Attending class

Lovely to see misterskank's comment for this Inside Higher Education article.

I take attendance every day, as a TA teaching English 101 at the University of Arizona. Students that miss quizzes, etc. make getting an A very difficult. I only announce in a given class when we'll have a  quiz. I also typically only announce important details for major assignments in class. The students that don't attend class and don't follow these simple directions sacrifice their grades.

Let me just say this: call me "lax," but the University of Arizona accepts 80% of all the students that apply. This is why a bunch of semi-bright Southern California kids drive the five to seven hours to go to college here -- the California system didn't accept them.

My college experience

After attending a small college where I got lots of personal attention from PhDs, and was very involved in extracurricular activities, it's beyond me why a bright kid who'll probably get a humanities or "soft" science degree would want to come to to a massive, impersonal state university, and live in an apartment with other checked-out students.

Working while you're a student, unless it's in the academic setting, is a net loss for a student. I should know. I wasn't reading that Great Literature while working at GNC. But our economy basically demands it.

Grading Philosophy

The kids in my class that have excellent attendance and participate get an A. The kids that are especially bright but skimp on attendance also usually get an A. Everyone else gets a B, except for the kids that are both dull and do not attend many classes. They typically get a C, or limp to a D (and I doubt these will ever get a Bachelor's degree). The kids that attend but obviously went to high schools for the lower-class kids make me feel sorry for them -- they're beat down.

I had a bright kid tell me he would miss class because he was going to Mexico for a quick vacation. I told I wished I could do the same, but noted my relative poorness/impecunity. Didn't bother me.

I had a student have a personal breakdown. I just told her to do the work -- no need to sweat.

Reading

Read a good book. Listen to good music. Read Krugman, not...what's her name? ... Maureen Dowd (i.e. read the newspaper). Eat good food. Watch only good TV.

Get in the habit of being able to entertain yourself. Bored people are boring people.

All I can do for students is model the above behavior, make them think, "That's someone I'd like be like -- animated, entertaining, intelligent."

That's all one can do in terms of shaping the personality of someone else.

Human and Humanities
Here, we find mention of Thomas Mallon's questions to the humanities departments. He is former deputy of the National Endowment for the Arts and author of some novels.

I like this question of his:
1. How can American professors learn to write about literature in language that isn’t a crude, pseudo-technical insult to the text it’s supposedly explicating?
Interesting: the structure and tone of Mallon's question shows us nearly exactly how not to answer his question -- to do the complete opposite of what he asks. He assumes that nothing of worth comes out of literary criticism these days (ever?), a "crude...insult," "pseudo-technical," and inferior to the text "it's supposedly explicating."

There's a lot to unpack here. If we take on Mallon's position, we have to answer how to completely overhaul an entire discipline with a strong and long (and alliterative) tradition that's been lost. Well, like having them students read Plato's "Republic," perhaps writers of literary criticism should read Matthew Arnold and Sam Coleridge essays, instead of Judy Butler's latest. That would be a start.

It is, in fact, Mallon's question that is crude. Literary criticism from English professors covers so many topics: poetics, history, philosophy, critical theory, cultural inquiry or "studies," sociology, psychology and the list goes on (architecture and "quadrilateralism"?). What literary criticism does well is to focus on specific language and its implications, something few other scholarly disciplines have taken the time to do. So: words have meaning which need explicating. Or: word, you got some 'splainin' to do. In sum, literary criticism's interests are as wide and varied as the creative, or "creative," texts which it explores/investigates/tortures/analyzes.

Different academic journals of literary criticism have entirely different editorial specifics and styles. To couch them all together as worthless seems unhinged, uninformed, and hyperbolic. The assumption of a "pseudo-" (to use Mallon's term) monolithic Shitty Literary Criticism -- one's own shit don't smell! -- is the original mistake.

There are good articles; there are bad ones. I read ctheory.net; the prose is light, the content futuristic. I receive PMLA and reel back in horror at the superficial mix of "technical" language, cringe-inducing articles on new "global" texts (diversity-hires-as-articles, if you will), and writing seemingly unbound in its appetite for self-congratulation. Then I read an introductory sentence to a paragraph duller than a composition student's, or at least a three on a scale of ten for a graduate student in English:
Bagese shows the failure of the boundaries that have been imagined and mandated to separate human beings from all else; she reminds the reader of the fluidity of identity. (John Blair Gamber, "'Outcasts and Dreamers in the Cities': Urbanity and Pollution in Dead Voices", PMLA 122.1)
Agreed, there's a lot wrong with LitCrit -- too many people writing articles just for the sake of writing articles. Guess what, that's how the discipline's economics have developed. At every level of society, little behaviors, etiquette, and style help people differentiate the good from the bad, so the collective can get better. There ain't no good with no bad.

If anything, comparing the entire set of literary criticism, all the good and the bad, to the entire set of fiction writing, Mallon's forte, shows us that literary criticism isn't doing so bad. Read Liz Fielding's The Best Man & The Bridesmaid (Harlequin, 2001) lately?

Mallon writes in his 2001 Afterword to his Stolen Words (originally published by Harvest 1989):
For students, especially, the Internet may sap the very need to create. It's all there already, or so it seems; all the knowledge on a given subject, and all the competing viewpoints...
This quote, Mallon's own words, seems an appropriate response to his question to humanists:
How can American professors learn to write about literature in language that isn’t a crude, pseudo-technical insult to the text it’s supposedly explicating?
Bear down and do good work -- that's the best answer I can give. Write like H Saussy and E Hayot. And quit being paranoid, profs: nobody really read LitCrit in the first place.

