Yes ... music is a huge part of who I am.  I'm sure I'm not alone in this.  It's not just a favorite activity or a time filler, it's ... an integral part of me, an expression of who I am.  There are times when what I listen to turns me, and there are times I turn the music.  There are times I write my own spontaneously, and there are times I'm content with what others have written. I can define music by my life, but my life also defines my music.

When I was a small girl, music filled our home.  My mom and dad were both musicians.  They each sang and mom played the piano while dad fiddled around!  ;)  I, too, play any number of instruments, though none exceptionally well.  I amuse myself!  lol

Like many people, my life and its seasons are defined by music.  I hear "Twist & Shout" (Beatles - 1964), and I'm in the back seat of our '56 chevy with my brother (he's 7 and I'm 10) singing loudly & laughing on our way to Florida.  I hear "Mrs. Brown, You've got a Lovely Daughter" (Herman's Hermits - 1965), and I'm in my room using a plastic ice cream cone as a mic - singing at the top of my lungs!  Smiley  I hear "Ohio" (Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young - 1970) and I feel the pangs of the Kent State shootings, particularly Allison Krause, an acquaintance of mine, and the turmoil of that era.

"I Honestly Love You" (Olivia-Newton John - '74) became a favorite in college as romance bloomed and promptly withered!  lol  "Am I Blue" (Bette Midler - '72) followed!

Nowadays, my musical soundtrack is more eclectic!  I still thrill to the acoustic genius of "Layla" and "Old Love" (Clapton), but I also enjoy smiley songs like "Bubble Toes" (Jack Johnson - 2002) and "Lazy River" (Michael BublĂ© - 2001).  Van Morrison is another favorite as he croons "Tupelo Honey" or swings with "Moondance".  Then there's the inspirational genre with musical ministers like David Ruis' "Anything for This Love",  or  Warren Barfield croaking "Soak it Up",  or Sara Groves' "Just Showed Up For My Own Life", or Ayiesha Wood's "HAPPY"!

All these songs, and many, many hundreds more are a part of  who I am, where I have been and where I'm going.  I'm sure I've left out huge chunks, but ... as a spontaneous gesture, it's pretty representative!  Smiley Smiley

Re: The Soundtrack of My Life
wow! I'm just a couple of years behind you but your reminisces bring smiles to me as well!  Listening to Help! while playing with matchbox cars as a 6 year old, my first introduction (most by my soon to be a dj sister) to the music and comedy of the late 60's and into my teen years - Steve Miller's Space Cowboy, Seals and Crofts and thier B'Hai faith, the FISH song off the Woodstock album bringing the VietNam war into the house in a way other than her arguments with my military dad, LOL!  My first concert with she and her friends, CSN&Y, My other sister dated and married a guy with an impressive reel to reel machine that, with headphones, introduced me to the Doors and John Sebastian.  High school was the not-quite-romance times with the background of the sexy tunes of Captain and Tenille (Do That To Me One More Time) and Oliva, and Sheena Easton, yes, lets not forget Sheena, LOL!

My manly man rock of Bob Seger, party tunes of the new guy, Jimmy Buffet, and for introspection, the original metrosexual, Jackson Browne.

With college came rock and introduction by roommates into more club rock, I guess it would be called - B-52s, OingoBoingo, Duran-Duran.  But I mostly stuck to U-2 and REM who were unknowns at the time.  A few years later with crazy fellow summer cops, it was punk and the Dead Milkmen, the Dead Kennedys.

Then came the Miami Vice years, Dire Straits, Glen Frey, Phil Collins, Mike and Mechanics.  I was a PI and most of my surveillance video had those tunes playing in the background (my van's radio) much to the professional dismay of my boss who knew those tapes had to be played in a courtroom, LOL!

Heartbreak in my late 20's got me neck deep into Clapton (how cool that you singled out "Old Love" ), Robert Cray (New Blood , Lyle Lovette ( ' before you go, could I make one little change?  I'd like to make that, .................  a ............................. cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessse burger") and the little known Brenden Croker with the Notting Hillbillies - sorry, gotta share this one with you!

ah, you got me started!  music is one reason I always loved to drive, the ultimate soundtrack to life.  'scuse me while I go put on some Merle "Think I'll just sit here and drink", LOL!

Re: The Soundtrack of My Life
This whole album was written by Croker who plays guitar though the group is fronted by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits doing a turn with some fellow musicians calling themselves the Notting Hillbillies.  The album is called "Missing : Presumed Having A Good Time" and the whole thing is awesome.  (that's Knopfler singing lead - I'm sure you reconize his unique guitar styling from Dire Straits)

Brendan has several albums of his own which I bought after hearing this one but this was one of 2 dozen tunes I had to put on my house mix tape that I made before leaving town heartbroken many years ago on a long road trip.

(It came out about the same time Tom Petty created the Traveling Wilburys with Jeff Lynn (ELO) George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan)

Your post inspired me to not only look through my album collection (which I haven't seen in, uh, 20 years, LOL!) but to finally sit down and write up a liner for that homemade tape.  I had a blast listening again to the 20 songs I put down in perfect order - and cutting and pasting lyrics to them all.  Maybe one day I'll post it as a blog entry - if it doesn't leave you crying from either listening to the songs or reading the lyrics, you are one cold hearted son of a gun!

Amazingly I went to the pub tonite and what played on the juke box? A Doors tune that I haven't heard since my former brother-in-law packed up his reel to reel 35 years ago!  Your post itself became a theme for my day!b.

and it's great that songs remind you of people not just a time period
we hear something and instantly think of someone associated with that memory

old friends
current ones
loves
children

Re: The Soundtrack of My Life
Oh yes!  Music intertwines with all the various relationships and events we share.  Like I said to Bruce ... one of these days, I'll have to do the long version!  This is just a "teaser"!  lol
