Scholars are fairly sure that the oldest of our star groups trace back to the Mesopotamian peoples of five or more millennia ago. In fact, the creatures that were made into the ancient Western constellations are similar to those in the Bible. And there are hints that some are far older.
The fact that the Big Dipper, now nearly overhead for most northern observers at around 11:30 p.m. local daylight time, formed a bear to American Indians and to cultures of the Old World and Siberia suggests that our Ursa Major is a very ancient star pattern.
Long ago, when the forms of animals and heroes were pictured against the stars, a large bear was represented in this particular region, a bear with a surprisingly long tail (because the Dipper has a long handle). In fact, it is a piece of Stone Age culture that is probably at least 8,000 to 12,000 years old. That is the estimated era of the last migration from Siberia to North America across the Bering Strait. The far-northern region of the world where this starry figure wheels high in the heavens came to be known as the Arctic region â the abode of Arktos, which in Greek literally meant bearish.
Many things
The Big Dipper itself has been a source of frustration to some constellation historians. Who exactly originated this name? For much of the world this pattern has been, if not a bear, then some sort of wagon.
In Ireland, for instance, it was recognized as "King David's Chariot," from one of that island's early kings; in France, it was the "Great Chariot." Another popular name was Charles's Wain (a wain being a large open farm wagon). In the British Isles, however, these seven stars are known widely as "The Plough."
But as a long-handled pot or ladle it is strictly an American phenomenon, first mentioned in 19th-century astronomy books, but apparently not before then. A very convincing tin dipper it is with its handle bent downward.
It's been ages since i've come back! For some weird reason i'm unable to access mindsay at home but at uni I can? Strange indeed help!
Buddy of mine got me a birthday present which was awfully nice of her, even though she didn't have to and I told her many times not to, she still did anyway! Too bad it feels like I haven't spoken to or caught up with her in ages, feels like we're kinda distancing ourselves a bit, but then again she's busy, she works and has a boyfriend so thats all completely understandble.
Considering it's October already I can't believe how fast the years gone, feels like I haven't done anything at all. Accomplished little and wasted so much time. So long weekend had just passed, took the kids at youth group to the park and did a little sports day thing and looked afer the older kids at a sleepover and man, are the kids now that dumbed down or we're generation x that oblivious to things as well?
Failed an assignment by the way. Which leads me to the thought of having to repeat the subject again next year which will hamper my initial plans of just finishing up by July 09. I just find it so frustrating that as students we're meant to learn for ourselves yet when we cannot fathom the concept we like to blame things other then themselves, which I know i'm very guilty of.
The waiting game begins yet again...
So end of year camp is coming up, which i'm so nervous about, not really ready and not much info or guidance by the others but we'll see how it all goes. Youth groups been a mixed bag of lollies lately, you seem to enjoy most of them but then some days are like the little licquorice lollies you get and despise. I dunno some days just get to me while others I don't have a care in the world.
Hope friends and family have been well!

Well Here Some Lyrics From The Sonmg Within The Dark Mind By Immortal
Seas and rivers high
Deeps and waterfalls
Massive mountains
Powerful mountains
Still only me
Where bergs and peeks throne
Cold beneath the moon
At the works of my gods
I glaze my heart to be
The nature of dark
Awake my soul to see
At the works of my gods
I glaze my heart to be
With an evil mind
...flamed my heart will be
My quest reverse the time... within the dark mind
Strength in it I find... within the dark mind
The dark nights horizons and only me
The shunning moonlit lights
The paths to forests wild
Massive sky powerful sky
Still only me
Epic and diabolic... swallowing the gloom
At the works of my gods
I glaze my heart to be
The nature of dark
Awake my soul to see
At the works of my gods
I glaze my heart to be
With an evil mind
...flamed my heart will be
The dark minds landscaped and only me
Walls of time benight...
A world I realised
Massive thoughs powerful thoughts
Still only me
A deepening of a shadow
By the dimmening of the sun
Howdy Howdy all!
Okay I have chosen the topics for my papers in Renaissance Culture and Society and Europe: The Middle Ages...Okay now each paper must be between 15-20 pages and because of my concentration the Middle Ages paper must touch on women's studies....So for Renaissance culture and Society I will concentrate on Public Health in Renaissance Italy and for the Middle Ages the focus will be on Punishments for Crimes against women in Europe in the Middle Ages (like the penalty for defiling a virgin as opposed to a uhm more "seasoned" woman...I will be pouring over Medieval Law Codes for a while to say the least...I am terribley excited about both topics but the challenge will be finding primary sources in English for each....but hey I'm up for the challenge...Now enough of business...
I used to love this show called Big Blue Marble! Does anyone else remember it...Oh the fun I used to have watching that show. It promoted cultural sensitivity (for real, not the fake kind of Vegetable Soup) and would feature a child from another part of the world and talk about their culture. There was even a segment on offering pen pal opportunities to viewers...it was fantastic...
Even the theme song is all happy and sweet...Anyway, I am triple tired and so how about some poetry...here goes..
(may/december, may/december, may/december)
My Madonna
I haled me a woman from the street,
Shameless, but, oh, so fair!
I bade her sit in the model's seat
And I painted her sitting there.
I hid all trace of her heart unclean;
I painted a babe at her breast;
I painted her as she might have been
If the Worst had been the Best.
She laughed at my picture and went away.
Then came, with a knowing nod,
A connoisseur, and I heard him say;
"'Tis Mary, the Mother of God."
So I painted a halo round her hair,
And I sold her and took my fee,
And she hangs in the church of Saint Hillaire,
Where you and all may see. --Robert W. Service