I got into college.
So, I'm going to college. Smiley

I'm not as excited as I should be, because well, it's Regis. I only want to go to BC. For if I get into Boston College, I get to go for free. And needless to say, getting into an extremely good college for free is certainly my first choice. But yeah... it was nice to finally recieve an acceptance. Well, it was nice to finally recieve something. I haven't recieved any refusals or acceptances, so just hearing from a college was good enough.
So I got into Regis with a $12,000 a year presidential scholarship. So that's pretty good: saving $48,000 overall (pretty much half off tuition). But of course.... getting into a superior school and being able to go for free is better. So I'm still waiting on that...

It's nice to know that I'm going to college though.

LIST
Regis College
Boston College
Providence College
Salve Regina University
Assumption College
UMass Amherst

UMass Amherst is only on there as a safety school, and since I got into Regis.... it was pointless to apply there after all. I got the Regis Book Award last year, so I was pretty sure I would get in. So Rock the Fuck On.
I dont really want to go to Providence, but it's a good school, so I wouldn't be opposed to attending if I got in. And Salve Regina is beautiful, so I would love to go there as well. Assumption is more of a 'everyone is going there' school, so I applied for shits and giggles. And of course, Boston College is my choice school.

I dont see why I wouldn't get in, I'm a mutherfuckin' academic tank:
4th in my class of  >70 students
GPA of 4.22
A 1940 on the SATs
Both my parents went there, and they even were married on campus.
I attended Anatomy and Physiology I & II @ BC last Summer.
The teachers who wrote my recommendations went there, and so did the majority of teachers at my school.
My father works there.
I'm in NHS (National Honor Society) and was in Student Government.
I've taken every single AP class that my school offers.
They loved my essay so much that they called me in for an interview which went equally well.

Yeah... I keep listing those credentials over in my head thinking, "I have to get in." But uh... I still dont get my hopes up.

On a completely different note: One of the nicest lunch ladies died today. I have a small school, so everyone knows everyone well. And it was depressing to find out that she died, it's like a distant family member is gone. She was so sweet cuz she always remembered everything about the kids and like knows my favorite food and always put more food on my plate. She was just the sweetest lady ever, and it was surprising to find out that she died so suddenly. But death is inevitable.
R.I.P. Patty. Smiley

Careers Of Two Football Players Come To Sudden Close

Two Georgia Tech football players have been ruled academically ineligible for January 1st's Gator Bowl.

Quarterback Reggie Ball and cornerback Kenny Scott are both seniors and will now end their college careers with a whimper, no matter how good they may have been.  Ball, a senior, passed for 1,820 yards this season while starting every game. He threw for 20 touchdowns and was intercepted 14 times, but was criticized for inconsistency, especially after Tech's offense sputtered in a regular season-ending loss to Georgia and a loss to Wake Forest in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.  Scott was a three-year starter. This season he had 50 tackles, two interceptions and 10 pass breakups.

Coach Chan Gailey said. "Although this is a very, very bad ending to the careers of these two young men, we can't forget the contributions they have made to the Georgia Tech program the last four years."

They may have made contributions, but with an ending like this, who is going to remember them?

(no subject)
Do you remember February 1993 when a young 3 yr. old was taken from a Shopping mall in Liverpool, NY by two 10-year-old boys? Jamie Bulger walked away from his mother for only a second and Jon Venables took his hand and led him out of the mall with his friend Robert Thompson. They took Jamie on a walk for over 2 and a half miles, along the way stopping every now and again to torture the poor little boy who was crying constantly for his mommy. Finally they stopped at a railway track where they brutally kicked him, threw stones at him, rubbed paint in his eyes and pushed batteries up his anus. It was actually worse than this... What these two boys did was so horrendous that Jamie's mother was FORBIDDEN to identify his body. They then left his beaten small body on the tracks so a train could run him over to hide the mess they had created. These two boys, even being boys, understood what they did was wrong, hence trying to make it look like an accident. This week Lady Justice Butler-Sloss has awarded the two boys anonymity for the rest of their lives when they leave custody with new identities. We cannot let this happen. They will also leave early this year only serving just over half of their sentence. One paper even stated that Robert may go on to a University. They are getting away with their crime. They disgustingly and violently took Jamie's life away. - in return they get a new life. Please read it carefully... then add your name at the end... and send it to everyone you can! Please add your name and location to the list and send it to friends and family. Please copy this e-mail (highlight text, right click, copy and paste into a new email) instead of forwarding so we do not get arrows at the beginning of the sentences. If you are the 700th person to sign, please forward email to cust.ser.cs@gtnet.gov.uk and attention it to Lady Justice Butler-Sloss. Then start the list over again and send to your friends and family. The Love-Bug virus took less than 72 hours to reach the world. I hope this one does as well. We need to protect our family and friends from creatures like Robert and Jon. One day they may be living next to you and your small children, without your knowledge. If Robert and Jon could be so evil at 10 years old, imagine what they could do as adults! 1. Casey Spencer, New Kent, VA 2. Elisabeth Jones, Louisa,VA 3. Jody Rothhaar- Holly Grove, VA 4.
