i don't think punk's dead, but that's probably because i actually listen to real punk music. (no offense intended here at all, promise)

fall out boy was never punk. they've played pop punk music throughout their whole career. actually, i'm being generous when i call it pop punk even, more like pop/rock. i'm not saying that's a bad thing...they just don't play punk music.

anyone who listens to punk knows that avril lavigne and any other band glammed up in black hair dye and anarchy t-shirts on mtv are just cashing in on the trend. punk is so much more than that.

i'm not saying being big is bad: look at the fucking clash. biggest punk band ever around? yes. arena shows? yes. good music? again, yes.

however, punk music has to start as more of a mentality than anything else. enough with the sap though.

my favorite punk bands at the moment:

black flag, defiance, ohio (more-so folk punk, download all their stuff for free on their website), crass (ironically have a song called "punk is dead"), government warning (ok more hardcore than punk but put the two together and cha-ching), and of course the descendents.

i don't know what it is, but i just can not get into Black Flag, Defiance, Ohio, the Descendents or Crass. i love punk, but i hate all of those bands. but i love Bad Brains, so i guess that makes up for it, right?

also, since you listen to Defiance, Ohio have you checked out Ghost Mice yet? and if so, you better already listen to the Mountain Goats.

I'd like to elaborate.

When I say "Yes, Punk is dead, yes yes yes", I'm not so much referring to the genre of music as much as I am the 'movement' that surrounded it. Maybe 'movement' is a bad word, but it's all I can think of right now. In that sense, punk music has been dead since, what, the late seventies, early eighties? I may be getting my music trend history mixed up here, but didn't glam-rock/hair metal/all other music produced in the 80's kind of stomp out whatever influence punk music had on popular culture?

Anyway, just because someone is still playing a certain kind of music doesn't mean that music is still important. There's plenty of groups who try to revive a certain type of music (Amy Winehouse and The Pipettes are all that come to mind at the moment). Sometimes it works, but from what I recall, most times it doesn't. Remember that big Garage Rock Revival of a few years ago? When The Strokes were going to be the most important band of the decade? That didn't really pan out.

it took me the longest time to get into black flag but one day they just clicked with me. i can't really get into bad brains besides their self titled album, but ive heard that's the only good one anyway so eh. and yeah i already listen to ghost mice. plan-it-x ftw, haha. also, of course i love the mountain goats. who doesnt?

punk's not dead, it just smells like it.

But yes, as someone who once considered their self as a punk, I will say punk is dead.

The meaning got lost so long ago, that no one is really even sure what it is anymore. Of course there will always be "punk" bands and those who dress like "punks" but even bands in the 70's knew punk was dead...

Just read the lyrics to the song "Punk Is Dead" by the band Crass...its on their album The Feeding of the 5000 which came out in the early 70's.

wishyouwerehere wrote:"Punk's not dead til big corporations can exploit and mass produce it"

By that statement, punk is dead. In fact, even considering the "You can't mass produce attitude" argument, punk is STILL dead. And I only need to cite ONE example to prove my point: The Sex Pistols.

The Sex Pistols were put together by one Malcolm McLaren, some record company guy who was looking to exploit the "punk" trend, so by this time, corporations were already exploiting punk rock. After a while, they kicked out their bassist who wrote all the songs and then hired incompetent moron Sid Vicious, who could hardly play his fucking instrument, as a replacement. Just because he was "more punk".

After the Sex Pistols ended, THOUSANDS of bands formed, with the exact same head-up-the-ass "anarchy" attitude as the Pistols. So to answer your question, yes, you CAN mass produce attitude, and yes, punk is dead. In fact, considering the fact that many consider the Sex Pistols to have started the punk movement, by that logic you could even say that punk was stillborn.

fuck the sex pistols.
i love punk, or whatever crack addicted baby it is now.

i dont love it just because of the music, I love it because of the family.

Fall out Boy's shit before under the cork tree was punk and you know it.
Snagged is a newer band, playing the underground circuit.
Split Fifty is relatively new?
I dunno, punks not dead in my eyes.
It's just reincarnated into shit.
Like literally.

fall out boy is not punk and everyone knows that.
