Again this is some more information for sandyquill or anyone else interested on Samhain. This is more general Pagan/Wiccan beliefs. As you can see there is strong similarities to the more tradational beliefs. My comments and such are put in (). How do you pronounce Samhain? In Ireland it is pronoucned "sow-in". (This part is NOT correct-all the Irish folks I know and talk to say it is pronounced sav in) In Wales and England traditionally "sow-een". (I do NOT believe that is correct for Wales but again the few Welsh folks I talk to are Christian or do NOT speak Welsh)
Samhain is celebrate on Oct. 31st. It is a cross quarter holiday and does not fall on Oct 31st but occers whenever the sun reaches 15 degrees Scorpio. (I don't know about that I base mine off the moons and the sun for a trad date like they use to in the past). Which can fall the first week of November and coincides with the Catholic holiday of Martinmas. (I agree with the Mass part but it doesn't always fall the first week of Nov if you use a different way to caculate which a lot of ppl do to get the trad date of Samhain.......the problems of loosing much of our information!:D-tis why so many celebratte in on the 31st of Oct!)
It is considered and most popular Witches' Holiday.
