I've read the books and I'll see the movie.
I've read several of Pullman's books to my daughter: The Scarecrow and His Servant and The Firework Maker's Daughter, just for example.
I've never noticed any propaganda for atheism in his books, and was surprised to hear that he is one.
The Golden Compass and the other books don't seem anti-Catholic to me. Even if they were, what of it? Let the Catholics watch it with a blanket over their heads if they like. And if they want to publicize the film by protesting, well, long may they wave.
I've said elsewhere that I think they've gone out of their way to try to be offended.
In any case...
I grew up Catholic, went to Catholic elementary and high school, so I have horror stories of my own to tell, and since I live near the cathedral in Boston I see the protesters there every Sunday -- the men and women who were abused by priests as children.
The Catholic Church has worked very hard to deserve all the criticism they receive.
