This mix is actually the second that I ever made using software instead of live turntables, but it's proved to be a favorite among my friends so I thought I would offer it up here first.

A little about this mix:
I had the idea to do a straight up battle mix and this was the result. I also chose to give it as much of an old school sound as possible, so none of the mix points use anything but volume tricks (no EQ changes). I broke my own rule a little with the adding of "Renegade Master" with "Old School Scat", but the effect was just too cool to skip.
Tom's Diner is a rather famous acapella track that most people recognize instantly as it starts to play. The version I used here is a break remix with no name attached (from a white label record). I sped this version way up to blend with the other tracks and I ended up really liking how it sounded.
"Last Bongo in Brighton" actually is "Electric Rain Dance"... or at least the beginning is. "Last Bongo" starts with the sampled drum beat of "Rain Dance", adds a little more bass, then quickly switches to the guitar and horns part. It's actually kind of hard to distinguish the two tracks and where the mix point is exactly even tho I just slammed from one to the other.
"Clear" by Cybertron is the beat that Missy Elliot used for her hit single "Lose Control". Drop the Boom is a remix of the Freestyle track "Don't Stop the Rock". "Renegade Master" is technically a remix of "Old School Scat".
I used two Zeb Rok Ski tracks on accident, but would have used more if I was paying less attention. Zeb Rok Ski is a standard name when it comes to Old School Breaks. The fact Zeb makes mostly compilations and medleys makes mixing out of his stuff a breeze and adds a more playful air to the overall mix.
I am listed as DJ Maru as the artist here. The first nine or ten mixes I post will have that name only, but after that it will be split with DJ Maru/KillerJunglist. I haven't quite decided if I want to change my name on my mixes yet.
Please use the Mediafire link (once it is posted) as your main download source. It will have the most updated file information and album art etc. If the Mediafire link doesn’t work for some reason, please feel free to use the mirrors provided. Thanks!

Hey everybody, it's me, DJ Maru AKA KillerJunglist.
In this, my super brand new blog I will be posting all my music crap including mixes, mash-ups, original tracks and possibly more. I started posting my mixes on my old blog (www.mindsay.marukun.com) but that blog isn't about music, so I am starting this one in order to keep everything nice and neat.
In the next week or so I will start putting up the most recent mixes that I have made as well as some of my better practice sessions. I will also put up some tracks that I made in the past that I am proud of and some mash-ups that I made as well. I would also like to post links to other artists' tracks that I like, but I am currently making sure it is okay with them so that might take a little longer.
As this is my first blog entry, allow me to introduce myself.
I go by two DJ names, DJ Maru and KillerJunglist. My nickname in real life is Maru, but it turns out there are a bunch of DJs with that name already. KillerJunglist was coined by a friend of mine a while ago when I was spinning a Jungle set. And speaking of Jungle, My preferred styles of dance music are (in order):
1. Jungle/Drum and Bass
2. Battle/Old School/New Skool breaks
3. House (mostly UK Hard, but also Funky and Disco)
4. Old School Hip Hop
5. Unclassifiable (I like taking old rock and roll and such and mixing it... sort of like medleys).
I use software and turntables to mix. I am currently living in Japan (until November of this year) and far away from my turntables, so I have been making all my mixes on MixMeister; a simple but very useful (and inexpensive) piece of mixing software. My turntables are Numark TTXs and my mixer is a Denon DNX 100. I plan on getting a pair of CD mixers upon my return to America so I can include more songs into my live mixes.
My philosophy on DJing is simple: as long as it sounds good and/or moves the crowd you're doing it right. I don't care if you use two tape decks with no mixer, if you can keep the flow going then you are doing your job. I feel that creativity in DJing is what it's all about.
As an added bonus, I am willing to take mix requests. Here is how it works:
Leave a comment with your idea for a mix. You can give a specific playlist, some artists you like or just a genre with some song titles and, if I am inspired enough by it, I will take your requests and make a full length (30, 45 or 60 minute) mix out of them. I will post the mix on this blog and give inspirational credit (song credit too, if you happen to be an artist) to you. Mix requests will be considered by song availability (in the case of artists wanting their own music mixed by me please tell me where I can download a copy), time consideration and mixability (if you want a mix that goes from Elvis at 102 bpm to KMFDM at 165, I doubt it's gonna happen). I think it could be fun tho, so let's hear what you want to hear!
So that's my story. I will have my first mix posted within a few days, so stay tuned and start thinking of those requests!

