Here's a place to think about thinking. I'm thinking that this will be a useful tool for processing my thoughts about the new elearning class. I also want to test this in the traits course. The lack of a journal in D2L is pushing me in this direction.  The bonus may be the introduction of  blogs as a writer's tool that teachers will accept if they have some experience with the technology.

How can I use this tool to see into my students experiences?
Have them set up a Mindsay Blog & invite me to the space?
Use the space to monitor their work on a week to week basis?
Just suggest that each sets up their own space as a reference tool during the course?

Issues: privacy vs publicity?
Tech overload? Mastering D2L, course navigation, discussion software etc.

Re: Reflecting on reflecting
I think this is a great place for your students to reflect, ruminate, cross-pollinate (just kidding there). You definitely are a wired professor. Keep up the good work. And now to see a blog of your own?

Blessings, Susan in California, wanted to be a professor at one time, but had to quit grad school

Hey susan, it's never to late to get your degree. I went back to school at 50 for my first masters. ~ Dennis@Tahoe

Re: Reflecting on reflecting
Maybe you could give them a writing topic at the end of each period and have them post on mindsay so you can respond to each person individually, find out what they're like and what their styles are in an environment that encourages people to be themselves. It's much easier to post something that really comes from you when you don't have to look the instructor in the eye when you turn it in. It just gets creepy because the best stuff you'll write is personal stuff. Oh, I'm assuming this is some sort of writing course, oops. Well the reference tool is pretty cool, but you could always get a blackboard acount and have them log in to that. It's a very useful tool for updating students and such.

Re: Reflecting on reflecting
Free writing in a non judgemental environment does help fluency. I teach an online class for teacher to help them understand the writing process and 6-traits analysis. I think blogging will be a healthy activity for all.

It is hard to establish trust in a classroom. Without trust, it's hard to dig down and find the words in your heart. Real writing is risky, doing that in a school setting takes guts among other things. While my students can't look me in the eye, I feel like I can truly hear who they are as we think & write our way through nine weeks of reading and discussing writing.

It's impressive to see a professor take such an interest in his or her students' personal as well as academic growth. I'm sure whatever you come up with they will enjoy.

You can chose who reads ure blog, so i dnt think the prvacy thing would matter. If they only wanted you to read it then they can. If they want to world too see it then so be it.

Re: Reflecting on reflecting
You're right, privacy is built into this system, just check who you want to see your writing. The key for me will be easing my students fears about privacy. Most will be taking their first online class and setting up their first Blog. The public / private aspect is likely to frighten some of them. ~ Dennis
