Bathroom @ MindSay

Professional Development Day
While sitting around the table in the conference meeting during our 2.5 hour afternoon session with our behaviorist, principal, counselor, my staff, and the assistant Special Ed director for the district, we began to talk about people thinking about their schedules and when they might have a half hour or 45 minutes to relieve me so I could do some testing on kids or lead small groups about socializing (aka, what my job was supposed to be from the get-go).  Someone else said "or go to the bathroom".

Is it wrong that I was able to joke, "Nah, that's what 3 o'clock is for!" and Nathan (the ass't director of Special Ed) quipped, "3?  That seems a little early ....".  I actually kind of loved that moment...but it also kinda sucks realizing that my first minute to myself where I can do things like go to the bathroom USUALLY don't happen until 3pm...which is when the school day ends.

I think progress shall be made.  I have good feelings about this.

Pictures -- My life is awesome, part one.
So, remember how I said I wanted to post pictures (of my camwhoring self) from the past month in a sort of jumbled, non-chronological order? Well when I complied a folder of all the pictures I wanted to post, I manged to reach 100. Gah damn. So I'll be doing 4 or 5 picture posts . . . not that any of this matters or that any of you care what I do . . .

I Get Weirded Out...
using the girl's bathroom at school.

I guess there are a few reasons, but I want to start by saying it is NOT because I am secretly a boy (eddiec, I know you've had a bad dream about this lately, and I just wanted to let you know it isn't THAT).

The first reason is, it's okay before and after school, when there aren't kids, but when school is in session... I don't wanna pee with a 2nd grader next to me (damn grown-up bathrooms being so damn far away!).  You know?  That's weird.  As a grown-up, it's weird for me, and also, I don't EVER want to be accused of doing ANYTHING not-appropriate.

The second reason is...and it's not just this school, but apparently all schools... kids no longer know how to flush.  Parents aren't teaching this skill. Everyday, without fail, if I got into the multi-stalled bathroom, I will get the privilege of seeing the remnants of someone else's bathroom time.  9 times outta 10 just yellow, but... not delicious either way.

Which brings me to my next 'weirds me out' part:  A LOT of the time, there's pee in the toilet, but no toilet PAPER.  In a toilet designed exclusively for girls.   Are they not even doing that part?  shudders

Now that I've found the 'adults only' bathroom that has a heater... this will be a non-issue because why go ANYwhere else?, but....eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew!

Small Bathroom Design

While it would be great to have all the space you want for each room in your house, the reality is that sometimes, space is limited. Attention to small bathroom design can help you deal with this limitation and still put some personal touch in your bathroom. Most houses have small bathrooms, precisely because this room is usually built to be efficient and not much more. Remember, bathroom design ideas do not have to be limited to big, luxurious bathrooms. With a little bit of extra planning and attention to detail, your remodeled small bathroom design can be all you need and more.

Two of the most important items that add to small bathroom design are colors and mirrors. For example, the planned use of mirrors can give the room a larger appearance (especially if mirrors face each other). A full-length mirror may be an ideal choice for the smaller room. Careful selection of lighting, in combination with mirrors, will do wonders in giving the small bathroom design a roomier appearance.

In addition, you probably want to make a limited-space bathroom too dark when choosing paint, wallpaper, or tile. Dark colors can make the room seem smaller. Most designers and decorators will suggest lighter, brighter colors for the illusion of space and warmth. Some designers strongly urge an off-white or very light pastel color. It may be best to avoid too many colors or patterns, because a small room can quickly seem "cluttered."

With small bathroom design, attention to basics is even more important than with larger rooms. A bathroom should be efficient and functional, so take careful measurements to be sure you allow enough room for each activity. One method suggests an area about three feet by four feet in front of the lavatory. Another method suggests 30 inches or slightly more from the center of the toilet to a wall or another fixture. An enclosed shower is most comfortable with at least three feet of space from one wall to another. These measurements are not meant to be absolute standards, but they can help when you are worker with your remodeling contractor or plumber.

A few other suggestions for making the most of limited bathroom space might be selective placing of windows and careful attention to window size; use of recessed shelves for storage; sliding doors, and corner shower. Inward-opening doors can be a problem in a small room. Careful selection and placement of the bathtub or shower (the largest fixture in the room) goes a long way toward making a small bathroom design work. Once you have accepted the fact that space is limited, it is time to move on to using that space in the best way possible. Your bathroom may not be spacious and luxurious, but a great small bathroom design might get you closer than you think.
