Airport @ MindSay

serene scene inside the Detroit airport

I'm sitting in a lounge inside the Detroit airport.  I'm on my way to Orlando for a work-related convention.  There's a neat water fountain here that shoots out jets of water in rythmic patterns - fun to watch.  Above, there is an electric tram that carries travelers between concourses - one goes by every few minutes.    I love the cherry red color.  There are birds inside here (sparrows), flitting from tree to tree and chirping jubilantly. Twice now, a sparrow has landed on the floor about 5 feet from me.  One of them had a leaf in its beak.  What an interesting permeation of nature in a place you'd least expect it.  I'll upload some pics later.

We got a new airport now
Our city has a new airport from today. Time to rejoice ? Sadly, NO.

The earlier airport (Begumpet) was almost at our backyard -- it was a mere 10 minute drive from home.

Now the new airport (Shamshabad) will be 60 kilometres from home, and will
require a 2 hour drive through some of the crowdest part of the city.

Those of you who are planning to fly down to Hyderabad, india, remember this new development.

Progress can sometimes be a disadvantage.

So my flight was cancelled today...
HIGHLY disappointed right now....so very bummed out. :(

I had everything packed and ready. Everything was set to go. The planed pulled away from the gate and began it's safety check, when something failed. Something was wrong with one of the tail rudders so they wouldn't let us takeoff. The pilot brought the plane back to the gate and they had maintenance try to fix the problem, but after 45 minutes they decided to kick us off the plane so they could work on it. By this time I was already going to miss my connecting flights, so I had to go to special services to see if they could manage to get me another flight. UNFORTUNATELY nothing else was available, so they sent me all the way back to Ticketing, to try and book me another flight. I basically spent another 2 hours with the ticket agent trying to find me a flight and trying to book that flight. Some sort of complication came up where Lufthansa wasn't letting my ticket cancel. After that was figured out, they notified me that my luggage was sent to another plane heading for Charlotte, N. Carolina. So now my luggage is in N. Carolina without me and it's going to stay there until my flight on thursday. They managed to book me another flight on thursday with the same connecting flights. So there's nothing I really have to worry about, since my luggage will be waiting for me.

However, I'm still pretty upset about this whole ordeal...I've waited so long for this day and it ended up being cancelled.....I guess it's a good thing though, since the plane was having technical problems, but still....

I'm not exactly in a good mood right now...:(

Leaving for Germany TODAY!!! YEAH!
So here I am at 12am the day I'm leaving still packing...Like this is a surprise.

I'm so excited and yet so nervous! But still über excited! As I'm packing things, it's all starting to sink in that I will be in germany on my own for 6 months! This is fan-freeking-tasmic! (yeah I made that word up) I still have so much more to pack; I'm totally going to go over the 50lb no charge. My one suitcase feels like 70lbs or so already. I still have all my other clothes to pack and I don't think they're all going to fit in my one suitcase. How do airlines expect people to pack so lightly? The way I'm packing things, it's like I'll be living there for a few years! Hahah..

I'm taking a break right now. I'm sweaty and stressed. I also can't seem to find a lighter and I really want to smoke. Oh about that. I'm going to quit smoking as soon as I reach Germany. I only have a few more cigarettes left and I will finish those before I leave for the airport. Oh listen to this bullcrap. I leave pittsburgh international airport and arrive in North Carolina, then I fly over to Frankfurt, and then finally Nürnberg. The last time I went to Germany I only had to fly to philly then straight to Munich. What's up with this bullcrap? It's like I'm flying backwards, just to fly forwards again....and you'd think airlines would want to conserve gasoline...

Oh well, I won't be able to update until thursday night or friday! Wish me luck!

Tschuess!!!

Dogs & Airplanes
The last few days here in Linyi have been rainy and gray. This is the kind of weather I expect in winter, so it is not altogether unwelcome. I’m just glad that our trip to Mt. Tai coincided with blue skies. Anyway, although the skies are overcast today, our students were able to fly. Flying here has been a little hit and miss over the last month. The closer we get to winter, the greater the chance for low visibility. Fall is the best time for flying, but the number of clear days are slowly dwindling.

There are other challenges here that limit flying, and I’ve been meaning to post about those. I had some setbacks because of my grad school classes, however, and couldn’t spend a lot of time writing blog posts. Today I will share something that maybe can’t be considered a challenge, but is something unexpected, nevertheless.

One of today’s flights was delayed slightly due to a “runway incursion.” Not that an aircraft was at risk of colliding with another aircraft or vehicle, but rather a dog had wandered too close to the runway. Wildlife are often a problem at big airports, especially birds. A bird strike can damage airplane surfaces and engines. At many airports, loud noises are used to scare birds away. At others, poison is used to deal with them. I’ve even heard of some airports that employ trained hawks to keep birds away. A friend of ours who flies in Africa sometimes has to deal with elephants and giraffe wandering onto the runway. I’m really not sure what the procedure is for a dog, but today we felt sure someone would just try to scare the poor thing away.

Instead, someone was dispatched to “take care” of the dog. With a shotgun.

I guess the moral to this story is dog may be man’s best friend, but man is not always dog’s best friend. Dogs and airplanes don’t mix at our local airport.
