I love this idea... that all people, no matter where they come from or who they are have inherent, unalienable rights. It was a great and progressive concept. I think we've come a long way from this sentiment in modern society, however. Not only do we not seem to recognize these rights in ALL people, or even ALL people IN our country, but we don't even recognize them in ALL of our citizens. Where did these simple truths become moot points? When did we decide that only some people in the world have these inherent rights, while others are worthy of bullets and no mercy?
 
 
   
 

Why Sam Brownback Cannot Be President

I was watching the presidential forum that aired on PBS last night. I didn't see the whole thing because I had something very important to do(karaoke). However, I did see enough of it to know that Sen. Sam Brownback either likes to look like an idiot or likes to lie.

 

Now I'll tell you why Mr. Brownback(Isn't that a great name?) cannot be president. You might be thinking that he can't be president because he is from Kansas or that he has no national following. Well, you've got a point. Here's something else to add to the list.

 

Ron Paul had just finished doing his rant about the war. He mentioned that it was undeclared of course. Apparently Sam Brownback didn't hear him. Brownback followed up Paul's brilliant points by saying that we declared war. Hmm, has anyone seen said declaration?

I just wanted to declare for everyone to read that I am a 100% feminine female....even though I can swing a hammer and install bathroom lighting and paint and do some masculine types of manual labour...

Texas Homestead Law

A homestead law helps to protect you from losing your home to creditors. If you are sued for money in court and lose, the person who sued you will receive a judgment from the court. If you do not pay the judgment, they can then try to collect the judgment by garnishing your wages, having your automobile sold or by having you home sold. The homestead law protects a certain amount of your equity in your home from being taken to pay the judgment.

 

Texas has two distinct laws for designating a homestead. The Texas Tax Code offers homeowners a way to apply for homestead exemptions to reduce local property taxes. The Texas Property Code allows homeowners to designate their homesteads to protect them from a forced sale to satisfy creditors. This law doesn’t protect homeowners from tax foreclosure sales of their homes for delinquent taxes.

 

The homeowner must file a claim for homestead exemption with the state, and will not receive the protections of the law until this has been done. Furthermore, the protection can be lost if the homeowner abandons the protected property by taking up primary residence elsewhere.

 

Texas' homestead exemption has no limit on dollar value of the homestead with a 10 acres limit inside a municipality (the urban homestead) and 100 acres outside a municipality (the rural homestead). The rural acre allotment is doubled for a family--200 acres can be shielded from creditors in Texas for a rural homestead. The Texas homestead 'includes all substantially affixed items' on the homestead--houses, swimming pools, a water tower, barn, pumps, roads, etc.
