Clothes @ MindSay
I'm getting pretty tired....I woke up @ 8:30 and went to pick up Doni to go to Memorial. Too bad she had to go to work. Otherwise we would've kept shopping :)
Now I'm headed to Carolines. Let's see what we can accomplish @ her house.
Here is a list - names of 1950's clothing styles.:
poodle skirt :Girls wore full skirts with motifs on them (ex. poodle with a leash)and tight fitting blouses tucked into the waist capri / pirate pants, pedal pushers, jeans / dungarees, petticoats, "can-can" petticoats, peter pan collared blouse, twin sweater set, cinched belt, pleated skirts, gingham dress, bathing suits: strapless, or haltered one-piece suits, motor scooter slacks, stirrup pants, motor scooter pants, shoes: penny loafers, white buckskin lace up shoes, saddle shoes, pumps, stiletto heel, plastic pop beads, sloppy joe sweater and leotard, bermuda shorts and hawaiian shirt, bobby sox, ankle sox, jeans, t-shirt, leather jacket or denim jacket, glasses: black horned rim, neckerchief, cardigan, turtleneck (black). Note: for men's formal wear: The White Sports Coat became popular. There were other styles of wear but I don't think some of them had a name. For instance, the jackets that men wore got longer, looser, and less shoulder padding. Women's formal wear, strapless was popular

My red petticoat from [surprisingly] Hot Topic!
So, last night The Family minus the brother went to a high school football game at my mom's new school (she wants to show team support--esp. since she's their new french teacher). It was the second football game I've been to, and I must say that I rather enjoyed it. Sure I had to lean over and ask my mom (a "former" sports fanatic) things like "What was that??", "Why don't we have a point, the crowed just cheered?", and "Okay, so why were we all just cheering?", but I can see how people could be football fans, particularly if they actually understand what's going on. By the end of the game I understood the concept of a 1st pass.
Football games seem to combined two of my favorite things to do--"Woooo" loudly and people watch. Also, I must say that watching teams rush at one another from across the field's pretty freakin' exhilarating.
Unfortunately, our team lost. We had 6 points, they had 34. Sad, I know. But it's a poor school, so it's not like they have every opportunity. I still had fun.
The opposing team was a bunch of meat heads (minus the one player that looked like Frodo). They were really aggressive, and had 4-something "out of line" things pinned on them. They were also really cocky, rubbing their achievements in front of the other team (I just reread that last sentence and have recognized the "dirty." Haha oh well, I'm leaving it for humor's sake).
Wow....a sports convert? Possibly. Just don't make me watch baseball.
Tip 1: Hand-me-downs
Babies grow extremely fast and tend to outgrow their clothes in no time. If a close relative or friend has a child only slightly older than yours and has some baby clothes to pass on, go ahead and accept them. In all likelihood, the clothes have only been used a couple of times and will be as good as new. The best part of hand-me-downs? They don't cost a cent.
Tip 2: Unused baby shower gifts
Baby clothes are a common gift given at baby showers. Often, women receive more clothes than their baby will ever use, which are either given away or sold cheap. The best way to spot these baby clothes is to scout around yard sales and look for clothing with the tags still attached.
Tip 3: End of season sales
Buying baby clothes during season-ending sales is a great way to save money on baby clothes, especially if you are partial to branded clothes. The key here is to plan your shopping well in advance. For example, if your spouse is due in summer, you can purchase winter clothes from newborn to 6 months during the previous winter end sale.
Tip 4: Reuse old clothes.
Since your baby is growing really fast, use your creativity and reuse old clothes to make new ones. For example, if your baby has outgrown his or her trousers, cut them to make shorts. Jackets whose sleeves are too short can become waistcoats if you cut the sleeves off.
Looking after young child involves managing a variety of tasks; one of the more pleasurable among these is buying baby clothes. However, shopping for children's clothes requires careful thought. Find out more tips while selecting baby clothes.
Vintage patterns and vintage clothing of the 30's, 40's and 50's were about the same. Here's a basic chart:
Size 12
30 inch bust, 25 inch waist, 33 inch hip
76 cm bust, 63,5 cm waist, 84 cm hip
Size 14
32 inch bust, 26 inch waist, 35 inch hip
81,25 cm bust, 66 cm waist, 89 cm hip
Size 16
34 inch bust, 28 inch waist, 37 inch hip
86,5 cm bust, 71 cm waist, 94 cm hip
Size 18
36 inch bust, 30 inch waist, 39 inch hip
91,5 cm bust, 76 cm waist, 99 cm hip
Size 20
38 bust, 32 waist, 41 hip in inches
96,5 cm bust, 81.25 cm waist, 104 cm hip
Then women's sizes continued from there in terms of bust size... (ie. 40, 42,44... I have seen up to 52, but that is rare)
In the later 50's the sizing changed. The proportions of bust to waist and hip grew larger- now a size 12 was about a 32-25-24 as opposed to a 30-25-33. In earlier patterns of the 20's-early 30's the sizing was also off- 30-26-33 for example, as the waist was meant to be defined less. There were also half sizes- for example in the early 50's, a 13 would be 31-25-34 as opposed to a 12.
For hat sizes for women, take a tape measure and meaure right above the ears. This measurement in inches is your corrosponding hat size.
For gloves measure around your hand at the widest part, not including your thumb. Your meaurement in inches will be your glove size (i.e. 6, 6.5, 7)
For shoes lay a tape measure flat an measure the bottom of your foot from heel to toe. Make sure you do this while your weight is on your foot so you get the proper length. Then meaure across the ball of your foot at the widest part. This is your width. Match these meaurements to the shoes, but add about a quarter inch in length for comfort. Check out this link on About for finding your size for an alternate method, but always check your meaurement with a dealer to ensure fit as shoe sizes were sometimes different back then.
