What is the ACORN controversy about?

Here are the basics about ACORN and about the videos that have put the organization in hot water.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) is once again at the center of controversy. This time the group is in hot water over videos that show employees telling two conservative activists masquerading as a pimp and prostitute how to trick federal tax authorities.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) is once again at the center of controversy. This time the group is in hot water over videos that show employees telling two conservative activists masquerading as a pimp and prostitute how to trick federal tax authorities.

ACORN says the videos are part of a “multiyear political assault” on the organization, which conservatives say uses tax dollars to advance a liberal agenda. But the organization also says it is “deeply disturbed” by the videos and has launched its own review of employee procedures and training.
[I’d be hollering political assault too if I had just gotten caught with my pants down the way they were…, “deeply disturbed” ??? only because they got caught Boo.]

Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers are using the videos as evidence for why the federal government should cut off all funding to the organization, which helps low- and moderate-income people gain access to mortgages.

On Monday, senators overwhelmingly voted to keep the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from issuing grants to ACORN. On Wednesday, Sen. Richard Shelby (R) of Alabama asked for a full-blown investigation of the group.

But how did an organization that largely concerns itself with matters of America’s poorest find itself, once again, in the sights of both lawmakers and talk-show hosts? Following are some basics about

ACORN and the recent controversy.

What is ACORN?

According to the group’s website, http://www.acorn.org/index.php?id=12342 ACORN is a collection of grass-roots organizations that serve as an advocate for the poor. It began in the 1970s and now has about 1,200 chapters. It is “committed to social and economic justice” and has worked to raise the minimum wage, end predatroy lending practices, and develop affordable housing.

But during the presidential campaign last year, a few ACORN employees working to register voters were charged with filing bogus applications. http://features.csmonitor.com/politics/2008/10/19/are-voter-fraud-fears-overblown/  They were caught and fired. But when it was revealed that President Obama had connections with ACORN, the incident became highly politicized. Republican presidential candidate John McCain attempted to tie ACORN with Mr. Obama.

ACORN does receive federal tax dollars for some of its work. The Senate vote on the motion presented Monday by Sen. Mike Johanns (R) of Nebraska would prevent it from receiving any dollars from HUD. The group was in line to receive grants to counsel low-income homebuyers.

Senator Johanns, who also wants the US attorney general to investigate  http://johanns.senate.gov/public/?p=PressReleases&ContentRecord_id=cd541a24-7739-4895-ad69-f3cfeeb7ba40  ACORN, says that the group has received $53 million in federal money since 1994.

In light of the most recent controversy, the Census Bureau has fired ACORN, which had been hired to help with the 2010 Census.

What do the videos show?

On Sept. 10, the website Biggovernment.com  http://biggovernment.com/category/exclusives/  began posting videos of a couple who said they were operating a prostitution ring that involved underage girls from El Salvador. They went to ACORN offices in New York, Washington, California, and Maryland with essentially the same story: They wanted help hiding their illicit income from federal tax authorities.

In all the videos, ACORN employees offered their help, knowing full well what the couple’s intentions were.
[Ain’t nothing wrong with selling just a tad of under aged nookie from some third world country…, now is there Boo? Well except for trying to “Trick” the FED’s outta their share anyway.]

Mike Flynn, editor of Biggovernment.com, said Wednesday that the site will be posting even more videos http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=33581  of ACORN.

Since the videos aired, ACORN has become the scorn of conservative talk-show hosts. Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly of Fox News http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,550022,00.html  have said the tapes prove not only that the group is “corrupt,” but also that corruption extends to the Obama administration.

“Who does the president surround himself with? ACORN and [the Service Employees International Union]. Well, gee, there’s corruption there. We can’t take anything,” Mr. Beck said.

One Republican insider told Politico: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27208_Page2.html  “This is an organization that has attracted attention before…. Basically, ACORN gets federal money, and it advocates for the liberal, Democrat agenda. That’s wrong, and we need to stop it.”

What is ACORN doing in light of the controversy?

On Wednesday, ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis said the tapes were “indefensible actions of a handful of employees” and warranted an independent review of the group’s procedures.
[INDEFENSIBLE…, WELL DUH…! That’s usually the case when you get your dumb ass caught, doing something illegal, immoral or unethical, on tape.]

She said this in a statement:

“We have all been deeply disturbed by what we’ve seen in some of these videos. I must say, on behalf of ACORN’s Board and our Advisory Council, that we will go to whatever lengths necessary to reestablish the public trust. For nearly forty years, ACORN has given voice to communities, and gotten results. Right now, our nearly 500,000 member are working their hearts out for quality, affordable healthcare for every American and to help stop the foreclosure crisis. We must get this process right, so the good work can go forward.”
[Deeply disturbed because you got your ass caught, and you’ll lie as long and as loud as you have to, to get people to forget about this latest scandal. Those 500K members you speak of are out trying to con gullible citizens into falling for yet government swindle. The Universal Health Care they are advocating is the same kind of FREE health care they have in KENYA, and Nairobi…, NONE…! Stop the foreclosure crisis? YOU mother-fuckers, with all of your law suites and demonstrations, are one of the biggest reasons that there is such a crisis, YOU forced the banking industry to start making Liar Loans to people they knew didn’t qualify for a loan. AND now you want to act like you’re on the other side of the fucking fence? As for the “good work” comment, your group does NO good work, it never has, and it never will Boo.]

Can ACORN survive this latest controversy?

