"Walkin' in Faith is depending on God to help you in your ways. God does not help those who do not help themselves although He does gives blessings.
"Doing our own thing and asking others to pay for it" is selfishness and nothing more.

I'm curious to know what inspired this question. My friends have been in ministry for years ... Thanks for your input.
*** yeah! Ravens are done! lol
To me, walking in faith means going ahead toward a goal you believe is right, putting forth effort to reach the goal, or putting forth effort to rectify a situation, etc. and asking God to give you proof one way or another about the rightness of that goal or the rightness of your efforts in whatever situation it is. I agree, walking in faith should involve some effort, and prayer too. Doing your own thing, to me, means just following your own desires with no regard to anything or anyone else.
So, you're saying then it is something that should be confirmed by 2 or 3, like it says in the NT .. .? Generally, I agree. But in the example, I have added ... ?
It seems very similar to the question I asked last week about the line between grace and abuse. It seems to be a very fine line.
There is no way to tell, for sure, from an objective standpoint.
Anyone can come from anywhere claiming a leading, a vision or a dream. For the pastor, he would be wise to make sure the ministries he supports and promotes match his vision for his church. That would settle the issue of financial support. And, I think for most churches, that would be leading others to Jesus or planting churches.

I haven't heard back from my friends about this strange, but interesting question. I am curious to know what raised it. The example I offered is what I thought of ... and it comes down to discernment, in my understanding ... and agreement. It does kinda make you wonder though ... how much of what we do in Jesus' name is really in His name. Thanks for your input.

I understand what you mean about discernment, but that also is very subjective and can be a bit tricky. It's so much better to have a policy/vision in our lives, that gives us parameters for what we will support and what we won't. It doesn't mean that what something someone else is doing is wrong--it's just not what we do. We can't support everything. It's good to have an idea about what you will support, that enables you to sift through all the requests.
Yes that's true. Guidelines are important. There are just exceptions, though, you know? If I presented a request to start a coffee house for casual adult fellowship and someone else had a "vision" for a food ministry ... both are reasonable and Godly requests. How do we discern which, if either, of these to support?
