least a month to start.  Avocadoes have been found to increase a person's metabolism rate and give an over all jump start on using your body's stored fat deposits!  We may eat like we are hunters and gathers but we sure do NOT have that life style anymore.  I have no need for all this stored belly fat!

In my next few days to weeks postings, I will also be giving periodical updates on my next habit I am attempting to break.............yet again.  Smoking.  Before we moved home, I was down to 3 cigs a day and I did well with my routine of smoking only on the hour for the first few days to a week and then moving the time between cigs further back until I am completely broke of cigs.  I don't care about the money.  I really dont' have a spendy habit when I smoke Tribal Smokes:P:D  But if I stop smoking, I have an arguement against my kids if they should start, I'll breath better, and I'll keep a lil more money in my pocket.  Even though we all know once I quit smoking, I'll end up dying some tragic death NOT caused by smoking anyway!  Oh yay!  I forgot, we all live to die in the first place so it really doesn't matter!:P:D

Well that is it for now.  Wish me luck on eating advocatoes and my attempt to stop smoking!

HUGE hospital scare with me todAY
So probably as none of you know I am a type 2 diabetic.
Well that means that instead of shots I take a little pill
4 times a day and watch what I eat.

Well today I nearly went into comatose, my blood sugar
was very very very very very high.. I think it was like
in the 700's and normal is 80-110.

So I went into convulsions at work and they had to call
the ambulance.

Ugh

I am much better now. I will have all of my lab results in
by tomorrow on how my tests came out.

Diabetics: Dayumed if we eat Sugar and Dayumed if we eat Fake Sugar!

Artificial sweetener linked to weight gain

Rats fed food with saccharin added more body fat, researchers found

WASHINGTON - Using an artificial, no-calorie sweetener rather than sugar may make it tougher, not easier, to lose weight, U.S. researchers said Sunday.

Scientists at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, studied rats that were fed food with the artificial sweetener saccharin and rats fed food with glucose, a natural sugar.

In comparison to rats given yogurt sweetened with glucose, those that ate yogurt sweetened with saccharin went on to consume more calories and put on more weight and body fat.

The researchers said sweet foods may prompt the body to get ready to take in a lot of calories, but when sweetness in the form of artificial sweeteners is not followed by a large amount of calories, the body gets confused, which may lead to eating more or expending less energy than normal.

"The data clearly indicate that consuming a food sweetened with no-calorie saccharin can lead to greater body-weight gain and adiposity than would consuming the same food sweetened with high-calorie sugar," Purdue researchers Susan Swithers and Terry Davidson wrote in the journal Behavioral Neuroscience, published by the American Psychological Association.

"Such an outcome may seem counterintuitive, if not an anathema, to human clinical researchers and health care practitioners who have long recommended the use of low- and no-calorie sweeteners as a means of weight control."

Other artificial sweeteners such as aspartame that also taste sweet but do not lead to the delivery of calories may have similar effects, the researchers said.

"Animals may use sweet taste to predict the caloric contents of food. Eating sweet noncaloric substances may degrade this predictive relationship," the researchers wrote.

"With the growing use of noncaloric sweeteners in the current food environment, millions of people are being exposed to sweet tastes that are not associated with caloric or nutritive consequences," the researchers added.

The research was the latest to examine the question of whether artificial sweeteners -- used in many soft drinks and other foods — help or thwart those trying to lose weight. Various studies have offered mixed results.

Industry responds

The new research drew criticism from the food industry.

"This study oversimplifies the causes of obesity," Beth Hubrich, a dietitian with the Calorie Control Council, an industry association representing companies that make low- and reduced-calorie foods and beverages, said in a statement.

"The causes of obesity are multi-factorial. Although surveys have shown that there has been an increase in the use of 'sugar-free' foods over the years, portion sizes of foods have also increased, physical activity has decreased and overall calorie intake has increased," Hubrich added.

I'm a gestational diabetic...ugh.

So I drank the nasty orange stuff, and went in to get my finger poked, and I have found out that I am right above the cutoff for being a diabetic...noooo.