John Fund, an op-ed writer for The Wall Street Journal, says that this time, ACORN “may be finally running off the rails.”
[If only we could be that lucky.]

He noted that last week, “11 of its workers were accused by Florida prosecutors of falsifying information on 888 voter registration forms.” He continued, “Last month, Acorn’s former Las Vegas, Nev., field director, Christopher Edwards, agreed to testify against the group in a case in which Las Vegas election officials say 48% of the voter registration forms the group turned in were ‘clearly fraudulent.’ Acorn itself is charged with 13 counts of illegally using a quota system to compensate workers in an effort to boost the number of registrations. (Acorn has denied wrongdoing in all of these cases.)”
[ACORN is exactly like the Democratic and Republican Political Parties…, It has been DEVOURED, from the inside out, WITH CORRUPTION.]
ACORN says it is besieged – again – because of a few bad apples within their offices.
[Besieged…, yes as well it should be, BUT because of a FEW “Bad Apples…?” Who the fuck do they think they’re bull shitting here? Every last one of their apples is ROTTEN TO ITS CORE Boo.]

Brian Kettenring, an ACORN spokesman, told the Associated Press that Republicans were “playing politics” and trying to “stop ACORN’s good work fighting to stop the foreclosure crisis and to win quality, affordable healthcare for all Americans.”
[That’s what politicians do dummy, they play politics. ACORN has played politics all of its corporate fricking life AND now they wanna cry because some one else is doing it to them…? Give my black ass a god damned break here Boo.]

SEND 'EM SOME MONEY

The conservative media has a hit list, and, as you know, ACORN is its most recent target. Right-wing talkers like Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity aren't going to give up on their own. That's why we have to fight them at every turn, exposing the profound hypocrisy and total lack of journalistic standards that define their so-called reporting. We need your support to keep up the fight.  [Request: Send them some money]

In a new study released yesterday, Media Matters for America methodically exposes how both Beck and Hannity have spent years obsessively attacking ACORN under the guise of exposing corruption at an organization that receives government funding. Consider the following staggering numbers:

On Beck's and Hannity's respective television programs combined, ACORN was mentioned 1,502 times between May 8, 2006, and September 18, 2009. More than 1,500 times. Remember that ACORN has not been charged with any wrongdoing. Not only that, but the organization has been awarded just $53 million in federal funding over the past 15 years -- an average of $3.5 million per year.

Compare that to the coverage Beck and Hannity gave to Jack Abramoff, former Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH), Blackwater, Halliburton, and Kellogg, Brown, and Root (KBR) -- stories of well-documented political scandals and of corruption by companies that have received thousands of times more money from the government than ACORN has in the past 15 years. Abramoff and Ney were involved in influence peddling corruption that reached the highest levels of the Bush administration and Republican-controlled Congress.

The aforementioned military contractors have all been involved in major controversies and scandals, some of which reportedly contributed to the deaths of U.S. troops, contractors, and Iraqi civilians alike.

Combined, these contractors have been awarded at least $25 billion in contracts since 2001.

So how many times were these names mentioned on Beck's and Hannity's programs?

Abramoff and Ney: 62 times
Blackwater/Xe: four times
Halliburton/KBR: 43 times

In other words, Beck's and Hannity's programs combined were approximately 35 times more likely to discuss ACORN than any of the military contractors. They were also 24 times more likely to discuss ACORN than Abramoff and Ney.

Beck and Hannity have been willing to run with any story that accuses ACORN of corruption, even if the accusations remain unproven and the details were gathered using ethically and legally questionable tactics.

But as we show in our study, these two hosts didn't lift a finger to report on the massive cases of corruption involving prominent military contractors and Republicans in Congress. This is agenda-driven journalism of the most transparent sort, and we need to continue to fight back by exposing their hypocrisy with hard facts. We need your support to keep up the fight: [Send 'em some money at mediamatters dot org ya know?]

  MY COMMENT:

Of course this is not new : "...the old enemies of peace - business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering" have always done things this way and always will if and when allowed to do it and then allowed to go unpunished for doing their great evil like the fudkers  Beck and Hannity. Apologist and smoke-screen-liars for eight years for the illegitimate Cheney-Bush cabal and regimes..

I know 'em. Got 'em in my family. Fascist Unpatriotic Despotic Kleptocrat Egregious Retrograde Sons-of-Bitches [FUDKERS] of the neoconservative right-wing, racist Republican Party wrap themselves in the flag of AUSPONA [ain't no such thing as a North or South  American, European, Asian, African, Artic flag. Least I never seen one or heard of one] and label treasonist the liberals or progressives among us.

acorn what?
Anyone here ever heard of Acorn Systems? I have, but never really understood their function. If you read the synposis they have on their site about what they do, you will see something like this:

Acorn Systems enables meaningful and sustained profit improvement by providing continuous enterprise-wide visibility into business performance. How? Acorn combines a unique and proven consulting methodology with a highly scalable, sustainable software platform to provide a superior profit improvement solution.
Know what they do yet? Me neither. So I did some research to see if I could find a plain english "Acorn Systems for Dummies" type of explanation of the company and what it does.

Apparently the company distributes costing software that will help you see the distribution of money within an organization, be it a mid sized company or a corporate conglomerate. You can see charts of net profit by store, category, and vendor. They also help you to maximize your profits by showing you discrepancies in your organization. It's pretty nifty software and it covers a variety of other aspects of business management.