Post Script - I am not posting a mix today because I plan on writing some trivia about the tracks I used in each mix first. I am also planning on making a podcast soon that works on the same idea; talking about the artists and songs used and then playing the mix in full.

There are actually two versions of this mix, and I will post the second one as soon as I encode it. The only differance between the two is track 21... in the alternative mix I used "Push-Up" by the Freestylers.
I will place the link here when it is ready.
This House mix is pretty summer-y if you ask me, so roll down the windows, pump up the system and just let it ride.
On a related note, I have now made a total of seven sets (not including my old Jungle mixes) and am seriously thinking about starting a podcast to highlight them. My plan is to talk about the tracks, style, mood, theme and/or history of the music I used and then play the full track. If I garnered any type of success in this endeavor I would also like to feature other peoples DJ sets and talk about those as well. I'll just have to try it out and see.

It's about 45 minutes long, so it's the perfect thing to listen to on, say, your drive to work. It's also pretty Break-dancey so it could be used for your next session. Whatever the case, enjoy and spread the love.

Hello ..... it's been a long, long time....
After my last return, we had the inevitable Holidays, and following those I managed to chip a bone in my foot. We are having a most bizarre winter here in Nova Scotia, warm raining days, followed by freezing ice and snow, melting high temps, then more ice .... as a result we've had record numbers of broken bones in our ER. I happened to be one of them, though minor, I chipped bone in my heal. It had me in bed and literally on ice for a few weeks. However now I am back to work, and other than some pain when I am on my feet to much, am doing better.
While resting in my forced break, I was reminded of the "pain" of daytime television. What pitiful stuff to have to watch when there is little else to do. I read as much as I could, and without a lap top could only spend a little time on the computer. I napped, I talked to the dogs, phoned people not working, but until my 14 year old came home from school, for the most part I was stuck with the TV for "entertainment". As the days went by I grew less and less tolerent of what is being projected as entertaining. Other than "Oprah", it all seems to be conflict - conflict with other people, conflict with our own bodies, conflict with the law, in politics, with religons, in schools, with loved ones. Dr. Phil, who I used to enjoy on occasion had almost every show about "conflict". I wondered, since when did "conflict with the world" become the norm ? Did I miss that decade? What happened to good manners, kindness, compassion, and just plain common sense ? Maybe that's why most days I feel like I'm "just not getting it", because conflict is a rare thing in my life, and when it happens, I try to resolove it quickly, or after a little venting make a concious choice to let go, but rarely do I hold onto it for very long. Certainly not long enough to take to court before Judge Judy, or to Dr. Phil, or to really even mention to anyone in particular. My conflict belongs to me, I either caused it, or am part of the cause if I am involved in it, so it's up to me to my part to fix conflict, not take it elsewhere and make it bigger.
Perhaps that's why so many people look outside themsleves for help. As children, at least in my "generation", just past the baby-boom, we didn't have particularly good role models for conflict resolution, and didn't pass it on to the Yuppie's, the X-generation, and whatever we are calling it these days. The model now seems to be to spread it as wide and far as you can, or blame thyself, or take it to a public forum, or fight it out on TV ....and the list goes on. Maybe that's why everyone in my workplace ... grown adults and professionals, were to attend a "conflict resolution" one day seminar. Imagine! Since all I do all day is help resolve conflict, I could abstain from the 1200.00 a day "consultant's" program ... oh I have to laugh, or cry .... aha- a conflict!! LOL!!
So now it is the middle of February. That awful month, short but snotty!! One never knows what February brings in my part of the world, it's unpredictable and like my now 15 year old (on Feb. 11), is forever changing it's mind and clothes. I think February must be an adolescent, glum one day, overjoyed the next, dealing with constant changes, funny, annoying, lovable yet will drive one to drink!!! Oh well, it'll soon be March ... and I turn 50 in March...accckkkk. That's a whole other blog, but I am actually celebrating it with lots of fun, friends, sex, and a great photoshoot I just had for that little Vaudevill/Burlesque Troop/Mae West thing I am doing. (See new pic on Blog).
Here's hoping my blog buddies will know I am still alive, and now kicking again. Stay off the ice, and I'll be back soon.....
Namaste
Heather