I'm just doing research right now, as I'm not really familiar with diabetes (but ecspecially gestational diabetes).

How is everybody else? :O

Going About My Day and Then...........

So, I was going about my day.  I had finally stopped procrastanting (sp?) and got off of chat, neopets, mindsay, and a few other sites and got busy.

I finally finished dejunking my room.  And while cleaning out my closet, I found one bat, one 12 inch softball and one 11 inch softball, my first catching pud, my last pair of highschool softball cleats, six batting gloves, one lefty mitt, and an equipment bag.  With a suprise!:O  I always wondered where that dayum box of condoms in my senior year had gone too!  Now I know!  At the bottom of my softball equipment bag!:D  Looks like my mom only took the main equipment bag of my softball gear and handed over to my diabetic counselor.  I put all the gear in the bag and it is sitting next to the mudporch door so I can hand it over to my mom's to give to my diabetic counselor.  Once I meet my goals, THEN I can have all my gear back!

I changed my bed sheets (the bi weekly changing!:D), rounded up Randy's and my dirty laundry, put away clothes and had just gone down stairs to start a load of laundry when I got the phone call from the school!

Secratary:  "Jackie?  Can you come up to the school?  DeLaney smashed her fingers into the class room door somehow!"

Me:  "Dayum!  Is she bleeding?  Can she bend her fingers at all?"

Secratary:  "No blood, but lots of swelling and discoloration.  Hold on let me see if she can bend her fingers.  It is on the first knuckles that got it.  She can bend all her first knuckles with out pain but her left ring finger."

Me:  "Dayumit all to hell!  Okay, let me get dressed, call the doc's office to see what they want to do and I will be up."

I got dressed (it was cleaning/lounge day so I took the kids in my jam jams and was still in them!), put a call into the doc's office, called my mom and asked if she could look at the finger before I decieded to drive to the city with DeLaney.  And got on the road.

Luckly by the time I got there, (they were icing the finger down) the swealing had gone way down and according to the Mission Secratary not the school Secratary, the discoloration had gone from angry deep purple down to a angry pink color.  She still couldn't bend that left ring finger though and she had a good size dent in the finger with a bit of dried blood but nothing major.  I signed her out of school and we headed down to the Tribal Clinic so Granny could take a look at her finger for me.

I didn't think it was broke but I wasn't taking any chances.  My mom agreed with me that she didn't think it was broke but suggested I take her up to the doctor anyway.  I again called the doctors office to let them know we were coming up, stopped back at the school and signed Coltin out.  (Randy is on the road, my mom didn't get off of work till 6 this evening, and yay not really an emerency so my dad wasn't going to go pick my boy up for me!)

We were right.  It isn't broke just badly brused.  Doctor didn't even order xrays but we are going to buddy wrap the left ring finger to her tall man finger for a week.  If her nail turns black or if she complains that she can't move it at all, then we are to take her back up to get the nail taken off and then get some xrays.  The doc did clean out the dent and put a small gauze wrap around that and suggested we keep that on for about 3 or 4 days so it doesn't get infected.

What a day.

I treated the kids to what Randy calls "Dog Food" aka McDonald's for an early supper.  When we got home, I dosed DeLaney up with some Motrin and made her ice down her fingers again.  Then we went about our afternoon/evening chores.

I did manage to get a few more loads of laundry done, fiddled with my sewing machine (it is acting up) and managed to get one panel of a set of bottom curtains done for my kitchen.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that we have no more incidents of injuries at school this year.  DeLaney is really worried about testing now for our next taekwondo rank.  We have a couple of finger tip punchies that we have in our form and have to demenstrate on the bags.  I told her not to worry if her fingers are still hurting when it comes time for testing we will let Mr. Johnson know that she can't punch with her left hand and he would understand.  He is allowing mommy to forgo the jump kicks and take steps instead so I dont' injure my knee.

She seemed okay with that.

Now I am off to procrstanate some more.
