On Tuesday, Eric Morris of Florida died after consuming more than two dozen cherry vodka shots within a half hour. Witnesses provided evidence that he had taken 23 to 25 "cherry bomb" shots in a 30 minute duration. A Cherry Bomb is made by combining cherry vodka with the Red Bull energy drink. The 26-year-old male was said to be participating in a drinking game with another patron at Angel's Show Bar in Seffner Florida hours before he died. While his drinking buddy stopped after just a few shots, for some reason the bartender kept serving Morris and "decided at shot glass 24 or 25 that she wasn't going to serve him anymore." Just moments after being declined more alcohol, Morris "staggered away from the bar where he had been drinking and collapsed."
Unable to resuscitate him, patrons at the bar called 911. Morris was transported to a local hospital and then died about two hours after the party had begun. The odd thing about this is that he used to work in a bar himself, as a bouncer. Seeing people test their limits with alcohol, one would think he would have learned not to outdo himself, however his sister thinks he kept taking the shots to try to prove his endurance, which was valued in their family.
There is currently no legal limit as to how much liquor a bar can serve a patron. Do you think a law like this should be enforced? Many bartenders know when it is time to "cut someone off," however when it comes down to making money, is this really a consideration while serving someone who is severely impaired in making decisions? It seems a large misjudgment caused this man his life, and also a reminder to others when enough is too much.
Today's news is brought to you by Smurfy and the word "irony." In Lancaster, PA, a truck full of fire extinguishers and safety equipment caught on fire last week. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find that the '91 Ford f-350 Super Duty truck was experiencing an engine fire. The truck was parked at a house near Hershey Village Apartments, close to civilization. It resulted in the burning of some branches, as well as minor damage to a nearby parked car.
The truck belonged to the Lancaster Safety Technologies company. The company's specialization is "fire extinguisher inspections, recharges and sales." Though none of the safety equipment was damaged, the company lost their truck and had about $25,000 in total damages.
The fire was determined as accidental.
It looks like the wonderful world of advertising has taken another blow. This time, it is the condiments company Heinz that aired a "gay-themed" commercial in the UK, which apparently drew in over 200 consumer complaints.
In advertising for Heinz Deli Mayo, the 30 second commercial depicts a family scene, with two children referring to a stereotypical New York Deli man as "Mum," before "Dad" walks out and gives him a kiss as he is leaving for work.
Regarding the decision to pull the ad, Nigel Dickie of Heinz UK, said: 'It is our policy to listen to consumers. We recognize that some consumers raised concerns over the content of the ad and this prompted our decision to withdraw it. The advertisement, part of a short-run campaign, was intended to be humorous and we apologize to anyone who felt offended."
The viewers complained that the material was "offensive," "inappropriate," and "unsuitable to be seen by children," while other viewers were perturbed that they had to explain homosexual relationships to their children who didn't understand the ad.
Perhaps at a glance, the ad simply depicts two gay men sharing a kiss, however when seeing the humor in it, it just seems to say that Heinz Deli Mayo is so good, mom would approve -- and be transformed into a Deli man just by using it.
Did you enjoy this ad, or do you believe that Heinz UK was right in removing it early? Would you be offended if your children saw this?
As many bloggers have posted and mourned, we've lost a comedic genius on Sunday. George Carlin, best known for "Seven Words You Can Never Use on Television," died in Los Angeles, at the age of 71. According to his publicist, the cause of death was heart failure.
Carlin became a stand-up comic in the late 50's, and debuted his first solo guest appearance on "The Merv Griffin Show" in 1965. By the 70's, he was a well-known comedian, and had made more than 80 major television appearances, while regularly being featured in nightclubs in New York and Las Vegas, however he felt his clean-cut image was a lie. It was at this time Carlin reinvented himself to become the comedian we all grew to love; a man who wasn't afraid of words or honesty.
The Associated Press released the above news clip summing up details of his life and death. Carlin will be greatly missed, though his humor and inspiration will live on.

"Google bombing" is a relatively new term, used to describe a technique bloggers use in order to get other bloggers like themselves to post links to specific web pages or articles that increase their page rank in the Google system. This is done so that when certain keywords are searched, the results will likely show up within the first 50 results. This strategy is used by bloggers when they have an opinion and they want it heard fast. The more links they can get people to post, the closer that article will be to the top of the search results.
With that being said, right before election season, bloggers are working hard to get information about candidates known to the public, whether this strategy is considered "fair" or not. Chris Bowers, the managing editor of political blog OpenLeft has been launching Google bombs with the help of his readers by encouraging bloggers to post links to nine news stories about John McCain that could possibly hurt his chances of becoming the next president.
The articles being linked refer to McCain "voting to filibuster a minimum wage hike" and "the Senate passing an expanded GI bill despite opposition from McCain." Within five days, the first story had risen eight slots, making it the 42nd result while the second story had risen 16 slots, making it the 35th result for search term "John McCain."
Bowers is not campaigning for Obama, however he is obviously campaigning against McCain. He plans to have at least three of the nine articles appear within the top 10 search results for "John McCain" by Labor Day.
Strategies such as this one have been used during campaigning in the past. Is this a fair and free way to advertise or should Google do something to keep this under control? After learning about this strategy to make ideas more known, do you trust your results as facts or opinions?

What would happen if absolutely no one voted in an election, not even the candidates? A small town in North Dakota is about to find out. Though this seems highly unlikely, when learning exactly how many people lived in this tiny town, the picture becomes much clearer. Mayor Darrel Brudevold claimed that there was usually a high turnout of voters, "a half-dozen people usually make it to the polls." That's slightly more than half of the 11 people who populate Pillsbury, North Dakota.
The former mayor was running unopposed and therefore felt he had nothing to lose, however when one candidate gets absolutely no votes, they are not considered elected. The small farming community was too busy tending their crops to bother to make it out to the polls. Even Brudevold's wife couldn't make it!
The county auditor ruled that those in office may either stay in office or appoint others to the jobs until the next upcoming election. Looks like his position is safe!
Tattooedjen reports of a strange and personal new health requirement in Japan. In a country we would hardly deem at risk for obesity due to their healthy diets, the government is working on a required method that will reduce obesity, or "metabo" by 25% in 7 years. Citizens of Japan are being called upon to have their waistlines measured. The new prescribed limit for a male's waistline is 33.5 inches. For women, it is 35.4. The targeted group for measuring are those of ages 40 to 74, which is a little less than half of their population. If after 3 months they are unable to lose the inches, they will be given dietary guidance. For those who cannot lose the inches in 6 months, they will be given "further re-education."
In America, the average waistline for men is 39 inches, and for women it is 36.5. How would you feel if such a law were enforced in your country? Is the government overstepping its boundaries? Do you think this will have a positive or negative effect on body image in the Asian country?
