The Golden Compass- Will you watch it?

Postby mystupidmouth on Fri Nov 16, 2007 11:20 pm

The Golden Compass is a novel by Phillip Pullman, an atheist, that has recently been made into a film. It's release has been highly controversial and the Catholic church has taken a stand against it.

So, what is your opinion on The Golden Compass and the His Dark Materials series? Have you read the books? Will you see the movie? Why or why not?

I've read the books about 12 times, they were my fav's as a kid.
I'll see the movie because i read the books, but even if i hadn't, if the catholics are against it, i HAVE to see it.

I've read the books and I'll see the movie.

I've read several of Pullman's books to my daughter: The Scarecrow and His Servant and The Firework Maker's Daughter, just for example.

I've never noticed any propaganda for atheism in his books, and was surprised to hear that he is one.

The Golden Compass and the other books don't seem anti-Catholic to me. Even if they were, what of it? Let the Catholics watch it with a blanket over their heads if they like. And if they want to publicize the film by protesting, well, long may they wave.

I've said elsewhere that I think they've gone out of their way to try to be offended.

In any case...

I grew up Catholic, went to Catholic elementary and high school, so I have horror stories of my own to tell, and since I live near the cathedral in Boston I see the protesters there every Sunday -- the men and women who were abused by priests as children.

The Catholic Church has worked very hard to deserve all the criticism they receive.

I personally think that if the Catholic church is so worried that this movie will draw kids to atheism, then their foundation of beliefs is not very strong.

I also did not notice the atheistic undertones when I read the book.

The entire book was atheistic.

I think every group tries hard to be offended these days. If gays, Christians, minorities, etc. were as thick skinned and apathetic as us good ol' boys, no one would ever be offended by anything.

In what way?

Didn't they go to hell at some point? a la' Dante? But there wasn't any suggestion that that was the only possible afterlife, was there?

It may very well be. I'm just saying that when I read the book as a 15 (ish) year old a few years ago, I didn't pick up on the atheistic elements. Maybe they are there- I'll have to reread the book now and look for them. I simply don't think most children would decipher the underlying themes of atheism while reading the book or watching the movie.

Actually, that was the point of their going there...
