Cherry @ MindSay
(scroll down for the recipe)
I get my ice cream maker next week! We'll see what kind of trouble I can get into.
I was at home when the call came out for a brush fire which a resident was unable to control and it was approaching a structure.
I checked google maps to see where it was. Yesterday I responded from my TN residence to my GA fire department in my car to another brush fire and had to stop and ask directions : "Hi, I'm a new member of the volunteer fire department. Can you tell me where Creek Road is? I have to go to a fire." LOL!
I was enroute to the Bishop Road scene today when the chief, who was already there with Tanker 41 (it carries 3000 gallons of water and a booster line for smaller fires) called for additional manpower from the station. I detoured and headed to the fire hall figuring I'd get there with others and respond with them. As I crested the hill and started down towards the fire house, Engine 4 came into view and went on the air with two personnel.
Looks like I was on my own and I first thought I'd just grab my gear and respond to the scene in my pickup when over the station radio I heard "Engine 4 to personnel at Station 4. Please respond with the tanker".
Woo-hoo!
I threw my gear into the passenger seat, unplugged the charger, started 'er up and waited for the air to build up in the brake system. Meanwhile the Chief was calling and I was uncertain if I should answer since the unit wasn't responding yet and I still had not been assigned a member number to use on the radio.
After what seemed like forever the air came up, I released the brakes, hit the lights, flipped in the siren and grabbed the mike "Tanker 4 responding, Dade".
Knowing about yesterday's event, the Chief who recognized my voice came on the air again and asked "Tanker 4, are you familiar with this address?" LOL!
"!0-4, Tanker 41. I'm enroute, status 1" (driver only) I replied.
I tried, I admit, to get my camera going as I went past the truck stop, air horn blaring, siren screaming, creeping up the long grade at 30mph with the overweight vehicle, but I must have 'double-clicked' the shutter button as the video started and stopped without my knowing it.
A flatbed 18 wheeler pulled out in front of me with a load of steel rebar and refused to pull over as we both picked up speed before making the steep grade of Hooker Hill. I was on his bumper but could not pass him and he simply would not go to the shoulder knowing it would force him to gear down and start over again. So thank you asshole trucker. Lights and siren, I had to gear down and come to a stop on the steep grade as he slowed to 5mph and I still couldn't go around him.
I let him gain a hundred yards or so and then began the slow uphill climb again. By the time I came to the turn off I was on his bumper again siren and horn blaring at him the whole way. A column of smoke was clearly visible above the treeline.
Not much of a fire - a previous fire had taken an old uninhabited trailer to its metal frame and the owner of the property simply treated the whole thing as a dump. Somehow he had started a grass fire that worked into the old debris and while he tried to control it with a garden hose, it spread across about a 1/4 acre of land next to his home and adjacent to the woods.
People, CALL 9-1-1 FIRST, then try to fight the fire if you think it is safe to do so! A fire can double in size every minute.
The main fire had been knocked down by John with a handline off Engine 4, Tanker 41 was still running a booster line into the wooded perimeter manned by a Georgia Forestry firefighter who also had responded, and the yellow 3" line hooked to my Tanker 4 to supply the masterstream with Ryan operating it.
I hooked up to the Engine and supplied its 500 gallon tank with my additional 2000 gallons as well as supplying Ryan's "blitz" line, a heavy duty master stream that can pump hundred of gallons per minute through its nozzle onto a fire.
Then a quick disconnect, a shuttle to a hydrant a block from my Lazy B property, and back to the fireground to hit the hotspots. Afterwards I refilled Tanker 4 a second time and chatted with a neighbor and by then the others had returned to the station and gone back to work.
Not much excitement, but at least I finally have my first response as an emergency driver and a pump operator under my belt - it only took a year!bigb.
You know, when I first started seeing all those products at Walmart that said "zero trans fats" but also included ingredients like "partially hydrogenated oils" I wondered......I happen to know that partially hydrogenated oils are seriously harmful. They essentially cause receptor sites to be slow, kind of arthritic in a way. They no longer can work properly. I wondered....how truthful are those labels about trans fat? Here's an article from someone else who also wondered...and what he found out! I also have more information on trans fats here:

| The Hidden Government Truth About Zero Trans-Fats Labels | Related: HEALTHY WEIGHT LOSS |
Deceptive Zero Trans-Fats Labeling, Government Lies, FDA Censorship, Cherry Producers Under Fire...and more!
When the government announced the new labeling law that forced food processors to list on their label the trans-fats amount their product contained, we were delighted. I’m afraid that our joy was a bit misplaced.
