I should be wearing black.
I thought I made a post earlier about the gaming company Majesco, but I can't seem to find it.  Majesco has been in the business a long time, but had a new strategy that I really admired.  New and original franchises.  It was a risk to create something without a current "brand" name, but if things went well... you have all rights to your own products.  A great idea that not many game developers use.  Majesco brought us Bloodrayne, Psychonaughts, Infected and Advent Rising.

I was very excited for this company's approach and really hoped they did well.

Majesco's net revenue for the 4th quarter of 2005 was $4.6 million.  There previous year was $45.3 million.  This information came from an article on CNN's Money: Game Over.

Things don't look good for Majesco.  The article mentioned that the company is going to focus more on handhelds and mobile devices... this leaves me a little hope that Bloodrayne will still appear on the PSP.  It is just sad that a company like Planet Moon which is known for their quirky humor and strange gameplay will have a hard time finding another publisher willing to take on their games.

In a market where EA dominates, it was nice to know that a smaller publisher would work with smaller game houses.  Their fall is a real hit to any aspiring game makers.

UPDATE: I found that on their website you can watch the webcast of the board of directors meeting.  Their press release of the 4th quarter earnings mentioned that their plans for next year will include selling off some licenses, but didn't mention which ones.  I'm going to be uber-geeky tonight and watch the hour long board meeting to see if they mention the future of Bloodrayne.

UPDATE AGAIN: So I found this article on IGN... looks like PSP Bloodrayne has been cancelled.  Damnit!

Someone, Please Stab My Eyes Out...

This weekend, I was faced with a dilemma:  Should I see the BloodRayne movie, or boycott it in protest of the fact Uwe Boll should not be allowed to live?  As a gamer, I'm torn:  I want them to keep making movies based on video games, because I think a lot of games have potential to be really, really fantastic movies.  However...I want them to make good movies.  And that means Uwe Boll must die a horribly painful death.

When they release the weekend box-office figures, I'm ashamed to admit that my $8.25 will be counted among whatever pittance that steaming pile of crap movie managed to pull in.  I knew it wasn't going to be good.  It's not a good sign that they couldn't even get Rayne's hair color right (a shade of red I am now proudly sporting, I might add).  That and they chose an actress who, it just so happens, looks horrendous with red hair (Kristanna Loken).

I could go on & on about little nit-picky things that only someone who played the games would know (Rayne has GREEN eyes, not blue) but really, there's no need to focus on the small inconsistencies when the entire movie is so horrible.  The games are set in the 1930's-40's (or at least the first one was) but they moved the time period back to the 1700's.  Why?  According to Kristanna Loken, they made it that way so that the story would be a prequel.  That's all well and good, but the problem is they used the same (sort of) plot from the game...so it's not a prequel, it's just the same story put in a different time period because every stupid vampire movie ever made takes place in the 18th century.

The worst part, by far, was what they did to the character of Rayne.  It wasn't enough for them to destroy the plot, they also had to change her from a sarcastic, ass-kicking, "I-don't-need-anyone's-help" bad-ass to a whiny, pathetic little shadow of her video game alter-ego.  When we first see Rayne, she's being held prisoner at a traveling circus and exhibited as a freak...but she won't fight back 'cause she doesn't want to hurt humans.  Excuse me?!!?  The video game Rayne may not feed on humans, but she certainly would not have any qualms about tearing them apart if they tried to use her as the main attraction.

The only good thing I saw was that they made  a nod towards the video game in including some of Rayne's special fighting moves, but you'd certainly have to be alert to notice them.  Most of the fight scenes looked like they were filmed by someone in the midst of a grand-mal seizure.  They also took away Rayne's pornographic style of feeding, I assume to maintain the film's PG-13 rating (sadly that did not stop them from including shots of Kristanna Loken's breasts during the ridiculous sex scene...according to my friend Chris that was the best part of the movie.)

Next on the chopping block is Silent Hill, my all-time favorite console game.  It comes out in April.  At least Uwe Boll isn't directing it, although I'm still worried.

I just couldn't keep it in my wallet.
I suppose that should be expected when it comes to Bloodrayne.

I remember picking up my first issue of "Play" Magazine.  The periodical seemed to try their hand at high-art game journalism.  It also had the price tag to prove it being way more expensive then the regular "in-your-face" gaming news that everyone is used to.  So I picked up my first issue in hopes of something good...

"Play" gave Wario World for the Gamecube one of their highest ratings... the rest of the world did not.

So while I don't take "Play" seriously as game reviewing mag, It is one beautiful book to look at.  I noticed that right away with my first issue and especially on one page that featured a sexy red-head with blood dripping from her mouth.  Nazi bodies were littered on the floor behind her.  It was at this moment, I fell in love with Bloodrayne.

Can you blame me though?  Hot girl, Half Vampire and Dead Nazis... It was like the gaming gods had read my mind and were creating the perfect game out of it.  Wolfenstein is a classic because of it's setting, Vampires powers are cool and being married to Nomad  shows that I love hot girls!

So I waited and waited for this new intellectual property to be released...

In the end, Bloodrayne 1 was pretty good.  There was a lot to love, but it also felt like a second tier game.  The actual gameplay didn't deliver the amazing experience it could have.  To be honest, the only reason I think I still love the game is because of Hot girl, Half Vampire and Dead Nazis... the gameplay was just the means to get me to all those things.

Fast-forward years later and Allaroundpsycho  finally borrows my copy of Bloodrayne and becomes hooked on this woman and 'verse as well.  He also got hooked right about the time that Bloodrayne 2 came out.  He buys it and I planned on borrowing his copy.  Problem was, I never got to borrow it.  He would have let me, but the fact that I could borrow it at anytime almost meant that I wouldn't.  I had other things to play and BR2 never got into my Xbox.

My previous blog entry talked about the game Infected, a zombie slaughter that I hope is as awesome as it sounds. I just found out that Bloodrayne will be an unlockable character.  Once I read that, I started reading up on Bloodrayne again and the fever kicked in full force again.

I wanted to borrow AAP's copy of Bloodrayne 2, but he wasn't going to be visiting for awhile.  I tried to tell myself I could wait, but that was a losing battle.  Tuesday night I held a copy of the game in my hand and it was good.  Once I get in a certain mindset, nothing will break that until I've accomplished what it is I need (well, think I need.)  The only real downfall of this is that it doesn't work on dishes, laundry or chores in general.  Hm?

I admit the text above is very long. Doesn't leave me too much time to talk about Bloodrayne 2 as a game.  Here is a quick impression.

Like the first one, I love the girl and world... but the gameplay isn't completely there for me.  Fighting is a lot more fun in this one and the amount of ways to dispatch an enemy keeps me smiling, but I don't get to do it as often as I like.  These bad guys are nothing more then something for me to harvest.  Every gauge I use is filled by the blood of my victims.  Health: feed from enemies. Rage: feed from enemies, but press X or B (Rage allows me to do the cool vampire moves.) Bullets: feed from enemies and press R.   You read that right, Bloodrayne stops using conventional weapons and gets a set of Dragon-something guns.  These guns turn blood into projectiles to be fired.  Fill up with the blood of your victims, but if you run out... it takes your blood.  In other words, DON'T USE THE GUNS WHEN YOUR OUT OF AMMO!

Why give me hundreds of way to maim and destroy when it seems that I always need to harvest some gauge that is low.  There is my biggest complaint so far of the game.

Other then that (and a nasty case of glitching during a boss fight), I'm having a good time.  The 'verse of Bloodrayne never looked so good.
