Sounds like your teacher assigned "Running with Scissors" by Augusten Burroughs. That's the book I assigned this term, too. I loved it, but it does have all the stuff you mention. I don't know if students would like Jane Austen, though. Have you read "Painted Bird" by Jerzy Kosinski? Now there's a book that will grow you up in a hurry!
Actually, it was She's Come Undone by wally lamb. I'm just glad it didn't have pictures.
Writing is interactive in a way that pictures are not. A good book is a book that makes you think. Did "Undone" make you think?