As is so typical of our government, we did not get the whole truth.
What the government didn’t tell us in their announcement was that food processors were permitted to include in their product up to ½ percent of trans-fats and call that zero trans-fats on the label. Perfëctly lëgal. Canadians are better off then we are in the U.S. Their government calls zero .2 percent.
I don’t know about you, but when someone says zero to me, that means zilch, nothing, none, not an inkling of trans-fats in the product!
So once again the government has lied to us when it comes to protecting our health by leading us to believe that when the label says zero trans-fats, it really can mean some trans-fats.
There is nothing we can do with regard to the new label law and the FDA, or the USDA, but there sure is plenty we can do as far as food processors are concerned. We have the power of the dollar.
Withhold your purchase of any processed food. Write to the companies first. Tell them you know that it’s legal to put up to ½ percent trans-fats in their product even though they have listed it to be zero trans-fats.
You want to know how much trans-fats they have included and you want it in writing. None of these companies will write you that there are no trans-fats if there really are, for fear of a massive law suit.
Actually, better still, the best thing you can do for your health is to not buy processed foods because the lies from the government are quite broad.
They lie when they say it’s ok to eat small amounts of the thousands of different chemicals they have allowed food processors to add to their processed food without listing them on the labels. That’s like saying it’s ok to eat a little bit of poison.
Food processors add different combinations of these chemicals to their processed foods to enhance the flavor of their other wise tasteless products. Perfëctly lëgal, and you pay the price for it in developed diseases.
Even more outrageous is the FDA and their censorship that prohibits growers of fresh fruits from disseminating scientific information about the health benefits of eating fresh fruit.
A good example of this censorship is what the FDA did to the cherry growers and their distributors.
They had listed on their web site the scientifically proven health benefits derived from eating cherries. Scientific studies such as: Kang SY, Seeram NP, Nair MG, Bourquin LD. Tart cherry anthocyanins inhibit tumor defelopment in Apc (Min) mice and reduce proliferation of human colon cancer cells. Cancer Lett. 2003 May 8; 194(1)L13-9 were listed.
(There are many of these studies too numerous to list here.)
Instead of the FDA applauding these findings and encouraging people to eat cherries, on October 17, 2005, the FDA banned all information about cherries health benefits.
Their letter was sent to 29 companies that market cherries to cease and desist publicizing scientific data about cherries.
According to the FDA, when they publish this data, the cherries become unapproved drugs and are subject to seizure. The FDA went on further to say that if they continued to inform consumers about these scientific studies, they would be subject to criminal prosecution.
This is real. This is not a fantasy. The FDA has the power to do this, I quote from their letter: “These claims cause your product to be a drug as defined in section 201 (g). Because this product is not generally recognized as safe and effective when used as labeled, it is also defined as a new drug in section 201 (p). Under section 505 of the Act(21 USC355), a new drug may not be legally marketed in the United States without an approved New Drug Application.”
Can you believe they are talking about cherries? And why did the FDA pick on cherries? Simple---because it threatens the pharmaceutical industries sale of drugs for cancer.
Cherries are not the only natural food product that the FDA has censored. It has successfully censored proven health claims of all too many natural foods and nutritional supplements to the detriment of the public.
We must not let this outrageous censorship continue and we now have an opportunity with new allies to hopefully finally prohibit the FDA from preventing us from learning the truth about the health benefits of different foods and nutritional supplements.
On November 10, 2005, a bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would prohibit the FDA from denying consumers access to truthful health information. The bill’s name is the Health Freedom Protection Act (H.R.4282).
Here is an excerpt from the speech of the original sponsors:
“Because of the FDA’s censorship of truthful health claims, millions of Americans may suffer with diseases and other health care problems they may have avoided by using dietary supplements. For example, the FDA prohibited consumers from learning how folic acid reduces the risk of neural tube defects for four years after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended every woman of childbearing age take folic acid supplements to reduce neural tube defects. This FDA action contributed to an estimated 10,000 cases of preventable neural tube defects!”
You can see from this how important it is that each and every one of us write or email our Congressmen, Congresswomen, and Senators that you want them to pass H.R. 4282 (Health Freedom Protection Act).
If you do not know their email address or office address, go to: www.visi.com/juan/congress . Click on the down arrow and click on your state. Then enter your zip code and click on “Submit it”. That is all you have to enter. The name and addresses of your representatives will come up.
Tell them to stop the FDA’s censorship. Tell them you have a right to know how to protect your health. Tell them to pass the bill.
Do it now. If you wait, it won’t get done. This is too important to let slip. Pass this email on to as many as you can. Thanks for your efforts.
